The daughter of the late 1970s R&B star Donnie Hathaway, Lalah Hathaway shares a family aptitude for a mellow, tender melody. Unlike many singers of her generation, Hathaway has been impacted by gospel, jazz, and pre-1960s pop music. These sounds, along with the contemporary influences of Rahsaan Petterson and Rex Rideout (both of whom lend their talents here), help make SELF PORTRAIT more than a just another chill-out disc of slow jams. The musical backdrop features deep bass lines and harmonious acoustic guitars, horns and finger-snapping, while Hathaway sings throughout with a rare mixture of poignancy and humor.
Had Lalah Hathaway's third and fourth solo albums been separated by a gap in time equal to the one between her second and third, Self Portrait would not have come out until 2014. But it arrived six years earlier, in time for her to connect with the rejuvenated Stax label, home of Angie Stone. The set reunites Hathaway with Rex Rideout, the producer/songwriter who worked with the singer on "Forever, for Always, for Love," the title cut of the Luther Vandross tribute album that appeared in 2004. Rideout is the primary collaborator, with his input on half of the songs, while kindred spirits Rahsaan Patterson and Sandra St. Victor also contribute to a handful of tracks. More mellow and unified than 2004's Outrun the Sky, the album maintains a steady flow, whether the backdrops feature midtempo dance rhythms and horns, deep basslines and finger snaps, or acoustic guitars and glistening keyboards. Nothing is bound to jump out of the speakers and pull you around the room, but there's an unshakable lingering effect with nearly every song. More than anything, the album helps bring back the art of the subtly seductive slow jam, despite the lyrical range, which covers personal issues almost as frequently as relationships. Slowest and most stunning is the closer, "Tragic Inevitability," co-produced with Manuel Hugas, Wiboud Burkens, and Anthony Jeffries; it's a breakup song ("It hurts me so/And I will not be consoled"), but no one will be doing any kind of separating while the song is within earshot. In the liners, check the random jabs at vocalists who, unlike Hathaway herself, require studio enhancements: "Pitch is the new black"; "Auto tune this!" She uses some effects of her own here, but they are used for effect, not as a corrective device. In total control of her voice at all times, she has never been prone to showing off for the sake of it, so it is easy to not fully appreciate just how exceptional she is. ~ Andy Kellman

5 stars My Naked Truth
This CD is spectacular. I have heard Lalah in person, and most of her recorded music doesn't do her live vocal gymnastics justice. I identify with the music. I was raised in the same city as one of her producers, Rex Rideout. The CD incites deep thought and questions of identity, but also simply rocks your stereo with each track. I've admired her since "Baby Don't Cry" and "Smile". Girlfriend can't be duplicated. Congratulations Lalah!

5 stars So so beautiful....
There hasn't been a CD this soothing in years. Her voice and the material come together so seamlessly that it is breathtaking. I've had the chance to see her in person a few times now so what you hear on the CD is what you actually get to hear in person. She is such a beautiful person and her music is so sensual. My favorites here are "On Your Own", "What Goes Around" and "For Always" ....really dreamy these songs are. The whole CD is just about as good as it gets really. It is also nice to see that she isn't taking 10 between CDs now. I'll admit that this CD had to grow on me at first, it seemed too tame compared to the last one, but then it hits you. Such pure sweetness and simplicity is a rarity today so you simply must get this one.

Darwa comes through blazing hot, marking the first artist release following a series of compilations for Abstrakt Reality. Darwa is Darja Klancar and Mario Marlot. Darja writes the songs; Peter Lorimer (Lorimer/Humpty Vision, Danzig, Martha Wash and Kristine W...to name a few) and Mario Marlot co-produce the tracks. The style is reminiscent of something like "Everything but the girl" meets "Dido" whilst hanging out at "Morcheeba's" pad, with "Madonna" dropping in for a visit. The album is very vocal, very melodic, and very danceable. The first track (Hard times) was produced exclusively by Peter Lorimer and the song flows in-between hard guitars and smooth melodic textures. ...
