As the second album to document the second Mahavishnu Orchestra, this one isn't as, well, apocalyptic as its predecessor, yet it does focus more intently on the band itself. Jean-Luc Ponty's curling electric violin lines help give this Mahavishnu band a more European sound than its predecessor, and some of the orchestral concepts of Apocalypse work their way into the picture via comments by a string trio and trumpet/sax duo. This band also had some interest in a bombastic funk direction that may have been borrowed from Mr. "Chameleon" Herbie Hancock, and would later be followed by Mahavishnu Two's drummer, Michael Walden. Gayle Moran's ethereal vocals don't date as badly as those on many jazz-rock records; at least she can sing. Overall, this Mahavishnu edition is more refined and not as aggressive as the first -- although they could charge ahead pretty hard, as "Be Happy" and "On the Way Home to Earth" demonstrate -- yet they were still capable of making memorable electric music. ~ Richard S. | Visions Of The Emerald Beyond Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) Visions of the Emerald Beyond by the Mahavishnu Orchestra Some of the very best music I have ever heard, and will ever have heard in my entire life. Although the sophisticated material recorded here runs the risk of being 'musicians' music', the sheer joyful virtuosity demonstrated can be enjoyed by one and all. One of the Mahavishnu Orchestra's best recordings. Not just jazz, but incredibly inspired music. Submitted by Kenyon (Seattle, WA. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Not The Best Is Right A few people apparently dug this - I only partly did. After the disaster of Apocalypse, McL retrenched and modified his 'vision' down to a smaller group including a small acoustic section, but still doggedly incorporating some treacly female vocals & quasi-worship choruses. He still didn't get it - jamming pop-ethereal together with chamber classical under an umbrella of fusion and funk bombast was still forcing far too disparate elements together. They were a Grand Canyon apart in dynamics, aesthetics, and most important [though obviously not to the notoriously stubborn and sometimes elitist McL] in appeal to original MO listener's preferences. Sometimes it sort of worked; Visions has its moments, moreso than Apocalypse, but the parts that don't work or are unengaging are still too many to make this a completely satisfying FUSION album. In that, it's still neither fish nor fowl. And, as if to flaunt self-indulgence, there is the future specter of disco in "Can't Stand Your Funk," a harbinger of the crass music industry commercialism that would soon strangle what was left of jazz-rock fusion's original promise out of existence by the end of the 70's. If you weren't a million seller like the BeeGees or K.C. and the Sunshine Band, etc., good luck getting a contract renewal. McL then chucked it all for acoustic Shakti and college/jazzbar/coffeehouse elites. This CD still has some scorching soloing, nice playing [esp. by Ponty who actually outdoes McL!] overall, but for the "real" MO - stick with the first two LPs, the Lost Trident Sessions, and the ego-clashes-on-parade MO Live CD. Not the Best MO, But the Best MO Music Ever Please note that the reviewer above probably intended to rate this album with five stars, but the rating defaults to three. If one doesn't see the rating box, then the album winds up with a three-star rating.
This album by the second incarnation of John McLauglin's Mahavishnu Orchestra (MO2) is the best of all time in my opinion. Though not quite up to the stellar level of MO1, MO2 is a great group, and with this album they have made music history. I've worn-out three vinyl versions of "Visions" and now have two CDs at different locations. If this is playing in my final moments on this earth, then I'll die happy.

Visions Of The Emerald Beyond album
$21.45 THE PROPHECY began in 2001 when John Bennett and Greg O'Shea met up with vocalist Matt Lawson one bleak and grey evening in the now demolished Empress bar in Bradford. Two weeks later THE PROPHECY had recorded a demo CD Her Embrace, My Ruin at Performance Studios. From this point on the band decided to get serious and spent six months enclaved in their practice studio. The result of this was the To End All Hope demo which, although far from perfect, still stood high above the crowd of doom metal wannabe hopefuls. It was this demo CD that secured the band its place on the first DOOMINATION OF EUROPE tour with Mourning Beloveth and the now defunct Relapse artists Morgion. The band released their Ashes debut just in time for the start of the tour and this was quickly picked up by local label Black Doom Records. Just five months later the band then went on to play THE DOOMINATION OF AMERICA. This was a month long tour, coast to coast, as far south as Austin, Texas and as far north as Portland, Oregon. Few states were left untouched by the Doomination cavalcade...With this grueling tour of America under their belts who was better placed to support My Dying Bride on their Halloween 2003 tour than THE PROPHECY? Playing to sold out crowds at the London Astoria, Utrecht's Tivoli and Antwerp's Hof der Loo. The tour was a resounding success and nicely rounded off the year for the band.In 2004 work began on the follow-up to the Ashes CD. The songs were fully written and finalized and the band entered the studio in September to record drums. On the gig front the band played the BLOODSTOCK 04 festival getting KKKK in Kerrang! They then went on to headline the DOOMINATION OF EUROPE II with Australian band The Eternal in support. This tour expanded on the previous year's Doomination, taking in Hungary, Italy, Germany as well as Spain, Portugal and the Benelux. This gruelling tour was to take its toll however, with second guitarist Christian Moore-Wainwright leaving the band shortly afterwards.2005 was to be difficult year for THE PROPHECY. Lineup problems resulted in the band playing as a four-piece for much of the ...
