Smart, melodic, pop/punk/metal in the grand tradition, with stylistic nods to what seems like every genre practitioner, from Blink 182 to Cheap Trick to the early Who. The songs here are full of anthemic choruses, huge washes of guitar, and appealingly winsome singing by writer/guitarist Brendan Brown. Lyrically, there's a certain snot-nosed suburban teenage sensibility reminiscent of Weezer, and for those with long memories, even the first Dictators album, although Brown's mostly interested in wordplay.
Among the album's best numbers are the cheerfully hook-laden "Teenage Dirtbag" (which brings to two the number of puzzling references to Iron Maiden that appear here); "Love is a Mutt From Hell," a very funny he said-she said song with a glorious, soaring chorus; and the equally melodic "Hump 'Em N' Dump 'Em," which appears to be about a one-night stand gone horribly wrong (she eats his cat). Basically there's nothing here that isn't rewarding on some level. A great debut.
Wheatus: Brendan Brown (vocals, guitar); Rich Liegey (vocals, bass); Phillip A. Jimenez (harmonica, keyboards, percussion); Peter Brown (drums, percussion, background vocals).
Additional personnel: Pipi Longscratchings (scratches).
Rolling Stone (9/28/00, p.61) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...Straightforward fast-paced pop with rough thrash edges....proving that the snarky rock&roll nerd with more chops than the jocks was not just a mid-'90s phenomenon..." Q (3/01, p.113) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Brendan B Brown has a way with an endearing tale and his band's debut album lasts for 33 stodge-free minutes....The single 'Teenage Dirtbag' will be a huge hit..." Wheatus album
$7.75 From their earliest days, Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers had gloried in crossing over sounds and blending genres, shoving reggae into the pop world, then dragging it out to the discos. But now the group was swiftly outgrowing this teenybop phase, maturing into adults with more sophisticated tastes. Ziggy was no longer the main songwriter, as his siblings joined in, notably David, who composed many of the tracks on Jahmekya. The album has a much tougher sound than previous records, and its digitized beats are indebted to Jamaica's dancehalls. Stephen's growing interest in this scene is evident on "Raw Riddim," a pure dancehall number, stripped down to the beats. However, the other members of the group are pulling away from influences of their homeland toward the urban contemporary sounds pouring from the U.S. Much of Jahmekya explores this style, twining in funk, soul, and modern R&B into the group's mix. Of course there's still a sprinkling of reggae pop tracks and rootsy dance numbers, but it's clear that the group is moving beyond ...
| | Michael Nesmith Magnetic South/Loose Salute CD (2000)
Wheatus CD music
$11.19 MAGNETIC SOUTH is Michael Nesmith's first solo record after the break-up of the Monkees.
This European two-fer CD contains Michael "Papa Nez" Nesmith's first two post-Monkees recordings -- Magnetic South and Loose Salute -- as a member of the First National Band. Although the heavily orchestrated Wichita Train Whistle Sings (1968) is credited to Nesmith as a solo artist, it was technically released while he was still a Monkee. As a bonus for collectors, this single-disc anthology also includes the instrumental track "1st National Dance." As enthusiasts of post-Headquarters Monkees will assuredly attest, Nesmith's country & western-flavored material is not only the highlight of those albums, but arguably the only worthwhile tracks on them. During his tenuous final days as a pop idol, Nesmith took full advantage of the unique situation by recording his compositions outside of the Monkees pre-manufactured confines -- using his own musicians. Several of those tracks are revisited on these recordings. Among them, "Calico Girlfriend," "Nine Times Blue," "Little Red Rider," "Crippled Lion," "Hollywood," ...
| | Candi Staton CD (2004)
Wheatus music CDs
$14.35 A Southern soul legend to aficionados, but a relative unknown to just about everyone else, Candi Staton was given a serious re-examination via this self-titled anthology released on Astralwerks in 2004. At 26 tracks, the collection brings together nearly everything Staton recorded with Rick Hall at his legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, spanning the years 1967 to '73. Staton never garnered the same fame as other visitors to Hall's studio--Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett among them--but one listen to her strong, proud voice on "I'd Rather Be An Old Man's Sweetheart (Than A Young Man's Fool)" or the way her sultry Deep South lilt unfurls on "He Called Me Baby," ...
| | Kinks Sleepwalker CD (1977) Digipak; SACD Hybrid; Remastered
Wheatus songs
$13.89 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
The mid-to-late '70s were a time of immense change for The Kinks, both in musical styles and band personnel. On 1977's SLEEPWALKER, Ray Davies shed the complex arrangements of his earlier work of that decade and opted for a stripped-down quintet sound. Davies also simplified his songwriting style to accommodate more straight-ahead rock & roll.
SLEEPWALKER features the old-school Kinks signature tunes such as "Juke Box Music" and the eminently catchy title track. There are also a number of inspired slow-tempo numbers, including "Brother," a bittersweet ballad that stands up to any of Davies' best ...
| | Allen Toussaint Toussaint CD (1971)
Wheatus album
$11.49 Allen Toussaint's first solo album, from 1971, established the producer and songwriter's definitive musical style of easygoing, loping New Orleans grooves. Side one is all vocals, with the flip devoted to jazzy instrumental grooves including a remarkable version of Vince Guaraldi's signature tune, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind." Besides Toussaint's own version of his hit for Lee Dorsey, "Workin' In A Coal Mine," TOUSSAINT also includes his own signature tune, "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky." This reissue adds two more instrumentals, "Number Nine" and "Poor Folks."
As intimated by the cover art, this album is a close-up and personal portrait. Although the multi-talented hitmaker had become a living legend within the thriving musical community of his native Crescent City, Allen Toussaint more often than not deferred the spotlight to the vocalists for whom he wrote, produced, and arranged. Released in 1970, Allen Toussaint was only his second LP during a career that (at the time) had already outpaced practically all of his contemporaries. The ten songs on the original LP provided a launching pad for Toussaint ...

Wheatus CD music
$5.95 Digitally remastered by Greg Calbi (Sterling Sound Studio, New York, New York).
It's a testament to Muddy Waters's consistency of vision that the final chapter in his career was such a triumphant one. His last four albums, all produced by guitarist/acolyte Johnny Winter, were a ferocious return to form, boasting all the stark, primal power of his ...
