This second volume in Johnny Winter's self-produced Live Bootleg Series is in many ways superior to the first. The reason is simple: Winter relies far more on his electrifying -- sometimes just unbelievable -- guitar-slinging interpretation of the blues as it meets hard rock more than re-interpreting rock tunes for the blues. There are only six tunes here, only one of them under six minutes and the rest ranging from seven to 14 and change. There are absolutely amazing readings of Mose Allison's "Parchman Farm," Robert Johnson's "Crossroads," and Jimi Hendrix's "Red House." The last one is key, because here is one master playing the work of another without being overly reverential. Winter's own "Black Cat Bone" opens the set, and it stands tall with all the other canonical classics here. Like its predecessor, this volume has some small sound issues, but none to keep the listener from hearing the full force of this guitar attack. Just get this and ask questions later. ~ Thom Jurek

I probably have every one of Johnny Winter's albums/cassettes/CD's. This is THE best yet. Even though the songs are old, you just can't beat the talent he has.

Johnny at top form ! If you're a fan of electric blues you can't pass this one by . Amazing from start to finish .I can't wait for Volume 3 .

At first I was reluctant to get a Live Bootleg Series CD because it says the sound quality is not the best. Well, yeah, that is true, but this CD still kicks it out, and on the right set, sounds just fine, the main thing is you have to be able to boost the base, so earbuds are out, but headphones or a regular sterio are just fine. The guitar work on this cd is excellent--as always with Johnny. A must have CD for a solid Johnny Winter fan like me (I have 16 Johnny Winter CDS and 170 ter tunes--all Johnny Winter--on my MP3 player). My favorite on this CD is Parchman Farm. Now I am getting ready to buy Volume 4.

What does one arrive at by crossing old-time music with Django Reinhardt and jazz-grass? Well, basically a beautifully strange album like Pioneer Nights. Banjoist/12-string guitarist Dick Weissman and violinist/guitarist Gary Keiski team up in various combinations to play 18 originals that, genre-wise, defy category. "Mr. Banjeaurine Man" is a lovely banjo piece that lazily twists and turns toward no particular destination, while "Wolfgang's Banjo" glides along like a lullaby. The opening "Django's Dilemma," featuring banjo and fiddle, is one of the most intriguing, addicting pieces on the album. This is the type of instrumental that Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli would have played had they been born in Appalachia instead of Paris. Although known as a banjo player, Weissman's guitar work is equally impressive. There is a lovely, bossa nova-flavored piece titled "Breeze-il," and a dusty, Far East meets Wild West piece called "Superstition Mountain." His guitar work has an open quality that may remind some of John Fahey or the later work of Leo Kottke, but Weissman's compositions and phrasings are more distinct, more attention-grabbing. Critics often fall back on the old cliché of "this artist isn't as well-known as he should be," mostly due the frustration felt when a wonderful artist isn't given proper recognition. At least one can be thankful that labels like Wind River put artists like Weissman and Keiski in the studio and let ...
