On album number nine, Snoop branches out a bit, assuming executive producer credits and working as one-third of the production team QDT (along with Teddy Riley and DJ Quik). While the production hovers around 1970s R&B, soul, and smoothed-out funk (with conspicuous samples from Marvin Gaye, the Isleys, Brooklyn Dreams, and Prince Phillip Mitchell), there are also a few curious excursions into '80s synth-pop ("Cool") and even country music ("My Medicine"). At the same time, Snoop's lyrics are all over the place. Over the course of the album's 21 tracks, he goes from mega-boasting on his fame and wealth ("Gangsta Like Me," "Staxx in my Jeans") to celebrity name-dropping ("Deez Hollywood Nights") to seductive talk-box crooning ("Sexual Eruption") and groupie-love anthems ("Life of da Party," "Those Gurlz") to bittersweet reminiscing on his rise from the hood ("Can't Say Goodbye") and dedications to his wife and kids ("Been Around tha World"). As the title suggests, EGO TRIPPIN' is all about Mr. Calvin Broadus, and therefore the outing contains just a handful of guest spots from Too Short, Raphael Saadiq, Mistah F.A.B., and Charlie Wilson. As the title suggests, EGO TRIPPIN' is a selfish outing with just a handful of guest spots from Too Short, Raphael Saadiq, Mistah F.A.B., and Charlie Wilson. The original idea behind what Snoop Dogg considers his ninth album -- ignoring all those pesky and shoddy fringe releases -- was that the title represented a truly solo effort with no guest shots. As the street date grew closer, the rapper flipped the script and decided that Ego Trippin' referred to how he "let" people write songs for the album, songs Snoop could rap and sometimes, shockingly, sing. The leadoff good-time single "Sensual Seduction" -- or "Sexual Eruption" on the explicit album -- proved the latter wasn't a bad idea at all, with Snoop crafting a hooky bedroom track using both a smirk and a throwback Zapp feel. It was a perfect flagship release for an album that tries numerous things but never tries too hard, plus one where the nostalgia is plentiful and perfectly chosen. At the heart of it all are the "overseers" of the album, QDT Muzic, a production crew formed by Snoop along with new jack swing legend Teddy Riley and West Coast hero DJ Quik. This fascinating mix of veterans somehow handles everything from the crooked, crip-walking "Gangsta Like Me" to an unbelievably faithful and fun cover of the Time's "Cool" with Snoop singing and strutting just like Morris Day. Throwaway moments like the country song -- for real -- "My Medicine" are balanced by rich and honest moments like "Been Around tha World," where the rapper reminds listeners he's actually married and delivers a heartfelt "I'll be home soon" number. It's the one time his words are the focus, and while it's never clear how much Snoop actually wrote, the ghostwriters he's admitted to hiring have the thug script down and rarely disappoint. What is disappointing is the woefully long track list, the redundant numbers, and the trimming required to keep frRolling Stone (pp.63-64) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[H]is languorous rapping has a way of inspiring inventively freaky sounds from producers....Result: the best Snoop disc in years..." Entertainment Weekly (p.p.74) - "All of Snoop's personalities make appearances on his ninth CD, Ego Trippin'....It's sentimental, it's fun....Maybe this old Dogg doesn't need any new tricks." -- Grade: B Vibe (p.80) - "Lead single 'Sensual Seduction' is an undeniable masterpiece of throwback funk schmaltz..." LOVE this album minus 2 songs The 2 songs that I dont like on this cd are "One Chance" and "Sexual Eruption" damn T-Pain for making the voice box thing cool. But besides that this cd is bad a$$ I love the song "Medicine" and "SD is out" are 2 of my fav songs and shows the good side of his creative side un like R&G which is the worst Snoop CD IVE EVER HEARD and probally ever made. On this cds he shows that he still has the funky laid back flow he has always had but lost for a sec. After this album I FEEL LIKE I CAN SAY SNOOPS BACC!!!!!!!!! Ego Trippin
$14.55 Personnel: John Patitucci (acoustic bass); Sachi Patitucci (cello); Joe Lovano (alto clarinet, tenor saxophone); Brian Blade (drums); Ruggerio Boccato (percussion). Audio Mixer: Joe Barbaria. Liner Note Author: John Patitucci. Photographers: Mel Rubin; Lisa Stein. Bassist John Patitucci's tenure with the Concord label has found him working in a variety of contexts, from Latin jazz to string quartets with saxophones, but REMEMBRANCE, his sixth album for the label and his first release as a leader since 2006's Grammy-nominated LINE BY LINE, is possibly his most stripped-down release to date: a straight trio session with saxophonist Joe Lovano and drummer Brian Blade. Blade has been working with Patitucci for several albums now, but Lovano is a relative newcomer to the bassist's discography, having only previously appeared on a few tracks from 2001's COMMUNION.
