Gran Ronde may hail from the West Coast, but they bear a striking resemblance to New York City's the Bravery, right down to lead singer Christopher Pearson's double take-inducing similarity to Bravery frontman Sam Endicott. This shouldn't be interpreted as mere imitation -- Gran Ronde is indeed its own band, and each of the members has the musical aptitude to show for it. The group's debut album, Secret Rooms, opens strong with "On and On," a song that is urgent and even subtly aggressive. It's a combination that is quickly established as an integral part of Gran Ronde's sound, and also marks the group as a tight, clear ensemble. Pearson and lead guitarist Neil Parek work in tandem to achieve shimmering effects, and the rhythm section of Bryan Hobbs (bass) and Fernando Sanchez (drums) keeps the band grounded without bogging it down. Though most of Secret Rooms tends toward a bleak, melancholy sound, the album's lighter numbers ("Say Say Say," "Wisdom," and "Come Together") provide bright, lush variation that makes it an enjoyable listen. However, there is one complaint about Secret Rooms that cannot be helped by musicianship. While the album is good and the band is capable, the track placement leaves a bit to be desired; the aforementioned lighter numbers could have been more evenly distributed, and the frenetic closer "Run Me Over" should have been placed in the middle or beginning of the album. Instead of an attempt to make the group stand out from its peers, the song serves as a strong reminder of the similarities between Gran Ronde and their contemporaries. In a way, it's a shame that the group's sound and style is both their greatest strength and liability; they're a talented ensemble, but those who would accuse them of merely aping their counterparts wouldn't be completely baseless in their accusations. That said, while Gran Ronde doesn't set itself apart from other new wave/post-punk revivalists, the band is very good at what it does. ~ Katherine Fulton

Secret Rooms songs
$13.75 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest classics like "Electric Eye" and "Freewheel Burning" -- it probably helps that most traditional Christmas hymns tend to fall into the same brooding minor keys that serve as the foundation for most, if not all, heavy metal songs. While WINTER SONGS, like Twisted Sister's excellent 2006 TWISTED CHRISTMAS collection, ...
| | Tom Waits Glitter And Doom Live CDs (2009) Digipak
Secret Rooms album
$14.38 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get Behind the Mule" from The Mule Variations, "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone, and a haunting version of Leadbelly's "Fannin Street" from Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, to mention just three of the 17 cuts here. But he goes back to his ...

The breakthrough success of DARK SIDE OF THE MOON made WISH YOU WERE HERE a crucial follow-up in strictly commercial terms. Further pressure came from it being Pink Floyd's first recording for a new label, Columbia. Yet the demands on the band only provided Roger Waters with more fodder for his lyrics, which glanced at the band's roots as well as their new responsibilities.

| | Dan Baird Out Of Mothballs CD (2008)
Secret Rooms album
$16.29 In a just world, Dan Baird would be a big ol' rock star, regularly setting stadium-sized crowds into a boogie frenzy with his hot-wired rootsy raunch. However, ever since the Georgia Satellites' Open All Night dropped off the charts, the mainstream has had little use for Baird, but Out of Mothballs, a collection of outtakes and rarities from Baird's archives, offers further proof that the man knows how to get on the good foot and crank out the groove for anyone who cares to listen. Featuring a pair of Georgia Satellites tunes cut for a best-forgotten John Stamos movie in 1990, and a handful of songs that didn't make the cut for Baird's solo albums Buffalo Nickel and Love Songs for the Heart of Hearing, Out of Mothballs may have been stitched together from leftovers, but nearly everything here rocks loud and proud, and it hangs together with road-worn ease just like the man's best albums. If "Rock This Place" or "Shine a Light" don't get your party started, you're either deaf or just don't like this rock ...
