BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is jazz saxophone icon Paul Desmond's homage to Simon and Garfunkel.
Originally released in 1970 on A&M Records, Paul Desmond's BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is the label's last release to bear the influence of producer Creed Taylor. Like Taylor's earlier A&M albums with Desmond, Wes Montgomery and others, BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is a complex blend of cool jazz, easy listening, and pop, featuring lush orchestrations behind Desmond's alto sax and Herbie Hancock's electric piano. Taken entirely from the Paul Simon songbook, the 10 cuts range from a hymn-like reading of the title track to a spunky Latin-jazz take on "Cecilia." The 2008 Verve reissue features no bonus tracks, but has excellent remastered sound. Bridge Over Troubled Water album
$51.95 THE COMPLETE VERVE STUDIO MASTER TAKES makes a definitive and compelling case for Holiday's Verve tenure. Packaged in a deep-dish metallic box (which resembles the world's most beautiful lunch pail), THE COMPLETE comprises six CDs, a 60-page booklet filled with rare photographs and superb liner notes, and dazzlingly crisp sound via digital remastering. The musicians on these sessions were some of the finest of the era, and Holiday herself--even with a gift impaired by time and abuse--sings with impeccable artistry, and beautifully enough to break the heart. The set is essential for completists, and is also a great one-stop for those looking to acquaint themselves with Lady Day's later work.
Billie Holiday fans will argue eternally over the relative merits of the different phases of her career. In these arguments Lady Day's work for Verve, which roughly covered the last decade of her life, often gets short shrift. While it cannot be denied that Holiday had lost much of the elasticity and spring in her voice (due in large part to a rough ...

| | Charlie Haden Not In Our Name CD (2005)
Bridge Over Troubled Water music CDs
$15.35 Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though never flashy--bass work, allowing the other musicians, particularly guitarist Steve Cardenas and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, to shine. This is big-band music that can shift with ease from avant-garde passages to swinging melodies, and the talent on hand adds ...
| | Miles Davis Cellar Door Sessions 1970 CDs (2005) Remastered; Box Set; Special Edition
Bridge Over Troubled Water songs
$87.89 Contains previously unreleased material. Some of the recordings on the CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS were originally released in edited form on the 1971 double-LP LIVE EVIL.
There is an entire universe contained in this box. Sumptuously packaged and scrupulously annotated, CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS 1970 is a six-disc set that documents Miles Davis's extended residency at the Washington, D.C., club. Davis is backed by a group of genius musicians: keyboardist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Michael Henderson, saxophonist Gary Bartz, percussionist Airto Moreira and guitarist John McLaughlin (who appears only on the last two discs). Together they pioneered an ecstatic fusion of jazz, rock, funk, and abstract sound-painting that established the blueprint for the future of progressive music.
Each disc contains a different live set, and while songs are often repeated ...
| | Stanley Turrentine That's Where It's At CD (1962) Bonus Track; Remastered
Bridge Over Troubled Water album
$8.55 A Blue Note release with Les McCann on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Otis Finch on drums. Small group format. Excellent (and exciting) soul-jazz session with Turrentine blowing hot. ~ Ron Wynn & Michael Erlewine
This 1962 session places tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine in the company of pianist Les McCann, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Otis Finch. Of the six cuts on the original release, McCann, who was already in serious soul-jazz territory, wrote four. His meaty three- and four-chord figures are prominently placed and, as always, his sense of time and swing are everywhere. "Smile, Stacey" kicks it off in full blowing fare with Turrentine walking the line between soul-jazz and hard bop like a tightrope. His earthy tone is particularly muscular and quick here. His own blues ballad, "Soft Pedal Blues," follows, with Turrentine doing his best Ben Webster with slow, smoky breathy tones and McCann trilling across the top on the turnarounds. The slippery soul-blues of "Pia" is a shimmering little groover by McCann with him singing along with the lines in his solo. On his "We'll See Yaw'll After While, Ya Heah," his gospel chops come pouring out into the lyric until Turrentine moves it to ...
| | Jimmy Raney Featuring Bob Brookmeyer CD (1956) Remastered
Bridge Over Troubled Water CD music
$9.59 Assisted by the trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, the post-bop guitarist Jimmy Raney is heard here in a 1956 session performing a varied set that displays his lyrical, often cerebral playing to its best advantage, including the standards "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and "Isn't It Romantic."
Though Jimmy Raney recorded under his own name as early as 1953, it's this 1956 set that is regarded as his arrival as a leader. Raney is as fine an arranger as he is a guitarist. These eight tracks with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone -- another fine arranger in a soloist's role -- shine with the ease and fluidity of the best of the cool sessions recorded at the dawn of hard bop. One of the finest examples of the interplay between Raney and Brookmeyer occurs at the beginning of the album's second track, "How Long Has This Been Goin' On," where the pair engage in a brief contrapuntal dialogue before Brookmeyer solos on the melody and Raney fills the space behind him gently by whispering his chords and fills through the trombonist's phrasing before taking his own solo and slipping an inverted harmonic pattern on the tune's lyric line. The pair re-engage about halfway through before Dick Katz solos on piano with a bluesy series of runs in the upper register. Raney's own tunes, such as "The Flag Is Up," are strident and swinging without losing their breezy, cool feel . Raney's solo is a mix of bop ...
