With a title suggesting that it will be a movie concerning an attempt to break the land speed record, Bonneville is instead a domestic drama about a middle-aged widow on a road trip across the American West (in a mid-1960's circa Pontiac Bonneville car) with two female friends to spread the ashes of her husband. The soundtrack album is split between eight songs used as source music and seven cues from Jeff Cardoni's score. The songs are a miscellaneous selection of old (Donovan) and new (Amos Lee, Pete Droge) folkies, plus some Latin-tinged material, and, oddly, a version of "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" by Lazlo Bane that copies the hit version by Three Dog Night. (Maybe the original was too pricey?) Cardoni's score seems to have been intended to accompany the poignant moments in the film. The music plays at slow or deliberate tempos. Sustained strings (or string-like synthesized sounds) dominate, with plucked guitar and single-note piano playing, heavily echoed. ~ William Ruhlmann
Personnel: Gary Pine (vocals); Tom Naïm (guitar); Bob Sinclar (programming).

$6.09 The title Heavy Metal is somewhat misleading. Sure, this terrific soundtrack from the 1981 animated cult favorite features heavy metal and hard rock numbers. But the title refers to National Lampoon's sci-fi/fantasy magazine on which the film is based. Musically, Heavy Metal offers more than the title suggests, and the songs fit perfectly with their respective film segments. Heavy Metal was originally a double album, but at 62 minutes it fits just fine on one CD. Sixteen songs are contributed by Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Devo, Donald Fagen, Don Felder, Grand Funk Railroad, Sammy Hagar, Journey, ...

Bonneville Soundtrack CD music
$9.65 Maurice Jarre wrote the central musical motif of his score for Doctor Zhivago, "Lara's Theme," in a few minutes in a hotel, amid a frantic five-week rush to score the 197-minute movie. That theme made the Doctor Zhivago soundtrack album one of the biggest selling soundtrack of the 1960s, a considerable feat when one reckons in the competition from A Hard Day's Night, Never on Sunday, A Man and a Woman, Exodus, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The rest of Jarre's score is more in the realm of lushly textured Russian-themed mood music, filled with dark male choruses, folk and folk-like themes, ...
