| | Dan Quartet Skea But That Ain't This CD Dan Quartet Skea Discography of CDs
Before relocating to Vermont in 2002, Dan Skea spent several decades as house pianist in Las Vegas Casino showrooms, including the Sands, Hilton, Sahara and Hacienda. During this time he accompanied numerous headline artists, but his favorites were always those with jazz leanings, such as Joe Williams, Mel Torme, Marlena Shaw and Diahann Carroll. In 1976 he formed the jazz-fusion group Full Circle, which released an album of the same name featuring drummer Alex Acuña and percussionist Don Alias. His current quartet includes reedman Chris Peterman, bassist John Rivers, and drummer Geza Carr — all first call musicians on the local scene. Dan’s original compositions are characterized by intriguing and compelling harmonic progressions in formal structures that other musicians find challenging and pleasurable to play. | | Mike Marshall & Darol Anger Mike Marshall & Darol Anger With Vasen CD (2007)
But That Ain't This songs
$12.79 The pairing of Americans -- mandolinist Mike Marshall and violinist Darol Anger -- and Swedes -- Väsen -- is a meeting of minds and styles. Both are well grounded in their native traditions, but also versed in original acoustic music. They show their breadth here, taking in traditional tunes from Sweden ("Penknife Killer") and the U.S. ("Yew Piney Mt."), along with several original pieces and a touch of Braziliana on "Os Pintinhos." There's style and wit in the music, as you'd expect from musicians this good. More interesting is the perfectly natural way they all mesh together and complement each other, finding a middle ground that's far more than a simple compromise. There's plenty of delicacy in a piece like "Forslund," but throughout the disc there's a very strong sense of melody, the stock in trade of everyone here. There's no need for anyone to be showy, and it's only at odd moments like the sly fiddle run on "Misch Masch" that you remember these are all virtuosos. So even though it doesn't particularly hew to any tradition, there's enough of a sense of the past to anchor this wonderful slice of new acoustic music. ~ Chris Nickson

$11.29 | | George Benson Bad Benson CD (1974)
But That Ain't This album
$5.95 Although originally titled and released as BAD BENSON in 1974, subsequent reissues were titled TAKE FIVE, to prevent misunderstanding on the part of the public as to the content of the album (i.e. Benson's "worst"). Also, the two bonus tracks finally restore the original recording session track sequence.
Preceding Breezin', his crossover smash for Warner in 19786, Bad Benson shows the guitarist still hanging on to his Wes Montgomery roots in places while stretching his soul-jazz persona into even funkier arenas. CTI had a formula for making funky, accessible jazz and fusion records that in 1974 still held true. Arranged by Don Sebesky, Bad Benson is a collection of delicious, varied, and sometimes confusing choices. Benson's own playing is precise and smooth as always, and guitarist Phil Upchurch ...

But That Ain't This songs
$11.39 Although they appear to be closely related to a sub-species of marine iguana found on some of the islands that are their namesake, Galapagos Now! have very specifically adapted themselves to their environments as a result of millions of years of natural selection and adaptation. It is no mere coincidence that some of them resemble homo-sapiens, a specifically advantageous form of camouflage. A recent M.I.T. spearheaded probe into their make-up revealed that their lead vocals and guitar alchemy comes from a sub-species that closely resembles Jeff Waite (Josephus ...
