"Time Flies" is an album of songs written by kids, for kids, about school. Blues singer/songwriter and recording artist, Ruth McGillivray, worked as Artist-in-Residence for a term at South Poplar Elementary to help the kids develop ideas, rhyming phrases and melodies for each song. Her goal was to come up with songs that were fun and melodic, yet sounded like they were written by and for kids in grades K to 5. It worked! Kids love these songs. They love that they were written and sung by real kids, with real, kid-like silly rhymes and lyrics. The songs are about something children can relate to in their everyday world--school--and they love to sing along. There's fun and humour in the songs, but also a strong message: daily life, technology, tools and the way we communicate may change over time, but the core values of respect, sharing, caring and family support stay the same. The project has gained a lot of attention in British Columbia, and is a featured education project of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Committee. About the songs:- Time Flies: Written by Ruth McGillivray as a theme song for the event, and performed by Ruth and the South Poplar Elementary choir.- History is a Mystery: Rock tune by Mrs. Ehrenreich's grade 3 class. It's about how daily life at school has changed over 75 years. - Recess Express: Rap tune by Mrs. Harrison's grade 2 class. It's about what kids love to do at recess.- Toys - What We Love Best of All: Swing tune by Mrs. Scott's kindergarten class, about all the favourite toys of 5-year olds.- Getting to School: Rock tune by Miss Darke's grade 1 class, about how the way kids get to school has changed over the years.- What Will They Think of Next?: Country tune by Miss Rooke's grade 4 class, about how technology has changed over 75 years.- Houses, Cars and Candy Bars: Swing tune by Mr. Stubbe's grade 5 class, about how the price of things has changed, but what we value has stayed the same.- Teachers Are School: Rap tune by Miss Gravel's grade 3 class about the kids favourite teachers, and what they'll do if they grow up to be teachers.- Sports Day: Upbeat disco tune by Mrs. Kylo's grade 2 class, about how the games we play on Sports Day have changed over the years, but the fun remains the same.- Summer Vacation: Beach-rock tune by Mrs. Priess' grade 1 class, about what kids love to about summer vacation.- There For You: Rock tune by Mrs. Huget & Mrs. Peters' grade 4 class about celebrations and family support over the school year.- Time Flies - Reprise: Repeat of the theme song, sung as the concert finale by Ruth McGillivray and the entire school on stage.How "Time Flies" Came To Be:South Poplar Traditional Elementary School in Abbotsford, B.C. Canada, celebrated their 75th year in 2008 and two of its teachers, Sharon Huget and Heather Preiss, wanted to mark the event with something special.They had the idea to bring in a singer/songwriter who would work with the kids to write songs about the school's history, perform those songs at a concert, record the performance and turn it into a CD. They pitched the idea to ArtStarts, a B.C. organization that offers programs to educators to promote arts and creativity in schools.
