| | Michael Nesmith Tropical Campfires CD Michael Nesmith Discography of CDs
2008 reissue of this album from the former Monkee and groundbreaking music/video pioneer. Tropical Campfires is an entirely acoustic album with some of this country's best session players (including John Jorgensen of The Desert Rose Band, percussionist Luis Conte, and pedal steel player Red Rhodes). Nez sings some original tunes as well as covers of 'In the Still of the Night', 'Brazil', and 'Begin the Beguine'. After this recording many of the songs were performed with the same band for Live at the Britt, a festival which was videotaped in Oregon. Tropical Campfires album
$8.99 After a tepid solo debut, Lou Reed's post-Velvet Underground standing looked dicey. Fortunately, David Bowie and his guitarist Mick Ronson stepped in to help Reed craft one of the best albums of his career. TRANSFORMER built on the stripped-down, quirky pop of LOADED-era VU, infusing it with the androgynous, cheeky glitz of the glam era (the bleached-out black-and-white cover photo of Reed in eye makeup is a giveaway), not to mention a fair bit of Ronson's guitar muscle. Much to everyone's credit, however, the album's stylish flair never eclipses Reed's excellent songcraft or acerbic wit. [paragraph here] TRANSFORMER's sense of chic fun is infectious, and is heightened by Reed's character sketches of Andy Warhol's entourage and the glitterati of New York. "New York Telephone Conversation" demonstrates his biting satire, as do "Hangin' Round," a Ronson-assisted rocker, and "Goodnight Ladies," a music hall send-up. But TRANSFORMER's highlights are some of Reed's best-ever songs: the soaring ditty "Satellite ...
| | Michael Nesmith Witchita Train Whistle Sings / Timerider Ost CDs (2008)
Tropical Campfires CD music
$13.35 This two-fer on the U.K-based Edsel imprint contains a pair of Michael Nesmith's most diverse non-pop music projects. The Wichita Train Whistle Sings is the artist's 1968 solo debut LP, in which he put together a star-studded 52-piece ensemble of studio musicians to perform ten big-band orchestral arrangements of his own compositions. Timerider, from 1982, is the motion picture soundtrack recording to the film of the same name, which Nesmith not only scored but also co-wrote and acted in, albeit as an uncredited extra. Although both titles had been issued on CD before, Nesmith took the time to personally remaster each and provide an essay for the package. In terms of audio fidelity, The Wichita Train Whistle Sings sounds better than all previous incarnations thanks to the recovery ...

Tropical Campfires album
$16.95 The Prison (1974) is a brilliant multimedia concept marrying the personal and inner visual experience of Michael "Papa Nez" Nesmith's novella with the aural medium of an equally original soundtrack. Earliest pressings came housed in a 12" by 12" box set. The short story was presented in an LP-sized booklet with the music featured on the respective A and B sides of a single long-player. As opposed to much of his previous recordings, Nesmith's approach is decidedly more ethereal as the songs drift and dance one into the other with purpose and subjective intent. While Nez's prose as well as the songs' overall lyrical content are not inextricably linked, they aptly balance the respective chapters that correspond to each of the LP sides. The music is a definite departure from the straight-ahead country-rock leanings that Nesmith had exhibited with his First and Second National Bands. Even the copious contributions of David Kempton's ARP synthesizer and the metronome-esque Roland ...
| | Michael Nesmith Garden CD (1994)
Tropical Campfires CD music
$16.95 THE GARDEN is the second part of Michael Nesmith's music/book series which began in 1974 with THE PRISON. The book is enclosed within the double CD jewel box. Cassette consumers will have to send in for THE GARDEN book from Pacific Arts. THE GARDEN is also available on CD-ROM on Rio [94247 2011].
THE GARDEN was nominated for Best New Age Album in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
The Garden (1994) is Michael Nesmith's companion release to The Prison (1974). Both works are a departure from his more traditional releases, as the music is specifically designed to aurally complement an equally engaging written novella/short story -- included in the extended liner notes booklet. The idea is for consumers to commence reading Nesmith's prose while simultaneously listening to the recording. The concept may at first seem unusual, although the results are nothing short of profound. No special speed-reading skills are required. Rather, the most useful thing that a potential enthusiast can bring ...
