The fingers on pianist Brad Mehldau's hands are possessed by a sentient intelligence quick and inventive enough to inspire slack-jawed wonder. That intelligence is on prodigious display on the Brad Mehldau Trio's 2008 double-disc live outing. Recorded over four evenings at New York City's Village Vanguard, LIVE captures the pianist's elegant, thoughtful, exploratory style within a dynamic, dazzling trio setting.
Bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard exhibit supernatural sympathy with Mehldau, creating surging pockets of rhythm and open, shifting frameworks for melodic improvisation. The program consists of originals mixed with wildly eclectic covers (including Oasis's "Wonderwall," the Tin Pan Alley standard "More Than You Know," Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun," and John Coltrane's "Countdown"). This all makes for thoroughly engaging listening, and a testament to one of the finer talents in contemporary jazz.

JazzTimes (pp.102-103) - "Mehldau plays here with a daring abandon that sweeps all of the 12 performances far from where they began." Live
$14.65 Since making a middle-of-life comeback in the 1990s, saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Charles Lloyd has continually issued fascinating recordings. While some of them contain missteps, it's not for lack of ambition. For one of jazz's elder statesmen, Lloyd pushes his envelope of ideas about improvisation, rhythm and harmony, often to the breaking point. He is a player who sets sometimes impossibly high goals for himself, but in so doing, gives listeners something to really hold on to when encountering one of his albums or seeing him live. Jumping the Creek, which continues his association with ECM Records, is another compelling affair. The band -- pianist Geri Allen, bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Eric Harland -- is simply outstanding. Allen, particularly, hasn't shined on a record like this thus far this decade. Lloyd's compositional ideas here come from rhythmic phrases, small harmonic vamps and emotional thematics. Lloyd engages his quartet in various ways, sometimes in duets, sometimes trios, sometimes as a full band, often during the same composition. The whole quartet does engage fully on the 13-plus-minute opener "Ne Me Quitte Pas," with skeletal phrases becoming larger, striated harmonic statements as Allen uses both modal and post-bop concerns to flesh out the body of the tune. The saxophone/drums duet in "Ken Katta Ma Om," is an utterly lovely change-up that follows. The rest of the band doesn't even enter until halfway through. And Allen does this as a way of introducing a contrapuntal solo that touches upon both Andrew Hill and Lennie Tristano. The title track uses trio and quartet settings to explore the various tensions in melody. Lloyd is a master of moving from gorgeous, gently ...
| | Wynton Marsalis Live At The House Of Tribes CD (2005)
Live
$13.65 This live set finds jazz ambassador Wynton Marsalis doing what he does best--that is, playing straightforward, bop-inflected jazz with flawless technique. Marsalis pays homage to the masters with versions of Thelonious Monk's "Green Chimneys" and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," and offers a lilting, smoky reading of the standard "You Don't Know What Love Is."
There is plenty of stretching out over these six tracks, with superb solos from both ...
| | Miles Davis Cellar Door Sessions 1970 CDs (2005) Remastered; Box Set; Special Edition
Live
$87.89 Contains previously unreleased material. Some of the recordings on the CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS were originally released in edited form on the 1971 double-LP LIVE EVIL.
There is an entire universe contained in this box. Sumptuously packaged and scrupulously annotated, CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS 1970 is a six-disc set that documents Miles Davis's extended residency at the Washington, D.C., club. Davis is backed by a group of genius musicians: keyboardist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Michael Henderson, saxophonist Gary Bartz, percussionist Airto Moreira and guitarist John McLaughlin (who appears only on the last two discs). Together they pioneered an ecstatic fusion of jazz, rock, funk, and abstract sound-painting that established the blueprint for the future of progressive music.
Each disc contains a different live set, and while songs are often repeated across the set lists, no two tracks sound the same. The players improvise at a fever-pitch, pushing themselves to endless invention, and the ensemble's interplay--expressionistic, protean, and fierce--is near telepathic. The influence of rock artists like Sly Stone and Jimi Hendrix can be heard in the layering of deep funk rhythms and psychedelic inflections (especially with Miles's wah-filtered trumpet), but the overall sound seems to subsume and transcend the entire history of 20th century music. In a career full of musical innovation, this is some of Miles's most visionary work, and this essential set (which also boasts splendid remastering) documents it for a near-religious ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Live
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration to new heights.
The quartet shines on ballads ("Sweet and Lovely"), but the leaders display their best chemistry on the Monk's thorny, uptempo bop numbers. "Evidence" and "Epistrophy," for instance," have Monk adding rhythmic, dissonant punctuation to Coltrane's torrential stream of ideas, creating a thrilling push-pull balance. A superb date, and a must for fans of both artists, AT CARNEGIE HALL captures two of jazz's most important figures working ...
| | Keith Jarrett My Foolish Heart CDs (2007)
Live
$23.39 This release commemorates the 25th year of the jazz supergroup of pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Jack DeJohnette, one of the longest-running small combos in jazz history. This threesome is sometimes known as "the standards trio," their specialty being classic songs that have become cornerstones of jazz and pre-rock pop ("What's New," "The Song Is You"). One special thing about this trio is that both Peacock and DeJohnette played with the late Bill Evans, the intensely lyrical piano icon who was one of Jarrett's influences. Aspects of Evans's approach are all over their playing, from the melodious interpretations and innate sense of swing to the economy of style and graceful technique. Even though Jarrett, Peacock, and DeJohnette stretch out quite a bit, there ...
| | Charles Lloyd Rabo De Nube CD (2008)
Live
$15.05 A fixture on the jazz scene since the early 1960s, reedist Charles Lloyd has played with practically everyone under the sun and has demonstrated remarkable variety in his playing, ranging across post-bop, chamber jazz, free jazz, soul-jazz, and pop. Lloyd was approaching 70 at the time of RABO DE NUBE's release in 2008; the disc, a live performance, is some of the most vital and engaging of his career. In part this is thanks to the spectacularly talented personnel: pianist Jason Moran, drummer Eric Harlan, and bassist Reuben Rogers are some of the best younger players in the game. While Lloyd's sax and flute work stand out (on "Ramanujan" he also plays tarogato, a Middle Eastern wind instrument), this is undeniably a group effort, one that will be of interest of any modern ...

$10.15 The KingPin CompilationIs Son of Sid's third solo project presented by Heat City/Seven Records. The album is definitely his best effort yet, with hits like "Whatcha Know", the song describes livin' in Heat City Las Vegas behind the lights, while "Trainin' Day" shows the young MC's how to make it in the streets, then on the uplifting side, "These Women" & "Otherside of Town", targets the women who handle business in their life and a storyline about a institutionalized man who can't stay out of jail. The album features several of Las Vegas' well known MC's like:Spoatymac "The ...
