(2 Customer Reviews)
Fronted by photogenic singer Natalie Horler, the German trio Cascada presents a catchy set of dance-pop songs on its debut outing, PERFECT DAY. Marked by pounding beats, epic-sounding synths, and exuberant vocals, these tracks are club tunes primed for mainstream success, as evinced by the driving hit single "What Hurts the Most."
Cascada: Natalie Horler (vocals); Yann Peifer, Manuel Reuter.

| | Very Best Of Burt Bacharach CD (2001)
Perfect Day CD music
$7.95 A handy single-disc consolidation of the three-disc box set THE LOOK OF LOVE, THE VERY BEST OF BURT BACHARACH drops the rarities and oddities for a 16-track blast of nothing but the biggest hits, over a third of which are sung by Bacharach and Hal David's premier vocal partner, Dionne Warwick. Other singers include Gene Pitney, the Shirelles, Dusty Springfield, and Christopher Cross, all of them performing some of the finest songs of their careers. Best of all for the most easy-listening-averse fans--none of the songs come from Bacharach's 1960s and '70s albums for A&M Records, on which it's made clear that the best songwriters are not always the best singers. Only the lack of Warwick's "Promises, Promises," perhaps the trio's most exemplary work together, keeps THE VERY BEST OF BURT BACHARACH from being perfect.
Includes liner notes by Patrick Milligan & Alec Cumming.
Digitally remastered by Andrew Garver & Bill Inglot.
Audio Remasterers: Andrew Garver; Bill Inglot.
Arrangers: Larry Wilcox; Bob Alcivar; Bill Holman; Bones Howe; Burt Bacharach; Carole Bayer Sager.
| | Best Tango Album In The World, Ever! CDs (2003)
Perfect Day music CDs
$12.39 The title of this television-advertised compilation may be arrogant, but then the tango is not a dance for the shy and retiring. Whether or not it is, as it claims, The Best Tango Album in the World, Ever!, the two-disc set, containing 30 tracks and running a little less than an hour and a half, does feature some major performers of the music, notably Carlos Gardel, renowned as the father of the tango, heard performing "Volver" and the concluding vocal version of "Mi Buenos Aires Querido," and Astor Piazzolla, who used the tango as a vehicle for composing modern classical music, heard performing "La Rayuela." Other notable performers include Carlos Garcia & His Orchestra, heard on four tracks, Sexteto Mayor, Florindo Sassone & His Traditional Orchestra, and Alfredo de Angelis & His Traditional Orchestra. (If the casual listener to whom this collection is intended recognizes the third track, "Por una Cabeza," that's because it has turned up in the film Scent of a Woman, as the music to which Al Pacino's blind character dances, as well as in the opening scene of the Arnold Schwarzenegger film True Lies.) This is not a scholarly collection, being devoid of annotations beyond the requisite song titles, artists, and songwriting credits. But it plays well, and beginning students of the tango can put it on for their practice sessions. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Imogen Heap Speak For Yourself CD (2005)
Perfect Day songs
$6.25 Although it took Imogen Heap seven years to follow up her solo debut with 2005's SPEAK FOR YOURSELF, the British vocalist was far from idle during the interim, having formed Frou Frou with producer Guy Sigsworth (Bjork, Seal). While her second album mines a vein similar to Frou Frou's electronica/pop hybrid, it also carries a more sweeping and dynamic singer/songwriter aesthetic. The disc's most notable track is "Hide and Seek," a nearly a cappella tune that was prominently featured on the popular teen drama THE O.C., and presents Heap's bold-yet-breathy vocals lounging on a bed of electronic effects. Other highlights include the glitchy, chiming "Goodnight and Go" and the urgent "Clear the Area," both of which exemplify this assured and intriguing record.
| | Cascada Everytime We Touch CD (2006)
Perfect Day album
$15.65 Cascada's 2006 release EVERYTIME WE TOUCH delivers more of the artist's clubby electronic pop, which combines elements of disco, house, and straightforward commercial pop. The insistent, thumping tracks that back Cascada's sweet vocals wouldn't be out of place on the playlist of any mid-2000s DJ, but it's the blonde bombshell's hooky refrains that really make these tunes stick. This comes recommended to those who have enjoyed the recent work of Madonna and Cher.
| | Tricolor Mirth + Feckless CD (1999)
Perfect Day CD music
$10.22 In the early '90s, the short-lived instrumental group the Coctails created an intriguing blend of easy listening pop and avant-rock. The Chicago trio, Tricolor, are undoubtedly familiar with the Coctails' work -- guitarist Jeff Parker, a member of both AACM and Tortoise, is part of the same general school of musicians that has infiltrated every level of the Chicago post-rock scene -- and although they don't sound that much like the Coctails, a similar aesthetic seems to be at play. Parker, drummer David Pavkovic, and bassist Tatsu Aoki have a similarly playful feel to their music, and a clear fondness for the likes of Creed Taylor's late-'60s work (the bossa nova-tinged "Seven," sounds like a tribute to Taylor's late-period albums with Wes Montgomery), and the occasionally twee moments of the West Coast cool school. Not at all a visionary or exploratory record -- and anyone looking for the wilder free improv side of Atavistic had best look elsewhere -- Mirth + Feckless is coolly entertaining, effortlessly melodic pop-jazz, with just enough spikiness to stay out of the easy listening bins. ~ Stewart Mason
