SGX emerges from his slumber with "Hero of the Grey Area." This is the most focused, cohesive album focusing on instrumental pieces. SGX intersperses electro, breakbeat, and industrial beats between lush orchestrations, growling synth basses, and transporting soundscapes. "Hero" is at the same time electronic and synthetic plus natural and human. Unlike his previous albums such as "Chroma" and "Synesthetic," which feature a mixture of not only genres, but tones, "Hero of the Grey Area" exudes a more homogeneous tone and feeling while still exploring fusing ideas from many genres. This is music for listening and sometimes takes its time exploring an idea in the vein of BT's "This Binary Universe.""Hero of the Grey Area" features "A Meal for a Whale" - a track made with only a software sequencer/sampler, a piano, and the audio toy/game Electroplankton for the Nintendo DS as sound sources. SGX effects, samples, records, and manipulates his way through this at once lo-fi and lush recording creating tides of relaxed beauty and exuberance. Also featured is the four-movement "I Transmit This" - an exercise in re-use and modulation of interchangeable musical ideas. SGX begins with simple overlapping piano melodies that appear and re-appear in later parts of the piece as different instruments and ideas, inspiring new ideas. I Transmit This branches, grows new limbs, and finally returns to the main concepts which in the end bear the influences of the new ideas that were themselves inspired by the original concepts.

Lest you believe Little Dragon lack an aesthetic spine, their shift away from low-key left-field hip-hop, plaintive piano ballads, and acoustic jazz--a combination that helped make their debut a cult classic--seems more natural after a couple spins. There's no way around the fact that most of MACHINE DREAMS is icy electro-pop, but it is not as if the truly singular Yukimi Nagano, an enamoring vocalist, has switched to drone mode, forsaking her grounding in R&B. She has kind of perked up, in fact, with her hooks carrying more lift to suit her band's rubbery rhythms and liquid synthesizer patterns. Just as "Twice" was the standout on LITTLE DRAGON, the songs here that resonate ...

Indispensable global fusion music from Claus Zundel (AKA "The Brave"), this fifth outing (hence the title) finds the reclusive Spanish wizard stepping back and letting the virtuosic flamenco guitar of fellow Ibiza resident Paco Fernandez take center stage. Also on board is the African singer Luna Mohamed, who lends exotic vocal caresses to several tracks, and the mournful cello of Eric Plummetaz. As with previous B-Tribe work, the songs flow seamlessly together in a delirious blend of Gypsy camp romance and chill-out electronica. The centerpiece here is the haunting "Ode to Dolores Del Rio" which opens with a thunderously distorted bass string rumble before contrasting melancholy passages of wooden flute with effect-laden guitar and gentle chimes. "Anika" and "Angelic ...

Principally recorded at Ocean Groove Studios, Miami Beach, Florida and Mediterranneo Studios, San Jose, Ibiza from 1996-1997. The third album from the Barcelona Tribe of Soulsters (German producer Claus Zundel, or "The Brave") leaves its predecessors' predilection for German techno beats and English vocals far behind. Instead, the emphasis distinctly moves from the dance club to the bedroom, aided by Paco Fernandez's flamenco guitar. "Alegria" benefits from a slow, captivatingly steady beat that gently and unceasingly propels Fernandez's impassioned arpeggios and Arrantza Aida's wailing vocals. The title track marches steadily in the manner of Ravel's "Bolero" towards a climax just over the hill, and is in no particular hurry to get there (what lover would have it any other way?). "Tribute to J.S. Bach" expertly blends a dying flamenco guitar with mysterious, ominous synth noises to profoundly ...

Shirley Horn Travelin' Light CD  (1965)

Hero Of The Grey Area
CD $12.35  5 stars Audio Samples
Recorded in New York in 1965. Includes liner notes by James Gavin. This is a reissue of a rare early recording that the Washington, DC based Shirley Horn made in 1965 in New York City for ABC-Paramount. Though TRAVELIN' LIGHT received enthusiastic reviews at the time, it quickly went out of print. Unlike her earlier Mercury recordings, here Horn was permitted to spotlight her trio and accompany herself on piano. Her whispery, sultry, and smoky vocals are subtle and languid. Her phrasing is exquisitely intimate and conversational, relying on odd metered timing rather than volume to make an emotional point. Her masterly chord cluster piano style punctuates each vocal phrase. The song arrangements (mostly for a septet with some big band ...

'Good Clean Fun' CD review by Scott Free: Good Clean Fun is a pure queer romp - a celebration of gay life before it was called gay. When lube was duck fat, not silicone based, when sex was had in trailer parks and trucks stops, not through M4M or Manhunt. And to match his version of queer life, his musical direction is a fascinating combination of very traditional musical styles such as bluegrass, gut-bucket blues, and sailor songs. Call it country music, but this is Hank Williams country, not the modern industry-driven forms of today. And the music could not be queerer. "Good Old Boys" is a knee-slappin' tale of "guitar-pickin', boot-lickin', pill-poppin', pants-droppin' "….well there's more there, but you need to hear it for yourself! With lines like "his hands smell just like diesel fuel" ('Truck Stop'), and 'my wrists are sore from the handcuffs last night' ('Cruising'), this CD has plenty of songs to satisfy your big gay heart. As with the tradition of country music, there are many songs of love and loss. "I Want A Buddy" talks of the loss of a lover, and a straight man that becomes his substitute. 'Old Photograph' laments the loss of friend who dies from "guns and amphetamine". But 'Queer Cowboy Lament' is the saddest of all, a touching tale of loss and regret that closes the CD. Don can go also on the attack, as he does harshly with this 'Leather Arm Band Song', the target of which is today's gay male community. It's a blistering attack on gay male dress code, dick size obsession, and body image. It includes the line "You better be straight-acting, 'cause I'm a dude who only happens to be gay". The artwork Don has compiled for his CD is an amazing collection of vintage photographs – many taken from the early days of photography. Army and navy men carousing, skinny-dipping and taking baths (two to a tub), along with wrestlers, bodybuilders, and a shirtless chain gang fill up the lyric book. This collection could easily be displayed at an art gallery – what a treat ...
