What an amazing experience it is, as God in His incredible love for me and perfect timing, brings me back with power and might to those places of wounding and emptiness in my heart and life for the purpose of healing and wholeness through Him. As a child, my identity, joy and peace got snuffed out through the experience of being sexually molested. For years I carried the accompanying fear, pain, shame, confusion and mistrust as well as a constant effort of upkeep and self protection that was never meant to be.What a joy to hear Jesus’ voice to my heart telling me that He will make everything right, that I don’t have to run away from me anymore, I don’t have to pretend that everything is all right, and that I can give over to Him this enormous load. As God began enabling me to face the truth of my heart so gently and carefully, I knew He could do anything! With joy and growing trust, I felt His arms wrap around me, past, present and future, with an ongoing process of healing and deliverance, while holding my hand, drying my tears, and whispering promises of hope, joy and peace in my heart and through His word.As I look at my life, and as God takes each piece and fits it together-- the good and the bad, to make up who I am-- I realize nothing is wasted; years, hurtful experiences, all of it gets transformed into something good and of worth.How can I ever give back to Him or adequately express my love and thankful heart for my life with Him and His redeeming touch on me? The reason Carly Simon gushes adoringly over David Saw in a bio she wrote for him that can be found on his MySpace is obvious: back in 1974, she gave birth to him in England and put him up for adoption. Not really. But so pure and pretty and mellow and real is Broken Down Figure, his first release on Simon's son Ben Taylor's label, Iris Records, that it sounds very much the product of a mingling of Simon and Taylor DNA. It's not just the playing, which is unpretentious, unhurried, and often understated, it's the words to these songs: "Some love sticks like glue, some love falls apart/Some love seems so cruel, when it keeps you in the dark/And some love breaks the rules, but some love breaks your heart," he sings on "Some Love," one of several tracks in this batch of ten that pulls at heartstrings with genuine force. Vocally, Saw can sound like a mashup of Jack Johnson and Josh Rouse, but artistically he belongs to the school of '70s strummers and singers who interpreted the rules of their own hearts while ignoring the whoosh of the broader world. Still, there's nothing retro about sincerity: Saw's simple songs are timeless in the Taylor tradition. Live at the Philharmonie was the Dave Pike Set's third record for MPS in the year 1969 alone; Noisy Silence-Gentle Noise (MPS 15215) and the stellar Four Reasons (MPS 15253) preceded it. One of the most interesting ideas about this amazing set of music concerns the notorious circumstances under which it was recorded, at the 1969 Berlin Jazz Days festival. The reason for this is the year itself: Miles Davis and his group had brought their fiery brand of electricity to jazz and its reverberations were being heard the world over. At the same time, prog rock and Krautrock were making their heads (considered ugly by jazz purists) known in the guises of Can, Neu!, Amon Düül, and Faust. Add to this Charlie Mariano's great band, the new hip embracing of rock culture by the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band, Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination & Brass, and any number of other groups, and Berlin was in a state of tension. The wild thing is, everybody agreed on Pike's group -- it was the bridge between the jazz tradition, what was transpiring, and what was to come. The band featured the leader on amplified vibes (he claims he was the first vibraphonist to have electric vibes), master guitarist and composer Volker Kriegel, bassist and cellist Johannes Anton Rettenbacher, and legendary drummer Peter Baumeister.
