| | Susan Tedeschi Back To The River CD (2008)
Regroup music CDs
$11.99 While its predecessor, 2005's HOPE AND DESIRE, found blues-rocker Susan Tedeschi getting on a soul train, BACK TO THE RIVER represents that phrase beloved by hardcore fans of any artist, "a return to form." Tedeschi is back to the hard-hitting, bluesy sound with which she made her name, and her joy at this stylistic homecoming is clearly audible; you can hear it both in the throaty abandon of her vocals and in the unfettered fury with which she digs into her guitar solos. While there's still a soul flavor present in some of the tracks ...
| | Johnny Winter: The Woodstock Experience CDs (1969) Limited Edition
Regroup songs
$15.95 Also available in a 3-pack with SECOND WINTER and CAPTURED LIVE.
Among white blues singers of the 1960s, there were some who studied the music so intently they amazed even the genre's creators with their technical mastery. A select few, however, seemed to be born oozing authenticity, sounding just as soulful as the greatest black bluesmen while forging a completely new sound. Johnny Winter belonged in the second category. A long-haired hippie albino, he astounded initially skeptical listeners with his Howlin' Wolf-like vocals and wild Johnny Guitar Watson-esque guitar stylings. THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE showcases Winter's first taste of national exposure, first with his 1969 self-titled debut album, and then with his set at the Woodstock festival later the same year. The latter recording is the revelation here--a tornado of raging slide guitar and shouted vocals that sounds as if a late night Lone Star State roadhouse gig has been magically transported to the upstate New York farm. With several tracks clocking in at over 10 minutes ("Mean Town Blues," a hellacious ...

| | Allen Toussaint The Bright Mississippi CD (2009)
Regroup CD music
$15.65 Fans of legendary New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint may at first be surprised that, for his first album in over a decade, the producer, songwriter, and pianist would choose to forgo recording his own stellar material in favor of a collection of cover tunes. The songs here aren't just any songs, however, but a rich selection of Big Easy standards, as interpreted by one of the city's most gifted musical sons. The resulting Joe Henry-produced gumbo draws upon all of Toussaint's myriad musical ...

| | Spirit Caravan Dreamwheel CD (1999)
Regroup songs
$8.09 As undeniably powerful, durable, and straight-shooting as Motorhead's Lemmy Kilminster, Spirit Caravan's inveterate founder and leader, Scott "Wino" Weinrich, is an absolute rock lifer. Following on the heels of the band's debut, Jug Fulla Sun, Dreamwheel is a Spartan-sounding five-song EP, the perfect compliment to the dense, doom-laden psychedelia of the full-length. In fact, Dreamwheel's greatest strength is the breathing space between notes, provided by the rock solid rhythm section of drummer Gary Isom and bassist Dave Sherman. Such rhythmic austerity -- the kind championed by the effort of bands like Free, Bad Company, Led Zeppelin, and Grand Funk Railroad -- allows ...
| | Big Maybelle Complete Okeh Sessions 1952-1955 CD (1994)
Regroup album
$5.95 There's very little that's subtle about the room-shaking music of Big Maybelle. Decades later, the power in these 26 tracks is still palpable. With her bold, gritty sound, she comes off like nothing so much as a female Howlin' Wolf, and one can't imagine her not being an influence on the full-throttle blues of Janis Joplin. "So Good to My Baby" features typically microphone-distorting belting from the singer, and an appropriately blazing horn section. The hit "Gabbin' Blues (Don't Run My Business)" is a humorous tete-a-tete between Smith and a scorned female cohort. It recalls similar devices frequently employed in late-'90s R&B.
One of the most stirring cuts here is "Ocean of Tears," a percolating, minor-key tune in which Maybelle bemoans her sorrowful state with an unforgettably cathartic angst. Also impressive, though, are ballads such as "You'll Never Know," "Ain't No Use," and "You'll Be Sorry," which show a pleasant, softer side to Maybelle's craft. "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," which she took to the top of the R&B charts before Jerry Lee Lewis turned the song into a ...
