Recorded in 1976, Blondie's self-titled debut was part of the New York City/CBGB's crowd's initial salvo of punk/new wave, radically different from anything in the American mainstream at the time. While other CBGB scenemakers strove for either artiness (Television) or primitivism (Ramones), Blondie was always about pure pop, served with a healthy dose of irony. Its early-'60s rock & roll/girl-group roots were never so apparent as on this album--"In the Sun" sounds like a classic slice of sunny '60s West Coast pop, while "In the Flesh" reaches even further back for a '50s ballad feel.
The sly lyrics, Debbie Harry's knowing delivery, and especially Jimmy Destri's gloriously cheesy organ riffs make it apparent that revivalism was never Blondie's intention; the band simply used the past to hijack the punk present and lay claim to a new wave future. Over the next few years, countless groups would adopt the template laid down on the first couple of Blondie albums, with varying degrees of success, but, as this recording makes plain, Blondie did it first and best.

$12.25 Considered by many to be Blondie's best, their second album catches the group poised on the brink of global superstardom. PLASTIC LETTERS' first single, a gender-switched cover of the '60s pop hit "Denise" by Randy and the Rainbows, was a massive British hit which went far towards dispelling the band's second-tier status on the New York punk scene.
The rest of the disc improves immensely on their self-titled debut, with sharper songwriting and better production. Jimmy Destri's Farfisa organ is still the band's main musical focal point, but his playing has evolved, along with the melodies, beyond the simple '60s pastiches of the debut. "Youth Nabbed as Sniper" and "Contact in Red Square" continue the band's fascination with trash culture, but the glorious "I'm Always Touched by Your Presence Dear," written by departed bassist Gary Valentine, is a genuinely heartfelt, if ironic, love song.

Everybody loved Blondie; fans, children, critics, other musicians and senior citizens - and not just because Debbie Harry was its frontperson. This is an unintentional greatest hits record that doesn't let up until the last note of 'Just Go Away' has died. STREETLIFE SERENADE may have been a disappointment to Joel's record company, featuring but one single, "The Entertainer," that barely scraped the Top 40, but it's loaded with songs that came to be signature pieces for the piano man. For years, Joel began his concerts with a piped-in version of the instrumental "The Mexican Connection" and closed them by playing the bittersweet ballad "Souvenir." Another instrumental, the fast and infectious "Root Beer Rag," served as a favorite piano showcase throughout Joel's career, while the snide and clever "The Entertainer" began a career-long obsession with the evils of the pop industry.
Most of the album is about suburbia and its malcontents. While Englishman Elton John, to whom Joel was already being compared, devoted his second major-label album to a concept album about the mythological American West, Joel devoted his to the very real American frontier of strip malls and backyard barbecues in which he grew up. No romanticizing was intended. In case Joel's growing cynicism wasn't already evident, the album's one love song, "Roberta," is written to a hooker.

1979's EAT TO THE BEAT was Blondie's fourth album, and the first to follow the enormous commercial breakthrough of 1978's PARALLEL LINES. Though its singles, the brilliant "Dreaming" and the disco-influenced "Atomic," were lesser hits than PARALLEL LINES' "Heart of Glass" and "One Way or Another," EAT TO THE BEAT's success cemented Blondie's status as by far the most commercially viable of the first wave of New York punk bands.
By this time, the band's always-tenuous connection to punk was barely noticeable; the artsy "Victor," the Springsteen-ish "Union City Blue," written for the soundtrack of Debbie Harry's first film, Steeltown, and the reggae-tinged "Die Young Stay Pretty" are early evidence of the sort of casual genre-hopping which defined the band's next album, AUTOAMERICAN. The ripping title track, "Accidents Never Happen" and the dreamy "Living in the Real World," however, are more typical Blondie fare.

Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether they're products of the American Idol/19 machine or not: Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Rivers Cuomo, P!nk, Lady GaGa, Linda Perry, Ryan Tedder, Muse's Matthew Bellamy, and Justin Hawkins of the Darkness all elbow each other for space here, creating cheerful genre-bending where Sweet gives way to the Scissor Sisters, and it's never, ever necessary for a listener to recognize the allusions, either the intentional or accidental. This two-CD set is slightly misnamed. Not only does it feature the tenor stylings of the great Ben Webster, it also contains a full album by trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison called GEE, BABY AIN'T I GOOD TO YOU and altoist Johnny Hodges' full LP, BLUES A-PLENTY. Webster appears on Edison's album but does not play on all of Hodges'. In fact, he sits out on five of the eleven Hodges tracks.
The music itself is all quite memorable, featuring notables such as trumpeters Art Farmer and Roy Eldridge, pianists Oscar Peterson and Billy Strayhorn, and trombonist Vic Dickenson. Indeed, this album boasts many legends, and with this caliber of musicianship, you can't go wrong. Highlights include Webster's composition, "Ev's Mad" Sweets Edison's "Blues for Bill Basie," and Hodges' "Honey Hill." On the latter, Roy Eldridge reaches into the stratosphere, playing high notes with great precision.
