The murky cover art on Intodown's Brave New World features images grafted onto other images, leaving a dreamlike landscape bathed in red. A face, looking like Lou Reed in his Velvet days, comes to the forefront, but even this face is vague, lost in the murk. There is an equally murky vocal near the beginning of the first cut, "Elevator," though the vocal, buried in the mix, is brief. What finally emerges in the eight-minute jam with the brief vocal, however, is more anxious than gloomy, reminding one of the early work of King Crimson. The title cut, a seven-minute instrumental featuring Michael Clark's guitar work, is equally imaginative. The backing arrangements are fairly simple, mostly bass-drums-guitar, though Intodown creates a full rock sound. The only downsides are vocal and spoken interjections. The abovementioned vocal on "Elevator" is mostly a distraction from an enjoyable jam, and the interjected spoken word parts in "Fire" (part of a Robert Frost poem) is distracting and borders on pretentious. The titles--"Revolution," "Revolution 2," and "Nostradamous"--are also a bit heavy handed, and like the spoken-sung parts, unnecessary. Simply put, the music on Brave New World works fine by itself, clearly sketching Clark's restless vision of the future (or perhaps of no future). ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Brave New World
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but ...

Brave New World
$17.75 If you take a listen to Nicole Byblow, you might think that Winnipeg singer/songwriter’s musical influences are more closely linked to Beethoven than The Beatles. But the 22-year-old pianist has the Fab Four to blame for tuning her ear to music.“I remember when I was really young, I said something about how I liked The Beatles,” Byblow recalls. “My dad turned to me and was like ‘how the hell do you know about the Beatles?”While it may not be stylistically evident on Unabashed, Byblow’s debut EP, that she was raised on a healthy diet of ‘60s counter-culture records, the pianist has ...

Brave New World
$21.49 'Good Clean Fun' CD review by Scott Free: Good Clean Fun is a pure queer romp - a celebration of gay life before it was called gay. When lube was duck fat, not silicone based, when sex was had in trailer parks and trucks stops, not through M4M or Manhunt. And to match his version of queer life, his musical direction is a fascinating combination of very traditional musical styles such as bluegrass, gut-bucket blues, and sailor songs. Call it country music, but this is Hank Williams country, not the modern industry-driven forms of today. And the music could not be queerer. "Good Old Boys" is a knee-slappin' tale of "guitar-pickin', boot-lickin', pill-poppin', pants-droppin' "….well there's more there, but you need to hear it for yourself! With lines like "his hands smell just like diesel fuel" ('Truck Stop'), and 'my wrists are sore from the handcuffs last night' ('Cruising'), this CD has plenty of songs to satisfy your big gay heart. As with the tradition of country music, there are many songs of love and loss. "I Want A Buddy" talks of the loss of a lover, and a straight man that becomes his substitute. 'Old Photograph' laments the loss of friend who dies from "guns and amphetamine". But 'Queer Cowboy Lament' is the saddest of all, a touching tale of loss and regret that closes the CD. Don can go also on the attack, as he does harshly with this 'Leather Arm Band Song', the target of which is today's ...
