| | Farewell To Freeway Definitions CD Farewell To Freeway Discography of CDs
Canadian metal quintet Farewell to Freeway mix hardcore, screamo, alternative, and progressive strains of metal with tight instrumental work and vocal interplay. Their unique hybrid is summed up on the band's debut full length, DEFINITIONS. In the way they shift from ferocious riffing and gruff, demonic-sounding vocals to soaring, harmony-laden melodic choruses, Farewell to Freeway can sometimes sound like different bands within the same song, but it's that very eclecticism that makes them appealing. DEFINITIONS is apt to surprise metal fans by proving that Farewell to Freeway don't necessarily adhere to definitions, and are all the better for it.

| | Dethklok Metalocalypse: Dethalbum II CDs (2009) Bonus DVD; Deluxe Edition
Definitions CD music
$15.55 Brendon Small and Gene Hoglan proved their animated death metal band Dethklok had the chops to rock out like a living, breathing group on THE DETHALBUM. On DETHALBUM II, Small and Hoglan make Dethklok sound more like a real band than ever before--for better and worse. Without a doubt, these songs rock hard. The production is tighter and the attack is even heavier than it was on the first album, but surprisingly, ...

| | Matt Marque Nothing Personal CD (2004)
Definitions songs
$10.75 Matt Marque must have taken to heart some of the harsh things critics had to say about his voice after the release of his 2001 debut, Get There. Gone are the J Mascis gurglings and notes that break long before their intended target, replaced here on his lonely sophomore effort, Nothing Personal, by soft Jobim whispers and an abject delivery that has more in common with Nick Drake than Stephen Malkmus -- though musically it owes a great deal to Pavement. Marque recruited an eight-piece collective of Chicago's finest to supply the trimmings, including Lofty Pillars' Glenn Kotche and Joe Ferguson, as well as Toe bassist Griffin Rodriguez and lead guitarist John Schneider ...

| | Grace Slick Collector's Item CD (1971)
Definitions CD music
$6.29 This double-LP/single-CD reissue combines both of the Great Society's live albums, Conspicuous Only by Its Absence and How It Was, and features "Somebody to Love" in its original slower, more menacing version. It also includes the Society's extended version of Grace Slick's "White Rabbit" along with several other haunting originals which strike an exhilarating balance between tight songwriting and psychedelic jamming. Based on his raga-tinged work here, guitarist Darby Slick (Grace's then brother-in-law) deserves a lot more recognition than he's ever received for his pioneering explorations of Eastern scales. Bassist Peter Van Gelder isn't far behind him in the innovation department, and makes significant contributions here on saxophone and flute as well, plunging into John Coltrane territory on the former -- and his work on "White Rabbit," by itself, is worth the price of admission. Additionally, Grace Slick's singing was already about 95-percent of what it would be with the Airplane when she ...
| | Mostly Bears Ed Mitchell Clinic CD (2008)
Definitions music CDs
$11.69 Full of verve and with chops to burn, Mostly Bears start this record off with strong track "The Digital Divide" that sounds a bit like a non-acoustic, amped-up version of Arcade Fire with vocalist Brian Lopez sounding a bit like Win Butler. The group settles the proceedings down a bit with the tight, melodic, rootsy ditty "Leda Atomica" that has an organ used to great effect. But at times Mostly ...
| | Standing Small Oh Sweet Child CD (2008)
Definitions songs
$8.39 "A Christ-centered acoustic band that tastefully blends acoustic driven songs, with a beautiful melody." (CD Baby), Standing Small has been developing their style since early 2005; through weeks of hard-fought practices and over 25,000 miles of touring. Ryan, Rob, Corey, and Ben have been featured at such venues as Jammin Java (Columbia, SC), Joe's Java (Wilmington, OH), Cafe Jam (Greensboro, NC), Rockwells (New Jersey) and the Icthus (Wilmore, KY) and Lifelight (Sioux Falls, SD) Christian Music Festivals; and have shared the stage with bands such as The Myriad, Cool Hand Luke, 100 Year Storm, and Edison Glass. 13-hour drives, failed mapquest directions, broken guitars, malfunctioning bass heads, flus, 5 flat tires, and one snapped trailer have anything but stifled their determination and desire to fulill their mission: to be "More than a Band... a Ministry ...
