The Nylons' performing career began in 1980 at a time when a cappella outfits were not in vogue. The fact that the Nylons were unlike any a cappella act on the scene made them stand out and earned them accolades and a devoted audience almost immediately. The band has existed in one form or another for more than 25 years, but it is the original quartet of Claude Morrison, Arnold Robinson, Paul Cooper, and Mark Connors that created their most beloved recordings. Happy Together was the band's fourth album and is probably their most popular, commercially. Taking a small step forward from Seamless, Happy Together still uses electronic percussion but not in an intrusive way. In fact, the rhythms of the album add a worldly vibe to the recordings, and allow the boys to be a bit more playful with their voices. The most successful tracks on the album were covers of "Happy Together" and "Kiss Him Goodbye," but the spirited version of "Chain Gang" deserves mention. As on their previous releases, the band's originals, mostly by Cooper, are the standouts on the album. "This Island Earth" is top-notch and remains one of Cooper's finest, while Arnold Robinson's vocals on "Crazy in Love (Morning Comes Early)" and Connors voice carrying "It's What They Call Magic" lifts Cooper's writing to a new level. Morrison's "Grown Man Cry" is stunning, and the song's simple, touching arrangement sounds like it could have easily fit on One Size Fits All. Connors and Cooper penned the joyous "Face In The Crowd," another notch in their belts. Only the trite "Dance of Love" fails to please, although it's certainly not a terrible entry in their catalog. After the slightly disappointing Seamless, Happy Together was a step in the right direction and sounds like a true compromise between the guys' artistic approach to their music, and the record label's insistence on a more commercial sound. ~ Steve "Spaz" Schnee

Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. Spinning Lily is a New England-based acoustic band whose debut album shows what can happen when four highly talented musicians who happen to be fast friends get together to play their favorite tunes: an exuberant blending of sensibilities that demonstrates not just a deep love for the music but a close personal bond. They love to play together and it shows. This CD is made up of sixteen instrumental sets drawn primarily from the traditional music of Ireland, Scotland, England, the United States, and Canada. Jigs, reels, hornpipes, waltzes, and marches all find their way onto the playlist, each one inspiring the same question when the band was considering what to include on the album: "How can we NOT play that one?" Included with the traditional material are compositions by such well-known contemporary musicians as Jere Canote, Dave Richardson, Charlie Lennon, Vivian Williams, Colin Hamilton, and Ale Moller. Add to the mix three original tunes by the band and you have a delightful medley of familiar favorites with new discoveries. Spinning Lily is made up of four professional instrumentalists, each with an extensive performing and recording history: Fiddler Amy Basse is a longtime mainstay of the Boston bluegrass and Irish music scene, much in demand as a band member or leader of sessions. Among those with whom she has performed onstage are Tom Rush, Lori McKenna, Aoife Clancy, and Robbie O'Connell. Mike Herr is, quite simply, one of the world's greatest autoharpists. Winner of the 1998 International Autoharp Championship and two-time National Autoharp Champion, he has performed and taught at concerts and festivals throughout the US and in England. His precise, graceful melody and harmony picking adds a distinctive feature to Spinning Lily's sound. Multi-instrumentalist Glenn Scott adds a variety of voices on fingerstyle and flatpicked guitar, mandolin, mandocello, autoharp, and 10-string Celtic cittern. Equally at home with Celtic, blues, contra, old-time American or bluegrass, some of his band credits include Married With Chitlins, The Moose Hill Ramblers, and (along with Mike Herr) The Harpbreakers. Pianist Jill Smith is a master accompanist whose unshakeable groove, flowing countermelodies and tasteful chord work provide the rhythmic foundation for the band.
