Issued by the Equal Vision label in 2008, Alive in Wild Paint's debut, CEILINGS, consists of largely downbeat emo-pop tunes, bringing to mind a Coldplay/Dashboard Confessional collaboration performed under heavy tranquilizers. Key moments of this hypnotically languid outing include the airy "Crystal Selves" and the gently drifting "Everywhere, An Ocean," songs that are carried by frontman Travis Bryant's plaintive vocals.
Recording information: Music Friends Studios, Pasadena, CA.
Personnel: Travis Bryant (vocals, guitar); Matt Grabe (guitar, piano).
Audio Mixer: Michael Barbiero.

Ceilings album
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody and builds the bulk of Battle Studies upon them: the elegant ...
| | Tom Petty Live Anthology CDs (2009)
Ceilings CD music
$19.34 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, there's an additional CD, plus two previously unreleased DVDs -- a 1978 New Years Eve concert from Santa Monica, ...

| | Lou Reed New Sensations CD (1984) Reissue; Remastered
Ceilings songs
$11.18 Lou Reed never struck anyone as one of the happiest guys in rock & roll, so some fans were taken aback when his 1984 album New Sensations kicked off with "I Love You, Suzanne," a catchy up-tempo rocker that sounded a lot like a pop tune. After reaffirming his status as one of rock's greatest poets with The Blue Mask and Legendary Hearts, what was Reed doing here? Lou was having a great time, and his pleasure was infectious -- New Sensations is a set of straight-ahead rock & roll that ranks with the most purely enjoyable albums of Lou's career. Reed ...

| | Stiff Little Fingers Nobody's Heroes CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Ceilings songs
$11.65 Roaring back with a vengeance and seemingly without pause for breath, NOBODYS HEROES finds Stiff Little Fingers once again examining the frailty of the human condition in time of war. While this preoccupation with life and death can come across as either preachy (Billy Bragg), goofy (Chumbawumba), or even pedantic (the Clash's later work), to SLF it seems more than just a reaction to circumstance than a defense mechanism in a country divided by barbed-wire.
However, SLF are canny enough to realize that no mere punk band can actually cause change by itself (as evidenced in the brilliant title track where lead singer Jake Burns advises fans not to let your heroes get your kicks for you) as true change comes from collective involvement. "Tin Soldiers," with its rant against the futility of the army, and "Fly the Flag" with its indictment of Great Britain's colonialism and neglect of the poor prove that perhaps the best resistance is found in punk rock catharsis. "Bloody Dub" finds the band once again embracing outlaw imagery and the oppositional culture of reggae's most mysteriously satisfying subculture.
Issued only a year after Inflammable Material, if it weren't for Jake Burns' trademark singing voice, punters would swear Nobody's Heroes was the work of a different band. Issued by Chrysalis in the U.K., Stiff Little Fingers sounded like a band who had gone through their own metamorphosis. The songs -- still written by Burns and journalist Gordon Ogilvie -- were tighter, there was a bit more space, and the hooks were solid, cutting razor sharp. While many of the band's original fans cried "sellout" many more new ones came on-board and more temperate critical heads posited that the album was actually light years beyond its predecessor musically and lyrically. History bears this out. While it may sound like a slicker version ...

| | Peter Erskine Worth The Wait CD (2007)
Ceilings CD music
$12.95 If a jazz concert calls for co-leaders who have big-band credentials, drummer Peter Erskine and trumpeter Tim Hagans are both well qualified for the job. Erskine's résumé includes experience in the orchestras of Stan Kenton and Maynard Ferguson, while Hagans' big-band experience includes Kenton, Woody Herman, the Danish Radio Big Band (under Thad Jones' direction), and Maria Schneider. Neither have played with big bands exclusively by any means, but both of them have demonstrated that they are comfortable in both a small-group environment and a big-band environment -- and they certainly sound like they are enjoying themselves on Worth the Wait. Recorded live in Luleĺ, Sweden, in 2006, this 68-minute CD finds co-leaders Erskine and Hagans (who serves as the concert's conductor) joining forces with Sweden's Norrbotten Big Band. Between Erskine, Hagans, and Norrbotten, there are 18 musicians on board; however, the soloists have plenty of room to stretch out. Big-band concerts, by their very nature, require a strong ...
