HANS THEESSINK “CALL ME”1992 Blue Groove BG-4020, produced by Hans Theessink & Colin LindenFor Call Me I invited Canadian producer Colin Linden as a co-producer. I had been playing a lot at festivals in N.America and wanted to invite some of the musicians and singers that I'd met on my travels. Most of the backing vocals were sung by the fantastic Bobby King & Terry Evans (wellknown from their work with Ry Cooder). With Maceo Parker, Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley we had one of the funkiest horn sections in the universe. In addition we had Garth Hudson, Richard Bell and Rick Danko of "The Band", and South African sax-and pennywhistle wizzard Morris Goldberg on board. We worked at studios in Munich, Woodstock and Los Angeles, hauling the big old tapes around. The work on CALL ME was a beautiful experience and a few of my most requested songs are included on the album: My own "Call Me", "Rock The boat" and Chuck Berry's "Mabellene". Call Me album
$11.95 Blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa gets up to his usual tricks on THE BALLAD OF JOHN HENRY, dabbling in a variety of genres, but injecting them all with a serious dose of guitar heroics. Like his musical forefather Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bonamassa is both soulful and a shredder, and he brings those qualities to tracks like Tom Waits's "Jockey Full of Bourbon," Ike & Tina Turner's "Funkier Than a Mosquito's Tweeter," and a handful of rock and blues-fused originals. Bonamassa has a progressive sensibility, but that never keeps him, on any of BALLAD's 12 tracks, from rocking like no one's business.
Liner Note Author: Joe Bonamassa.

| | Paul Butterfield Blues Band CD (1965)
Call Me music CDs
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, and the rhythm section, on loan from Howling Wolf, swings like mad. The only fly in the ointment is the fairly primitive production, which often makes Mark Naftalin's keyboards sound like a horde of angry bees, but that's a small criticism in the face of blues playing as passionate and accomplished as this. A genuine ...

| | Gary Moore Close As You Get CD (2007)
Call Me CD music
$11.49 On 2007's CLOSE AS YOU GET, Irish guitar hero Gary Moore offers up a wonderfully spare set of blues tunes. While the album features plenty of top-notch covers (see John Mayall's "Have You Heard" and Son House's "Sundown"), many of the finest moments are Moore's own songs--most notably, the smoky "Trouble at ...

| | Barrington Levy 20 Vintage Hits CD (1992)
Call Me songs
$9.79 So prolific was the young Barrington Levy, so high his profile, that 20 Vintage Hits only scratches the surface of his early successes. However, with Dennis "Blackbeard" Bovell playing selector, this is one sumptuous collection and one of the best bangs for your buck available. The singer cut his first single in 1977 and a steady stream followed, but it was only when he linked with up-and-coming producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes in 1979 that the teen's star exploded. Of course, the singer wasn't recording exclusively for Lawes; he was also notching up hits for a myriad of other producers, including Karl Pitterson, Alvin Ranglin, Linval Thompson, and George Phang, before joining forces with Jah Screw in 1984. However, this set concentrates on Levy's work with Lawes, all backed by the equally fresh Roots Radics, bundling up hits and sensational album tracks recorded between 1980-1983. "Shine Eye Girl," "Mary Long Tongue," "Prison Oval Rock," "Rob and Gone," "Moonlight Lover," "Reggae Music" -- the hits just kept spilling out of the studio. These were just some of the most popular; the album adds many more. To mix it up a bit, 20 Vintage Hits also includes three fabulous numbers cut for Linval Thompson, with "Words of Jah Jah" and "River Jordan" of particular note. Equally crucial is 1983's "Money Move," a smash for producer George Phang. Although the sequencing plays havoc with chronology, one can still hear the teen maturing, his voice lowering as the years pass. Levy was all of 15 in 1979, and as a simple guide compare "Looking My Love," the earliest cut here, with "Money Moves," one of the latest. But even in 1979, the singer's emotional range and the maturity of his delivery left listeners in awe. Besides showcasing Levy's impressive skills, this set equally throws a spotlight on the phenomenal Roots Radics, whose militant rhythms back all the songs on the set bar "Money Moves" (which came courtesy ...
