Guitarist Dave Specter bears the torch for Chicago electric blues, and on LIVE IN CHICAGO the Windy City native gets a chance to strut his stuff. Specter's clean, crisp playing is elegant, but carries enough sting and swing to keep things lively. Joined by a crack band and three guest vocalists, Specter blazes through a mix of originals (some penned by Specter himself, and some by his guests Sharon Lewis and Tad Robinson) that have the hometown crowd hooting and hollering. Chicago blues fans who pick up this disc will be taken back home.
Blues guitarist Dave Specter is never prone to grandstanding. He communicates an inherent sense of style and form, subtlety and swing, keeping his magnetic needle always fixed on a steady, unalterable course. Recorded live at Buddy Guy's Legends and Rosa

Down Beat (p.73) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "These are fascinating performers, moderately vigorous in their attack. The tear shed by Lewis shed by Lewis at the close of her heavy-hearted ballad 'Angel' is a tangible sign of the connection they made with their hearts." Living Blues (p.65) - "On the opener, 'Boss Funk/Riverside Ride,' Specter brings a rough-hewn tone to his lithe, elegantly weaving lines, and seasons everything with fatback soul chording." | | Dave Specter Is What It Is CD (2004)
Live In Chicago CD music
$12.59 The long established musical relationship between guitarists Dave Specter and Steve Freund goes back nearly 20 years, when Specter sought out Freund as a guitar teacher. They have shared many stages, but this marks the first occasion that they have recorded together. In the best of the Chicago blues tradition as illustrated by the legendary Delmark label, Is What It Is is a loose, swinging, tough blues date filled with great tunes, inspired playing and loose-groove vibes. While Specter has become well-known for his jazzy blues playing, his former teacher Freund has stayed close to the roots of the Chicago sound. That contrast works beautifully here on both covers and originals. ...
| | Ronnie Earl Duke Meets The Earl CD (2005)
Live In Chicago music CDs
$14.15 The Duke Meets the Earl seems like an obvious album, pairing two of New England's finest contemporary blues guitarists, Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl, who both share the same sort of hard, clear tone in their playing (Earl actually replaced Robillard in Roomful of Blues when the latter left the group for a solo career). For Earl, who has been working in a kind of jazz blues hybrid style in recent years, it marks a return to straight blues, and with guests like Jimmy McGriff and Mighty Sam McClain aboard on select tracks, The Duke Meets the Earl has the feel of a super session. Throughout, Earl's guitar is featured in the left channel and Robillard's ...

| | Introducing Nick Stanley CD (2008)
Live In Chicago album
$13.29 Nick Stanley is a jazz musician from Tucson, Arizona. At age 20 he recorded an album of standards, blues and solo piano works featuring some of Tucson's best musicians/educators. Nick Stanley; piano, Scott Black: bass, Mike Kuhn: Tenor Saxophone, Fred Hayes and Pete Swan; drums. All of the tunes and arrangements on this album were inspired by earlier recordings by artists such as: Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, Gene Harris, Cannonball Adderley, Ray Brown, Cedar Walton, Wes Montgomery, Stanley Turrentine and Horace Silver, while the solo piano tracks evoke sounds reminiscent of Monk, Harry Connick, Jr. and New Orleans-pianist James Booker. Tucson Citizen NewspaperCD Review: Local 'Introducing Nick Stanley' light-fingered showcaseGrade: ACHUCK GRAHAMPublished: 08.07. 2008"Introducing Nick Stanley" (Nick Stanley)Making his own entrance onto the local CD scene, Tucson pianist Nick Stanley presents a light-fingered showcase of straight-ahead jazz with a hefty blues chaser. Each of the 13 tracks is inspired by an earlier, often iconographic, recording that influenced Stanley's even-handed approach to improvisation. The album's liner notes make these connections clear, so listeners can also appreciate this young musician's respect for the pre-fusion era of jazz when romance and lyricism were at least as important as sizzling technique. Among those cited ...
