On 2008's FUNPLEX, the B-52's fully awaken from their 16-year cryogenic freeze to finally present a studio follow-up to 1992's GOOD STUFF. While the vocals of Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson remain as buoyant as ever, and the speak/sing voice of Fred Schneider is back in all its nasal glory, the band's New Wave dance-rock sound has been given an electronic face lift, thanks to both guitarist Keith Strickland and producer Steve Osborne (KT Tunstall, New Order), as best revealed on the pulsing "Juliet of the Spirits" and the campy, robotic "Love in the Year 3000." Those pining for the group's scrappier, more organic leanings will be pleased to hear the rockabilly-tinged "Pump," the sassy "Hot Corner," and the wonderfully lo-fi "Eyes Wide Open," all tracks that evoke the ensemble's gonzo Georgia-bred roots. Though FUNPLEX isn't a completely consistent affair, it successfully delivers the wacky, party-primed B-52's vibe, making it a fine (if belated) addition to the veteran act's catalogue.
The B-52's: Cindy Wilson, Fred Schneider , Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland.
Spin (p.92) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Here, they refresh all their tricks, with stripped-down, energetic guitar plus lithe electronics." Entertainment Weekly (p.65) - "[T]he B-52s are still gloriously single-minded party animals more interested in giddily rocking love shacks than stoking intellects." -- Grade: B+ Q (Magazine) (p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The opening 'Pump' serves both as an irresistible invitation to party and a reminder of what we've been missing: slamming beat, Wilson and Kate Pierson shimmying like crazy as Fred Schneider barks out nonsense..." Blender (Magazine) (p.76) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he guitars are cranked to garage-level rawness...[and] the long-missing Cindy Wilson is back sassing it up..." Harp (magazine) (p.102) - "[T]he tones are kickier than ever and often serious and taut, there's nothing that'll cease the B's from practicing the best in Felliniesque pop and space kitsch. Primo." Record Collector (magazine) (p.86) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "'Pump' leaps out at you, while 'Hot Corner' reinforces their role as keepers of the crazy beat." Funplex Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Burning up my brain I have not been much of a fan of the B-52s until now. I can't stop listening to this album and the more I listen the more songs I like. Funplex and Eyes Wide Open hooked me in the beginning Deviant Ingredient and Dancing Now pulled me in and now Pump and Juliet of the Spirits are tickling my neurons building new pathways that I just want to keep reinforcing with more of the album. I was afraid it would sound just like the old B-52s (not such a bad thing) but this album sounds ultra modern and up-to-date while still sounding like the B-52s. Great job. B-52s back in TOP FORM.... Great rock/pop dance collection with
touches of their classic new wave 80's sound. Garage guitar excellence and
Kate/Cindy harmonies fill out these modern vibrant tunes, 52s fans will
love these new ones. Finally after all
these years(16) new tunes will be outfitted for the road, can you believe
these guys have returned and with one
of the best collections of rock seen
in a long while, danceable, funky gems
from start to finish. FUN MUSIC for
all generations, another classic to
sit next to The B-52s and Wild Planet
as well as the Cosmic Thing best seller. Start to finish not a bad one
in the bunch, just futuristic, sonic
mindblowing party pleasers. Check out
the spacey lyrics and attidute. Girl group harmonies and Freds dead pan wacky one liners add up to winner! They've arrived again! Submitted by littlebibs (Kingston, NH USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 3 of 4 found this helpful.
As good as it gets! The B-52s made musical magic when they made this album. It's amazing. My feet didn't stop tapping throughout the entire album. It was great to hear Fred Schneider's voice again. And Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson are awesome beyond belief. The guitar riffs are very catchy too. A great album! Submitted by Boogie Bot (Southfield, MI) Was This Review Helpful? Haven't Lost It! If you're a fan of the B-52's, buy this album! They are keeping true to their sound of their previous works, and they still rock! Only one problem; When are they going to release it on CD?? Submitted by J.R. (Minnesota) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.

$6.49 The JukeHounds name comes from the rough and rowdy juke joints of the past where great blues was served up along with dancing, drinking, and good times. They're an up-beat band that makes you want to move, true to the soul of the blues. The JukeHounds showcase the talents of guitarist John Stachela. His ripping slide and soulful licks will bring to mind blues legends of the past and present. The LA Music Scene published, "John Stachela on guitar is something to see; during his solos his seamless fingering was dizzying to the eye and blissful to the ear.' Don't let that fool you though. Not just some flashy guitar player, Johnny can capture your soul with one note. He has shared the stage with John Mayall, Billy Preston, Robben Ford, Jonny Lang, and Los Lonely Boys, and has performed such events as SXSW, Beale Street Music Festival, and the Verizon Music Festival, along with countless blues clubs. Stachela has surrounded himself with blues veterans Brandon Matheson and Don ...
| | Jimmy Smith Live At Club Baby Grand, Vol. 2 CD (1956) Remastered
Funplex album
$9.55 Playing piano-style single-note lines on his Hammond B-3 organ, Jimmy Smith revolutionized the use of the instrument in a jazz combo setting in the mid-'50s and early '60s, and he was still the next big thing on the block when he recorded two LP volumes live over the course of two afternoon sets and three evening sets on August 4, 1956, at Club Baby Grand in Wilmington, DE. Smith had already tracked three successful studio LPs for Blue Note Records at sessions held earlier in the year in February, March, and June, and the time seemed right to present him in a concert setting where the full whirlwind force of his speedy playing could be best appreciated. Working with guitarist Thornel Schwartz and his longtime drummer Donald Bailey (who worked with Smith throughout his Blue Note years), Smith is 90 percent of the show here, bursting out with amazing rapid runs on the B-3, filling the air from one end of the room to the other as only he could. This second volume draws three of its four tracks from the second afternoon set ("Get Happy" is from the last set of the evening show) and is highlighted by the opening track, a ...

Funplex music CDs
$10.45 There is a long and rich if somewhat unfortunate tradition of veteran country acts re-recording their classic material for a new label in the latter years of their career, and Blue Mountain have apparently chosen to introduce this phenomenon to the alt-country community. Blue Mountain recorded four good-to-excellent albums for Roadrunner Records between 1995 and 2001, breaking up not long after the release of Roots. In 2008, Blue Mountain has reunited and now that bassist Laurie Stirratt is running an independent record label, the band has chosen to recut 14 songs from Dog Days, Home Grown, and Tales of a Traveler for a de facto "Greatest Almost Hits" collection ...
