B2K: Lil Fizz, Omarion, J-Boog, Raz-B. Producers include: The Underdogs, Troy Taylor, Charles Farrar, Platinum Status, Jermaine Dupri. Epic Records definitely did its homework before unleashing B2K into the pop market. The boy band of clean-cut and suave young black men is everything a marketing department dreams about: attractive teens-becoming-men who make the girls melt with a little bit of a rugged, tough-guy attitude and flashy clothes. Of course, there are also the dance beats that are as much dance-pop as hip-hop; in fact, you might even wager a bet that the many producers and songwriters on this album had been listening to a bit of Craig David and other British 2-step pop stars. Plus, the group members are capable singers as well, which is another bonus. Overall, with the girl-magnet looks, the trendy radio-ready production, and the limitless vocal hooks, Epic Records has all the makings of pop stardom in B2K, including a market-testing hit single in "Uh Huh" that set the stage for the group's debut album. B2K, a self-titled album, gets off to a good start, jumping right into some of its best songs -- "Gots ta Be," "Understanding," and "Why I Love You" -- before unleashing the album highlight, the aforementioned "Uh Huh." From there, the album gets progressively long-winded, running through 17 songs in total, none of them overly distinct. Of course, that's the nature of pop albums, particularly boy band albums, and B2K definitely follows in the grand tradition of its predecessors: Jagged Edge, Dru Hill, Blackstreet, and Bell Biv Devoe. ~ Jason Birchmeier Now these guys are smooth. Though the four lads who make up B2K may not look old enough to shave, they've already got their mack daddy rap down cold, and for a romantic R&B group, that's a crucial point. From a purely sonic viewpoint, they set the stage for seduction perfectly with rhythms that strike just the right balance between sensuality and gentle prodding, and lush, sparkling guitar and keyboard splashes. Thematically, they really bring the game home; letting girls know what they need on "Understanding," letting them know that B2K knows what women want on "Gots Ta Be," and even going so far as to include such ultra-confident fare as the very self-explanatory "B2K is Hot." Did we mention that the band's official website is called B2Klovesyou.com? Parents, lock up your daughters, B2K has arrived.Q (8/02, p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...A tried-and-tested yet dextrous formula of soul/R&B stylings, glutinous harmonies and cloying sentimentality...done with relative sensativity and suss..." Striking while the iron is hot, B2K has been very busy in 2002, and Pandemonium! is the group's fourth album release of the year, following their self-titled debut, a remix collection, and a holiday EP. The quartet is pictured on the cover, decked out in stylish black leather outfits, with the outstretched hands of fans reaching up to crotch level, which says a lot. Their fast rise to the top of the pop heap is also attested to by the advance single "Bump, Bump, Bump," which was produced, written, and arranged by R. Kelly and which is co-billed to rapper P. Diddy. The ...

Photographers: Shareif Ziyadat; The Brothers Strauss. Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). As pleasing as these final numbers ...
| | Melanie Fiona Bridge CD (2009)
B2K
$8.79 Melanie Fiona's debut single, "Give It to Me Right," was a perfect 2009 pop-R&B recording. The single coupled a timeless classic (the Zombies' "Time of the Season") with roof-raising vocals and infectious pop hooks that stuck like peanut butter. Fiona's single was perfect, albeit a touch formulaic. Because of this, it's no surprise that a large chunk of her debut album, THE BRIDGE, is much of the same. Like any good 2009 pop-soul recording, the album offers influences from decades of soul music. Fiona, a Kanye West protégé, collaborates with about as many styles of music as she has producers and writers, who include most prominently Canadian R&B singer-songwriter Andrea Martin, Rob Fusari, Peter Wade Keusch, Sidh Solanki, Vada Nobles, Bill Blast, Future Cut, Stereotypes, Dan Strong, JK, Jay Fenix, and Affiliate. This mash-up of masterminds is a good thing; it offers the listener generous portions of put-together pop songs which color outside the lines in terms of genre. THE BRIDGE is the perfect launching pad for a solid career where she can further explore her possibilities as an artist, seeing as she appeals to the masses as well as the critics. Melanie Fiona's debut single, "Give It to ...

| | Charlie Wilson Uncle Charlie CD (2008)
B2K
$10.65 Audio Remasterer: Herb Powers. As the lead singer for the Gap Band and the man behind such classics as "Steppin' Out" and "I Don't Believe You Wanna Get Up and Dance (Oops, Up Side Your Head)," Charlie Wilson has had as great an influence on the development of modern R&B as legends like George Clinton and Roger Troutman. Unlike those artists, Charlie Wilson is still capable of producing astonishingly vibrant and contemporary sounding records. UNCLE CHARLIE is every bit the worthy successor to 2005's career revitalizing FIRST NAME CHARLIE, LAST NAME WILSON. It features contributions from Babyface, T-Pain, Snoop Dogg, and a host of other estimable collaborators. Keeping a good thing going, Uncle Charlie follows the formula of the former Gap Band vocalist's previous release, Charlie, Last Name Wilson, which climbed to number ten on Billboard's album chart. First, there's the return of Wilson's biggest advocate, Snoop Dogg, on the uptempo two-stepper "Let It Out." Then there's the return of T-Pain as producer ...
| | Peter Tosh Premium Gold Collection CD (1997) Import
B2K
$10.49 How "premium" can a Peter Tosh collection be when it totally ignores the likes of "Get Up, Stand Up," "Equal Rights," and "Stepping Razor"? One look down the track list of this compilation, and it's immediately evident that what Premium Gold Collection is offering up is yet another trawl through the five studio sets that comprised Peter Tosh's post-Virgin career, and thus, for the uninitiated, omitting anything off of the former Wailer's masterful Legalize It or Equal Rights ...

B2K
$11.65 The B-52s: Keith Strickland, Kate Pierson (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Fred Schneider (vocals, percussion); Cindy Wilson (vocals). Additional personnel: Nile Rodgers (guitar); Tommy Mandell, Philippe Saisse, Richard Hilton (keyboards); Sara Lee (bass, background vocals); Steve Ferrone, Sonny Emory, Charlie Drayton, Leroy Clouden (drums). The Uptown Horns: Chris Cioe, Paul Literal, Arno Hecht, Bob Funk, Carl Beatty. Many observers were prepared to write off the B-52's after the release of Bouncing Off the Satellites. Granted, the album was completed in the wake of Ricky Wilson's death, but the group appeared bereft of new musical ideas and were sounding rather stale. In other words, the last thing anyone expected was a first-class return to form, which is what they got with Cosmic Thing. Working with producers Don Was and Nile Rodgers, the B-52's updated their sound with shiny new surfaces and deep, funky grooves -- it was the same basic pattern as before, only refurbished and contemporized. Just as importantly, they had their best set of songs since at least Wild Planet, possibly since their debut. "Cosmic Thing" and "Channel Z" were great up-tempo rockers; "Roam" had a groovy beat blessed with a great Cindy Wilson vocal; and "Deadbeat Club" was one of their rare successful reflective numbers. Then there was "Love Shack," an irresistible dance number with delightfully silly lyrics and hooks as big as a whale that unbelievably gave the group a long-awaited Top Ten hit. The thing is, Cosmic Thing would already have been considered a triumphant return without its commercial success. The big sales were just the icing on the cake. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine 1986's BOUNCING OFF THE SATELLITES found the B-52s in the throes of mourning (they'd lost guitarist Ricky Wilson). But they returned in 1989 with COSMIC THING, a corker that set up the band for '90s success. This is a glorious party of a collection and an album ...
| | Angelic Psychic Medium Spasoff Were So Loved CD (2009)
B2K
$15.89 For twenty five years, I have been a therapist to the underground of society. Wandering the concrete jungle, meeting with prostitutes, strippers, homeless and the criminal organization known as the Mafia, my work has been wide range and has touched many lives some of my experiences I’ve been through and how you can benefit yourself from life’s hardships. Angels speak to all of us. You just have to learn to listen. How do you listen? You need to quiet your body down and use your sixth sense. Maybe, life is too hectic for you. Hard job, demanding boss, small children and a dog named Beethoven sometimes make it difficult for us to slow down. In my talks , I would like to share some of these messages about love, faith, hope and healing. What Dying is like,What does a soul look like,What Heaven is like, My own experience with God and our Angels. My life has always been one that has unfolded out in front of me, creating a path of faith for me to follow in God’s ultimate arrangement of my life. I never knew where my angels would lead me, but I had some ides of what I was suppose to do. I was put on this earth to help many types of people in need. Most of my life was shrouded in darkness. Sex, drugs, murder and mayhem were spread out in front of me like a Las Vegas 2.99 buffet of all you would want to consume. To me this situation was living. As my friend Don Adams would say (from “Get Smart”), “and loving every minute of it.” Don’t misunderstand me; I wasn’t involved with this activity. In fact, this activity scared me to death, but at the same time scared the life into me. It kept me alive; giving me a calling to live. My vocation, my passion was in helping people. I was there to help, to pray and to calm down people during their time of crisis. Even though, I was walking in dangerous company, I felt protected by my angels. I felt that I was always guided to the people I needed to be ...
