As the offspring of 1960s California pop royalty (Beach Boy Brian Wilson, Mamas & Papas' John and Michelle Phillips), female vocal trio Wilson Phillips seems uniquely qualified to turn out a comeback album (after 12 years of silence) featuring covers of L.A.-centric hits from the '60s and '70s. Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good" is ripe for revival, and here it gets a bit of a pumped-up Britney Spears-style treatment. Neil Young's "Old Man" is also the recipient of techno-friendly modernization. The trio's take on the Eagles' "Already Gone" sounds like a natural fit for contemporary-country radio.
Unsurprisingly, the most faithful renditions are the strongest--Joni Mitchell's title cut and the Youngbloods' pacific anthem "Get Together." The girls dig into the catalogs of their parents too, for a "Monday, Monday" that owes more to Sheryl Crow than to the Mamas & the Papas, and a zesty romp through the Beach Boys' "Dance, Dance, Dance." The most affecting moment on CALIFORNIA, though, is the closing track, where Brian Wilson joins his daughters and their pal for a piano-and-vocal version of his classic "In My Room."

California album
$9.69 After making a comeback in 1981, the revamped 1980s version of Grand Funk Railroad took one last stab at the '80s rock market with What's Funk? This time, the band enlisted Gary Lyons (producer for Foreigner and the Outlaws) to create an updated version of the kind of slickly produced album that made the group into a pop hitmaker during the mid-'70s. The end result is an improvement over 1981's underproduced Grand Funk Lives, but it still suffers from some uneven moments. Lyons adds plenty of early-'80s frills to the group sound, the most notable examples being the synthesizers and drum machines that dress up tunes like "Innocent" and "I'm So True." This approach doesn't always work (the Gary Numan-like programmed synthesizers that underpin "Borderline" clutter up what could have been an effective slice of guitar-driven hard ...
| | Grand Funk Railroad Grand Funk Lives CD (1981)
California CD music
$9.69 Rising like a Phoenix, which was the title of one of their previous albums, perhaps Mark Farner is sending a subliminal message with opening track "Good Times" that his "Bad Time" is over? The song "Testify," track three, sums up this very good album from Mark Farner, Don Brewer, and bassist Dennis Bellinger replacing the MIA Mel Schacher. It's a hooky rock tune with Farner's religious overtones. All these tracks are strong, from "Can't Be With You Tonight" to the glorious ending of "Wait for Me." The no-nonsense production of manager Andrew Cavaliere -- shades of Terry Knight! --- and Bob Destocki, lets Farner and Brewer shine. This album is like a subdued version of the Grand Funk classic Survival. In fact, both Survival and Grand Funk Lives are underrated, not just among Grand Funk fans. Where the first Mark Farner solo album, produced by Dick Wagner, had more of a bluesy feel in 1977, and 1978's Flint by Brewer and company sounded like a stab in the dark, this collection rocks. "Queen Bee" has riffs taken from Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep, specifically the ending of the song; "Black Sabbath meets Heep's "Easy Livin'," with Farner's pop influences glossing it up. "We Gotta Get out of This Place" has more in common with a hard-rocking ...
| | Glee Cast Glee: The Music, Vol. 2 CD (2009) Original Soundtrack
California music CDs
$9.58 The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, though; Morrison delivers one of the album's most inventive songs with a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Young Girl," while Michele sings the absolute pants off of everything the producers give her. The album sometimes strays away from choral arrangements and focuses on individual ...

| | Gov't Mule By A Thread CD (2009)
California album
$11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. ...

| | Music Of The Rain Forest Pygmies CD (1992) (Import)
California music CDs
$13.85 This CD contains a wide range of recordings by peoples living in the the Ituri Forest (the Lese and Mbutu) of Zaire. These recordings were made by Colin Turnbull in the late 50s and early 60s, and have achieved a classic status among fans of traditional musics.
For many fans of African music, this politely packaged album was the very first sonic glimpse of the musical world of several different pygmy tribes. Few people would not admit to some sort of fascination with these miniature people of the Congo. And even in these highly edited, practically miniaturized bits, their musical world is endlessly fascinating. If the phrase "those pygmies blow everybody away!" was overheard in a conversation, no doubt the subject would be pygmy music. In a continent of music that routinely leaves listeners speechless, count on the Mbuti, Lese, Bera, and Nyari peoples for musical brilliance that often comes about as a routine part of someone's day, rather than as the result of hundreds of hours of study and practice at Juilliard. The trouble with this Lyrichord production is that better collections of pygmy music were to follow, especially recordings with a clearer, more expansive sonic quality. However, this type of music is not exactly over-recorded, so there are plenty of reasons to have a complete collection. This collection was put together by the renowned ethnologist Colin Turnbull, and he puts the best foot forward by starting the first side out with "Elephant Hunting Song." This may be all a listener needs to become positively intoxicated with pygmy music. The sound of thunder in the distance at the end of the track underscores the delight of these types of field recordings: One is instantly transported to the Congo, without ever having to consult a travel agent. Listeners hear girls singing about their boyfriends and giggling, showing that the pygmies have their own variations on Connie Francis and/or Britney Spears. The five-string ...
