While the voice of Kevin Cronin is probably the best known ingredient of the REO Speedwagon sound, guitarist Gary Richrath's smoking leads are also an important element (if an unfortunately oft-overlooked one), and their last release of the '70s--1979's NINE LIVES--contains some of Richrath's best six-string work.
While the album doesn't contain any compositions that made a dent in the singles charts, NINE LIVES is another consistent REO release, and marks the final rock-based release before Cronin and company stormed the charts with their next studio release, the 1981 mega-hit HI-INFIDELITY. NINE LIVES contains some of REO's best rock numbers, such as "Back on the Road Again," "Only the Strong Survive," "Heavy on Your Love," and "Easy Money."

Nine Lives album
$8.39 All songs written or co-written by Lonesome Dave Peverett except "My Babe" (Bobby Hatfield/Bill Medley) and "Terraplane Blues" (Robert Johnson).
Undoubtedly Foghat's finest album, 1975's FOOL FOR THE CITY, could cruise along on the strength of the band's biggest and best single, "Slow Ride," alone. In addition to that choogling stoner classic, however, the record also finds the bluesy British rock group offering up the fist-pumping, arena-worthy title track and a oddly funky version of Robert Johnson's "Terraplane Blues," not to mention the uncharacteristically melancholy "Take It or ...

| | REO Speedwagon You Can Tune A Piano, But You Can't Tuna Fish CD (1978) Remastered
Nine Lives music CDs
$6.79 REO Speedwagon's 1978 release, the humorously-titled YOU CAN TUNE A PIANO BUT YOU CAN'T TUNA FISH, proved to be one of the band's last true rock-based albums before the band set its sights on a more commercially-based direction in the '80s.
The album became one of REO's best sellers of the '70s (a decade in which the band was better known for their live shows than any hit singles), and showed that they were finally breaking through to a wide audience. Two REO classics reside here--the rockers "Roll with the Changes" and "Time for Me to Fly," making YOU CAN TUNE A PIANO BUT YOU CAN'T TUNA FISH a pivotal album in REO's career.

Nine Lives songs
$7.59 Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first-generation masters. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's revolutionary "Super Bit Mapping" system.
In the early '80s, all the holdover rock bands from the '70s either made the transition splendidly, becoming bigger than ever, or crashed and burned. Longtime touring warhorse REO Speedwagon was a fine example of the former category. Having spent most of the '70s as an opening band for bigger rock acts, the group scored one of 1981's biggest hits with HI INFIDELITY.
A perfect mixture of melodic hard rockers and sweet power ballads, the album finally broke REO commercially. Featured was one of their best known odes to heartbreak, the hit single "Keep on Lovin' You," as well as "Take it on the Run," and the harder-edged "Tough Guys" and "Out of Season."

| | Michelle Branch Spirit Room CD (2001)
Nine Lives album
$22.65 Michelle Branch was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
Michelle Branch has a voice that'll be familiar to fans of alternative rock radio, since it's that breathy, close-miked sound beloved of pop-rock girls from Fiona Apple to Britney. She uses it to good effect on her debut, THE SPIRIT ROOM, accompanied by a coterie of LA session veterans who provide her with the sort of assured musical expertise that only big bucks can provide. Each song is hook-laden and charmingly sung. Standouts are the infectiously poppy album-opener "Everywhere" and the oddly retro-sounding "Sweet Misery." The overall effect conjured by THE SPIRIT ROOM is of an assured pop debut--Branch certainly leaves you curious to hear her next effort.
Recorded at Sunset Sound, Henson Recording Studio and Ananda Studios, Hollywood, California.
Personnel includes: Michelle Branch (vocals, guitar, keyboards); John Shanks (guitar, keyboards, bass, programming); Patrick Warren (keyboards); Kenny Aronoff, Vinnie Colaiuta ...
