(2 Customer Reviews)
Following on the heel's of 1991's self-titled smash, Naughty by Nature found themselves pressured to make an album that would stand up to their previous work. 19 NAUGHTY III finds them making a valiant effort to do so, and achieving the near impossibl -striking gold twice. Where in `91 it was the ubiquitous anthem "O.P.P.," in '93 it was "Hip Hop Hooray." The album offers several stellar songs that bridge the gap between accessibility and street grit, all executed with a relaxed and seemingly effortless cool. Thanks to DJ Kay Gee's loose, head-bobbing beats, and the juxtaposition of Treach's smooth, melodic flow with Vin Rock's angry spitting makes the group a trio in the most vital sense, with each member pulling his own weight. Worthwhile guest appearances by Heavy D and their mentor, Queen Latifah, are peppered throughout this mostly excellent album.
Personnel: Naughty By Nature (rap); Dave Bellochio (keyboards); Yossi Fein (bass); 118th Street Posse, Ben Adler, Lynn M. Scott, Dream Hampton (background vocals).
Producers: S.I.D. Reynolds, Naughty By Nature.

$13.15 Enter the Jacka. The death of 2Pac in the mid 90's ripped the heart out of West Coast Hip Hop. At the same time a young street poet named the Jacka was honing his skills in the Bay Area Rap game. Always open minded, he was influenced by b-boys and thugs, pimps and Imams. The Jacka has since developed into an established, well-rounded, well-versed emcee in the right place to bring the West Coast some serious attention. The Jacka's music is a reflection of his life. He witnessed the birth of the dope game and the drug war that followed, as the battle was waged in his community, on his block, and in his house. Memories of departed loved ones haunt his mind and soul. His release is to share his experiences through his music. Reality hurts. Rap is the Jacka's medicine. That and some purple. Jacka's success ...

$14.79 Nanni-Salce Intention Mark Nanni and David Salce have been playing jazz music together for more than a decade. The styles have ranged from piano trio standard and original, to quintet all-original, to organ funk. The flavors have continued to evolve over the years, as have Mark’s and David’s roles as musicians in their respective communities (Syracuse and Ithaca, NY.) Both are influenced by and steeped in multiple styles of music and have made their livings over a wide range of musical opportunities, together and separately. Nanni is a pianist, vocalist, composer, arranger and producer. Salce is the sympathetic rhythm on drum kit to all of their musical adventures. The chemistry between these musicians is what makes the Intention what it is: spontaneous, soulful, Neo-Traditional Party-Jazz music! While Nanni and Salce are the core of the Intention, and indeed play a number of shows as a duo, ...

$6.05 The title track from YOUR SECRET LOVE won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. It was also nominated for Best R&B Song.
An album for lovers, plain and simple. Lovers of others, lovers of smooth, soulful music, and, most of all, lovers of Luther Vandross' singular vocal talent. There's nothing really new here, and that's probably the way it should be--why mess with success? The arrangements are tasteful, spare and elegant. The songs--all ballads, most of them in the mold of the clean, airy, atmospheric funk Luther has specialized in through the years--are about the love emotion, and all the emotional entanglements it brings out.
"Love Don't Love You Anymore" is a haunting number, replete with treated, bells-in-heaven background vocals, and this ...
| | Brooks O'Dell I'm Your Man: The Anthology 1963-1972 CD (2008)
19 Naughty III songs
$14.55 Aside from a sole mid-charting hit in 1963, "Watch Your Step" (included here), soul singer Brooks O'Dell didn't make much of a commercial splash during a career that saw him wander among several labels in the 1960s and '70s. This 26-track CD has much of the material he managed to record, including mid-'60s singles for Gold, Bell, and Columbia; a late-'60s 45 for Valentine; early-'70s singles for Mankind; a couple unissued mid-'60s cuts for Scepter, and previously unreleased tracks produced by Swamp Dogg in the early '70s. While some of this is avidly sought after by soul collectors, O'Dell was a pretty average if respectable soul singer, with a slightly rougher vocal tone than the typical performer in the genre. Aside from Swamp Dogg, some other big names had a role in some of his sessions, with a young Kenny Gamble and Thom Bell helping to write some of his 1963-1964 sides for Luther Dixon's Gold label. One of those was "Watch Your Step," an impressive uptown soul number, even if it was rather close to Freddie Scott's smash "Hey Girl" in melody. The minor-keyed 1965 orchestrated single "You Better Make Up Your Mind" is another highlight, but otherwise this collection is just an OK listen for the most part, finding O'Dell unable to firmly settle on a signature style. There are hints of gutsy blues-soul in "It Hurts Me to My Heart" and "I Got What It Takes, Pts. 1 & 2 & 3" (sic), yet "Walkin' in the Shadow of Love" sounds like a studied Brook Benton imitation. The Swamp Dogg-produced cuts are in an updated style, yet are sometimes disappointingly laid-back and anonymous. The collection's unlikely to appeal to a broader audience than soul cultists, but those cultists will appreciate Kent/Ace's typically attentive packaging and liner notes. ~ Richie Unterberger
