For his band's second studio outing, band leader Ryan McPhun hiked around Africa, Thailand, and his native New Zealand with a cheap tape recorder. McPhun morphed the sounds he captured--natural-world percolations, monastic chants, aboriginal folk--into a modern acid-pop masterpiece via layered overdubs and beautiful Animal Collective-esque harmonies. McPhun may have started with an ethnomusicology project, but he wound up reinvigorating psych-world music, a genre that hasn't been this entrancing since the `60s output of Os Mutantes. Terrific.
