Marcus Miller has a resume most people in the music world would envy. Miller is a bassist who's also a producer, arranger, composer (including movie soundtracks), and multi-instrumentalist who has appeared on over 200 albums. His first for Concord, MARCUS, is a savory stew of jazz, funk, pop, and R&B. There are lean, stirring versions of classics by Stevie Wonder ("Higher Ground") and Tower of Power ("What Is Hip"), soothing vocals from Corrine Bailey Rae, and a tip of the hat to Miller's old boss Miles Davis ("Jean-Pierre"). Add the saxophones of David Sanborn and Tom Scott to the mix and one has a recipe for some nifty, debonair, groove-centric jazz.Down Beat (p.70) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Miller lets it rip with all manner of strip-slapping grooviness over robo-tough drum grooves." JazzTimes (p.102) - "[He] unleashes his inimitable chops on hard-hitting instrumentals like the Indian-flavored 'Blast'....He also turns in a moving rendition of the Broadway tune and oft-covered jazz standard 'When I Fall in Love'..." MUST GET THIS CD !!!!! I had the great pleasure to see Marcus LIVE at BB Kings Blues Club and Grill in New York and he played most of this CD and plenty of his prior hits. If you can only buy one CD, GET THIS ONE !!!! Submitted by mary.moore (Jersey City, New Jersey, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Best of the Same Just Got Surprisingly Better For at least a decade, electric bass maestro, Marcus Miller has had a formula: a poppy blend of fusion, soul, funk, and even classical stylings with plenty of nods to his heroes- Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, David Sanborn and Luther Vandross. In this, his 1st for Concord, he got quite a bit funkier, cleaner, and even more modern.
Deniecy Williams' 'Free' is such a standard of soul perfection it's hard to believe that Marcus and Corine Bailey Rea could breath this much new life into such a perfect song.
Though are no lows here, this is not a jazz record, not even a jazz fusion record. Here we have a soul record in the truest sense of the word, and it's real funk, no doubt! Submitted by St.Dvy (Windham, Me.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase Marcus CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Steve Cole Ny La CD (2003)
Marcus album
$9.29 Burgeoning smooth jazz superstar Steve Cole continues to bridge the gap between pop-jazz and classic R&B on his third studio album, NY LA. Featuring strong melodic statements and truly funky keyboards via the likes of Brian Culbertson and Marquis "Hami" Dair, NY LA is a moody and solid affair. From the disco-influenced "Off Broadway," which harkens back to the best work of the Crusaders, to the Donald Byrd-esque "Interlude IV," tenor saxophonist Cole deftly crosses the boundary from jazz soloist to R&B heavyweight. More Grover Washington, Jr. than Kenny G., Cole manages to keep things organic and simple -- despite the use of programmed drum beats and synthesizers -- a lesson some of his contemporaries could learn. Also adding depth are the vocal tracks featuring the crisply soulful Mauli B., whose star-making performance on "Every Little Thing" is a highlight on this already stellar release. ~ Matt Collar

| | Steve Oliver 3-D CD (2004)
Marcus CD music
$14.45 As one reviewer said of the cheerful music and personality of this increasingly popular voice of smooth jazz guitar, it's Disneyland all the time with him. In other words, Positive Energy, the name of his second genre disc, wasn't just a happy marketing tool. And the title of this disc is appropriate, too, because with the co-production help of founding Spyro Gyra keyboardist Tom Schuman, Oliver digs deep into a rich variety of influences for a multifaceted romp through the worlds of pop, jazz, urban/hip-hop, worldbeat, Brazilian, and Latin music. While focusing as always on his classic acoustic guitar and brilliant "vocalese" to convey the lead melodies on the instrumentals, he stretches into edgier blues territory with his lesser-heard electric on "In the Shade of Cool." Joining all-star guests like Fourplay drummer Harvey Mason (who adds his gentle rhythmic touch to the lush romantic atmospheres of the title track) and saxophonist Eric Marienthal (soulful harmony on the lilting ballad "She's Got the Way-O," punchy riffs and call-and-response amidst the brass, retro-soul, and ...
| | Jeff Kashiwa Peace Of Mind CD (2004)
Marcus music CDs
$12.39 Jeff Kashiwa has a fluent if generic style on soprano, alto, and tenor, which fits perfectly into the "feel good" smooth music that he performs on "Peace of Mind." The 11 selections clock in between 3:46 and 5:14 and were clearly recorded with hopes of getting maximum radio airplay. Kashiwa's rhythm section is effective if anonymous (despite the presence of Brian Bromberg on bass) with the focus being almost entirely on the leader's melodic playing. While the music is lightly grooving and mildly soulful and Kashiwa plays well, no surprises occur and this set never rises above the level of pleasant background music. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Brian Culbertson Bringing Back The Funk CD (2008)
Marcus songs
$11.65 The music of light jazz superstar Brian Culbertson is more likely to be associated with candlelit dinners and walks on the beach than shaking one's tailfeather on the dance floor, but BRINGING BACK THE FUNK aims to change all that. With help from a veritable who's who of funk luminaries, including Maceo Parker, Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley, Bernie Worrell, and Sharon Jones, among others, the trombonist/keyboardist/composer lays down some serious grooves on tracks like "Funkin' Like My Father," "Hollywood Swinging," and "You Got to Funkatize." There is enough of a smooth sheen here to satisfy Culbertson's old fans, but enough funk punch to keep things bouncing.
