On 1989's AUTOMATIC, the Jesus & Mary Chain take the pop-tinged sound of DARKLANDS, and roughen up the edges with a slight industrial tinge. Though it's certainly not a complete return to the ferocity of PSYCHOCANDY, the album does feature a number of revved-up classics by the revered Scottish duo, most notably the razor-sharp "Blues from a Gun," the surging "U.V. Ray," and the gloriously hard-charging "Head On" (covered by the Pixies only two years later). Like its predecessor, AUTOMATIC once again finds singer/guitarists Jim and William Reid joined by a drum machine, resulting in a calculated and clipped aesthetic that perfectly echoes the record's title. Though it's not one of Jesus & Mary Chain's most consistent albums, it features several undeniably great moments.

$19.69 Although generally not as highly regarded by the critics as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, or the Who, the Kinks may well have influenced far more musicians. The three-chord sledgehammer proto-metal burst of teenage lust called "You Really Got Me," the Kinks' third single and first hit, touched off a garage band explosion, which in turn influenced the rise of punk a ...

Automatic music CDs
$10.39 Since 1985, Glasgow brothers William and Jim Reid (aka The Jesus & Mary Chain) have immersed themselves in a wash of pop references as akin to Lou Reed's TRANSFORMER as to the Beach Boys' earliest singles. While more subdued, and painted in acoustic strokes, Jesus & Mary Chain's newest effort STONED & DETHRONED continues the band's mutation of pop's melodic sense.
STONED & DETHRONED is a step in a new direction for the Reids. Much of their early material seemed like a mixture of conflicting eras, bubblegum harmonies layered on top of impossible distorted guitar. Now with STONED & DETHRONED, The Jesus & Mary Chain have honed their erratic opposing sides into a cleaner, ...

Automatic music CDs
$15.89 This two-disc anthology from a British band that never truly got its just rewards is full of reflective, atmospheric, and at times lush arrangements. And it begins with a fine rendition of Nick Drake's "Pink Moon," featuring lead singer Tim Bowness accompanied by the smart, hushed tones created by multi-instrumentalist Steven Wilson. From there things pick up with the groovy trip-hop of "Colours," a cover of one of Donovan's hits that has touches of hip-hop, gospel, and ambient all blended into one. Think of Primitive Radio Gods rising above expectations and you might get a semblance of what's going on. The rich sonic landscapes make this album shine, often bringing to mind Moby supplying the music for Bryan Ferry or Depeche Mode's David Gahan. Some tracks take a tad longer to gel, including the funky bassline propelling the jazzy, almost improvisational, and midtempo "Walker," while others such as "Back to the Burning Shed" are reflective, instrumental interludes. Perhaps the highlight of the first disc is the mellow, sullen, and melancholic "Road," which glides along effortlessly. Another gem is the tender and bittersweet "Things Change." Complementing these songs are longer pieces such as the pretty Seal-meets-Savage Garden feel to "Housekeeping." Fans of Enigma would lap up the rather ethereal-cum-funky layers of the winding "Heaven Taste," a song that also initially brings to mind Pink Floyd's "Marooned" and one that never sags or falters for over ten ...

| | Joe Cefalu Fear Itself CD (2008)
Automatic album
$16.45 Guitarist Joe Cefalu composed and recorded Fear Itself drawing on the influences of the guitar heroes of his formative years. “The playing styles of guitarists like David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Brian May, Hendrix and Jimmy Page speak to me most loudly”, says Joe. “Through the years, as you develop as a musician, different players and the music they make have an impact on your approach. You can’t help but be affected by different bands and guitar players and even by different musical “fads” that come in and out of fashion through the years. However, when the smoke clears, for me, it still comes down to those classic guitarists who play from their hearts and whose styles are defined by emotive and soulful playing, rather than sheer technique alone”, explains Cefalu.Joe recorded the tunes on Fear Itself as they were composed, without any preconceived ...

| | Gene Watson Reflections/Should I Come Home? CD (2009) (Import) United Kingdom
Automatic music CDs
$16.99 This two-fer, compiling Gene Watson's Reflections (1978) and Should I Come Home (1979), is the third entry in Hux Records' reissue project form his Capitol period. 2002 saw the debut CD release of Love in the Hot Afternoon and Paper Rosie, and in 2005 they issued Because You Believed in Me, and Beautiful Country.
Watson was a serious chart contender throughout the middle and late '70s (he scored 17 charting singles in five years) and well into the '80s -- he even scored a couple of chart hits in the '90s. These last two recordings from the Capitol years are rooted at the seam split between classic country ballads, honky tonk, and the emerging urban cowboy sound without losing any of their hard-earned Nashville cred. Watson is a singer who can swagger and croon with acuity and authenticity. His songs contain worlds of emotion, both simple and complex. Check the contrast between the beautiful ballad "One Sided Conversation" and the rocked-up two stepper "Take off Them Shoes," the first two tracks on Reflections. It's in the grain of Watson's voice that we hear the man faced with the daunting task of everyday life, and his willingness to surrender what is necessary and fight for what is good and true -- and all this in a voice that is as smooth as blended bourbon. It's true that Watson is best known for his ballads, and that reputation is well earned. But it's in the complexity of the material he relates that his true gifts as a singer are revealed to the listener. Check "Pick the Wildwood Flower," where you can hear the restless road spirit of Merle Haggard calling out over the wilderness, or the languid, midtempo cheating ballad "I Know What It's Like in Her Arms," and you can hear the sound of a roaming spirit, trying to find its way home. On the latter album in this set, wooly, funky, honky tonk like "That Evil Child," (with a smoking Rhodes piano) juxtaposes with the lonely barroom ballad bandstander "The Heart of a Clown," and the painful weeper "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You.)" All of it adds up to a killer CD, one that underscores the truth in Hux's commitment to the Watson legacy: that this man is one of the greatest singers country music has ever produced. ~ Thom Jurek
