| | Harry Nilsson Nilsson Sings Newman CD Harry Nilsson Discography of CDs
Digitally remastered by Elliott Federman (SAJE Sound, New York, New York).
Released in 1970, the same year as Randy Newman's acclaimed second album (12 SONGS), this outing finds Harry Nilsson applying his famed multi-octave vocal range to Newman's witty, finely crafted compositions. (Nilsson, a wonderful songwriter in his own right, had hinted at this collaboration with the inclusion of one Newman song on his previous record, HARRY.) While many of the tunes here would be performed by the more gruff-voiced Newman himself during the course of his first few albums, Nilsson's dynamic, nuanced singing portrays these highly melodic narratives in a much more delicate light.
The two are perfectly suited for one another: with Newman accompanying Nilsson on piano, the singer offers an achingly sweet and funny take on "Love Story," saunters playfully through "Yellow Man," and belts out "The Beehive State" as a barroom ditty. Both artists would, of course, go on to greater recognition, but this charming collection stands as a fascinating snapshot of two quirky creative minds working together to wonderful effect.
Personnel includes Nilsson (vocals); Randy Newman (piano).
Recorded at RCA's Music Center Of The World, Hollywood, California. Originally released on RCA (4289). Includes liner notes by Randy Newman, Curtis Armstrong, and Dean Torrence.

Nilsson Sings Newman
$9.35 One of the Canterbury scene's most revered bands, Hatfield and the North made up for the brevity of their career with some fascinating music. Always adventurous, the quartet had the keen sense to realize that only the most hardened jazz fans respond to numerous key changes and exceedingly complex time signatures, and thus enlivened their live set with the odd gnome smashing, suggestive lyrics, and jokey song titles. It worked a charm, with the band quickly amassing a large, loyal following at home in Britain and across the continent. On their eponymous debut, Hatfield stunningly ...
| | Hatfield & The North Rotters' Club CD (1975)
Nilsson Sings Newman
$9.19 Hatfield and the North's second LP stands as a high watermark for the prog rock associated with England's Canterbury scene and, while filled with stunning musicianship, demonstrates both the strengths and some of the weaknesses of the Hatfield style. Dave Stewart on keyboards, Phil Miller on guitar, Richard Sinclair on bass and vocals, and Pip Pyle on drums (supplemented by a few guest instrumentalists and the ever-ethereal Northettes with their "la la" backing vocals) generally show an admirable sense of restraint and, like their Canterbury peers, are careful to avoid the pomposity and bombast of better-known prog rockers of the era, such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Yes. But the Hatfields might actually have been light to a fault, particularly whenever a segue from one of their convoluted instrumental passages into a Richard Sinclair vocal vehicle occurred. Sinclair shares a bit of Robert Wyatt's singing ...
| | Harry Nilsson Nilsson Schmilsson CD (1971) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Nilsson Sings Newman
$6.79 Produced by Barbara Streisand's producer Richard Perry, 1971's NILSSON SCHMILSSON retains all of Harry Nilsson's wonderful songwriting and warm singing, but presents them in a decidedly rock-based setting. Nilsson's decision to combine his quirky, tongue-in-cheek Tin Pan Alley aesthetic with rock arrangements proved to be a successful one, and contributions from a stellar cast of British and American studio regulars didn't hurt either. The result was the artist's most focused, consistent, and accessible album. It also heralded Nilsson's commercial breakthrough.
From the opening notes of "Gotta Get Up," Nilsson is in complete control, fronting the proceedings with grace and ease. The album yielded a number of hits: "Coconut" (as in "put the lime in the coconut") and "Jump Into the Fire" were two, but his highest chart placement came with a song he didn't write, "Without You," a song penned by the English band Badfinger. ...
| | Gentle Giant Free Hand CD (1975) Anniversary Edition; 35th Anniversary Edition
Nilsson Sings Newman
$10.75 The follow-up to 1974's surprisingly well-received THE POWER & THE GLORY, Gentle Giant's FREE HAND marks the pinnacle of the British prog-rock group's international success. (Like its predecessor, it appeared on the U.S. charts.) While the band's eccentricities--complex song structures, strange vocal harmonies--are present, these tunes are framed in a slightly more pop-conscious way, as on the funky, elastic title track. The ensemble also indulges in its occasional penchant for medieval music on the jaunty "Talybont," arguably making this the archetypal Gentle Giant album.
Free Hand is perhaps Gentle Giant's most realized effort. ...
| | Gentle Giant Power And The Glory CD (1974) Anniversary Edition
Nilsson Sings Newman
$10.75 One of Gentle Giant's most successful albums, 1974's THE POWER & THE GLORY managed to sneak briefly into the U.S. charts, an unusual feat for the lauded, but never terribly popular, U.K. prog-rock band. Though the record is considered "accessible" by Gentle Giant standards, it is filled with the group's trademark break-neck time changes and bizarre vocal harmonies (the restless "Cogs in Cogs") with occasional moments of relative quiet (the serene passages of "Aspirations") rounding out the strangely fascinating proceedings.
The Power and the Glory was the point where Gentle Giant abandoned the more obvious lyrical sound that had characterized the quieter moments of their earlier records. Starting with "Proclamation" and "So Sincere," they shoot for a combination of dissonance and virtuosity that leaves little in these two tracks resolved. "Aspirations" and "No God's a Man" mark something of a return to their earlier, more acoustic-driven and ...
| | Taylor Swift Fearless CD (2008) Enhanced CD
Nilsson Sings Newman
$13.65 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps ...

Travis's second album THE MAN WHO made them one of the biggest bands in the UK. With all eyes upon the group for a follow-up, the foursome opts not for the deconstructed expectation-confounded tactics of Radiohead's KID A, but instead continues on the same path they'd already ...
