Narcotica album
$8.55 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming ...

| | Steve Hillage Motivation Radio CD (1977) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Japan
Narcotica music CDs
$10.25 Those in tune with being transported through music will want to station themselves near the speakers for Motivation Radio. Call it the "light side of the moon," this album draws the listener into its own astral plane with a glossy and gauzy sound similar to Pink Floyd without the darkness, or Alan Parsons Project without the dorkiness. The new age/space ideology isn't far removed from Gong's original alternate reality (remember the Octave Doctors?), spelled out best during the album's true point of transmigration, "Saucer Surfing." Hillage's guitar work is typically transcendent, Giraudy's keyboards a vital component (note the Doctor Who-isms of "Searching for the Spark"), and Joe Blocker's drums a frequent breath of change. Steve Hillage doesn't have the vocal presence to reach out to listeners; at best, he can meet them halfway. Motivation Radio works as well as it does because ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Narcotica songs
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is a fine example of that, a beautiful song that could offset Buckingham's gritty ramblings. ...

| | Rod Hughey Misery Loves Company CD (2006)
Narcotica songs
$9.75 Rod Hughey's musical path in life has been a dynamic journey. From open mic nights, two Kantishna Music Festivals, and bar appearances around Alaska to venues around the lower 48 to his home state of Michigan where he made several appearances sitting in with Souls, Inc., a Contemporary Christian Group. Rod moved to Alaska in the spring of 2001 to "screw his head on straight", as he likes to tell people. Living on the streets of Flint, Michigan kept him anchored to the reality that he was going to have to define his future or let the streets define it for him. The one positive he possessed and would take to Alaska was his love of music and his guitar, which he learned from his father as a teenager. He was impressed by energy of the Alaskan music scene, and it is that influence that spawned his musical journey. He enjoys playing anywhere now, and likes hanging out with fans and other artists alike. "Someone has always got a story or enthusiasm or something great that I try to take with me from every experience." His original music seems to have reflected that very philosophy from the beginning. "I just got tired of sitting around the living room by myself playing the same old riffs that had been plaguing my brain for years, sort of like a broken record" says Hughey. "I decided to write a song ("Misery Loves Company") and it turned out to be pretty entertaining", ...
