Drummer Daniel and bassist/trombonist Chris, sons of the legendary jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck, lead a quartet that also features guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb. Though inevitably overshadowed by the reputation of their father, the Brubeck Brothers are no slouches, as CLASSIFIED, a nine-track excursion through classic, hard-swinging post-bop, attests. On cuts such as "Good Question" and "Heyoke," the Brubeck Brothers Quartet demonstrate a kinetic sense of group interplay and a penchant for fleet improvisation. The brothers even pay homage to their father with a rendition of his famous "Blue Rondo à La Turk," which closes out the album.

Chris wrote the beautiful ballad with a last-set-of-the-night-vibe -- "Friends Beyond Time" and also "Dance of the Shadows" - a 5/4 Bossa with compositional contributions from drummer Dan Brubeck who recently has been exposed to many interesting rhythmic patterns on his travels in South America. Dan also brought the intriguing 7/4 beat underlying "7th Sense" to the BBQ, then Mike and Chuck came up with the angular melodies that float over thJazzTimes (p.60) - "[T]heir lockstep rhythmic formations are never less than admirable here, and often quite exciting....The integration of reeds and jazz quartet is picture perfect, cinematic in scope and often breathtakingly beautiful."
