Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).

After the commercial success of TED NUGENT, the wildman guitarist decided to stick to his same brand of energized hard rock. Consistency paid of as FREE FOR ALL became his first platinum record. But all was not well in the Nugent camp. During the sessions, vocalist Derek St. Holmes left the band due to "creative differences." Although St. Holmes would rejoin the band after the album's release, future superstar Meat Loaf was brought in to sing.

The lasciviously suggestive "Free for All" earned some decent FM airplay thanks to Tom Werman's slick production. Meat Loaf's theatrical vocals work well on "Writing on the Wall." St. Holmes does manage to sing on two songs: "Turn It Up," a great slab of Detroit heavy metal and on an alternate version of "Street Rats" (a bonus track included on this reissue). "Together" slows things down and features Steve McKray on keyboards and a soulful performance by Mr. Loaf. On the contrary, "Hammerdown" is probably the heaviest tune Meat has ever sung. FREE FOR ALL is a great rock & roll party record.

Recorded at the Sound Pit, Atlanta, Georgia. Includes liner notes by Gary Graff.

Reissue producer: Bruce Dickinson.

Personnel: Ted Nugent (vocals, guitar, bass); Derek St. Holmes (vocals, guitar); Meat Loaf (vocals); Steve McRay (keyboards, background vocals); Rob Grange (bass); Cliff Davies (drums, percussion, background vocals); Tom Werman (percussion).

Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Ted Nugent's self-titled 1975 debut solo release is a bold expression of gonzo guitarist's sound, image, and abundant attitude. Ted had what was essentially a touring band with Amboy Dukes bassist Rob Grange, fellow Michiganite Derek St. Holmes on vocals and guitar, and Cliff Davies on drums. During days off from the mega-road trip that preceded this album, the group recorded its first record. Co-produced by famed hard-rock/metal helmsman Tom Werman, "Stranglehold" has the impromptu jamming feel of a live show. Like "Deuce" for Kiss, the first track of a first album can define an act. "Stranglehold" leads straight into the no-holds-barred "Stormtroopin'," where the riffs are non-stop. The boogieish "Hey ...

Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). With their 1984 release, the pleasantly titled BALLS TO THE WALL, German metallists Accept set their sights on the last frontier the band had yet to conquer--America. Like their contemporaries the Scorpions, who also specialized in hard rock and hailed from Germany, Accept started out as a straight up heavy metal band, but as the '80s wore on, softened their high volume sound with a dose of melody. While BALLS TO THE WALL introduced Accept to whole new legion of fans stateside, it wasn't the huge US smash they'd hoped for. Still, BALLS remains one of Accept's best releases, spawning the dark yet anthemic title track, as well as the screamalong ditties "London Leatherboys" and "Love Child." Accept's most notorious album, Balls to the Wall was also their biggest commercial success. Following hot ...

Deep Purple Who Do We Think We Are? CD  (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered

CD $10.45  4.3 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite all the infighting, the band pulled together long enough to record seven tracks that only bolstered the band's reputation. The best-known song, "Woman From Tokyo," boasted a riff as memorable as the one that defined "Smoke on the Water" and was later admitted by Ritchie Blackmore to have been cribbed from Eric Clapton's "Cat Squirrel." Although Blackmore's always-impressive riffing stands out on such songs as "Mary Long" and "Place in Line," this album also spotlights how far Jon Lord's contributions on organ went toward defining the band's sound. Lord's mastery was such that in addition to the impressive solos on "Place in Line," his sweeping runs are the highlight of the stop-and-go "Rat Bat Blue." On this roller coaster ride of an album, the members of Deep Purple ...

Scott Tuma's sophomore effort is once again rooted deeply in the soil of the forgotten ghosts of American music's past. Like Hard Again, Tuma crafts long, ambiguous soundscapes made with real instruments that meet the listener in a territory where memory, illusion, sense impression, and emotion share a peaceful, if somewhat uneasy relationship to one another. Tuma is very much an American primitive; he can rightfully be placed alongside people like Harry Partch and Henry Flynt but sounds like neither one though he evokes their independence. Each note of this sonic tapestry is considered for its textural ...

CD $11.49  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Compiling recordings from KC & the Sunshine Band's 1993 and 1994 tours, Get Down Tonight: Greatest Hits Live makes for decent souvenir of the constantly touring band's show. KC's voice seems a little thinner than in its heyday, but the enthusiasm and his good-humored attitude make up for it. There are quite a few covers that would have worked better in a crowded and sunny amphitheater, but zealous versions of all the hits that helped sell 75 million records are included. The early-'90s version of the Sunshine Band features ...

Issued in early 2008, just as the surprisingly successful JUNO soundtrack garnered Adam Green and, moreso, his Moldy Peaches bandmate Kimya Dawson a sudden mainstream spotlight, SIXES & SEVENS finds the New York City-based singer-songwriter working his indie-crooner mojo. With his deep voice and wry lyrics, Green ...
