Released in 1970, the same year as Randy Newman's acclaimed second album (12 SONGS), this outing finds Harry Nilsson applying his famed multi-octave vocal range to Newman's witty, finely crafted compositions. (Nilsson, a wonderful songwriter in his own right, had hinted at this collaboration with the inclusion of one Newman song on his previous record, HARRY.) While many of the tunes here would be performed by the more gruff-voiced Newman himself during the course of his first few albums, Nilsson's dynamic, nuanced singing portrays these highly melodic narratives in a much more delicate light.
The two are perfectly suited for one another: with Newman accompanying Nilsson on piano, the singer offers an achingly sweet and funny take on "Love Story," saunters playfully through "Yellow Man," and belts out "The Beehive State" as a barroom ditty. Both artists would, of course, go on to greater recognition, but this charming collection stands as a fascinating snapshot of two quirky creative minds working together to wonderful effect.

Hatfield and the North's second LP stands as a high watermark for the prog rock associated with England's Canterbury scene and, while filled with stunning musicianship, demonstrates both the strengths and some of the weaknesses of the Hatfield style. Dave Stewart on keyboards, Phil Miller on guitar, Richard Sinclair on bass and vocals, and Pip Pyle on drums (supplemented by a few guest instrumentalists and the ever-ethereal Northettes with their "la la" backing vocals) generally show an admirable sense of restraint and, like their Canterbury peers, are careful to avoid the pomposity and bombast of better-known prog rockers of the era, such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Yes. But the Hatfields might actually have been light to a fault, particularly whenever a segue from one of their convoluted instrumental passages into a Richard Sinclair vocal vehicle occurred. Produced by Barbara Streisand's producer Richard Perry, 1971's NILSSON SCHMILSSON retains all of Harry Nilsson's wonderful songwriting and warm singing, but presents them in a decidedly rock-based setting. Nilsson's decision to combine his quirky, tongue-in-cheek Tin Pan Alley aesthetic with rock arrangements proved to be a successful one, and contributions from a stellar cast of British and American studio regulars didn't hurt either. The result was the artist's most focused, consistent, and accessible album. It also heralded Nilsson's commercial breakthrough.
From the opening notes of "Gotta Get Up," Nilsson is in complete control, fronting the proceedings with grace and ease. The album yielded a number of hits: "Coconut" (as in "put the lime in the coconut") and "Jump Into the Fire" were two, but his highest chart placement came with a song he didn't write, "Without You," a song penned by the English band Badfinger. ...

One of Gentle Giant's most successful albums, 1974's THE POWER & THE GLORY managed to sneak briefly into the U.S. charts, an unusual feat for the lauded, but never terribly popular, U.K. prog-rock band.
