The daughter and granddaughter of coal miners raised in West Virginia, Kathy Mattea has had a lifelong and complex relationship with the element. In the aftermath of the Sago mine disaster in 2006, when 12 miners perished, Mattea was inspired to create the song cycle COAL. A social and environmental activist as well as a musician, Mattea draws on all strands of her beliefs and biography for these 11 songs. They avoid finger-pointing and easy moralizing, accepting that there are no easy answers for the problems of her hometown area or the country as a whole. However, the deep emotion and plainspoken truth of songs like "Black Lung," "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive," and "The L&N Don't Stop Here Anymore" is obvious even to those who had never given a moment's thought to the subject. Mattea and co-producer Marty Stuart give the album a suitably stripped-down, folky sound.

Dirty Linen (p.44) - "Mattea's voice grabs an open vowel an soars along like a hawk on air currents, making tiny midair adjustments to prolong the ride." No Depression (pp.64-66) - "[Her voice] is careful and carefully modulated....[I]t is a complicated conversation, one she seeks gently to engage all of us in." Paste (magazine) (p.69) - "Mattea's voice -- full, soulful and without twang -- adds welcome power to the minimalist production..." Back to the roots This is the best CD Kathy Mattea has produced in many years. The music is great acoustic sound, back to her folk roots, what she does best. Her voice is warm and full of feelings as ever, and the instrumentations are perfect. "Green rolling hills" is an absolute earworm. Congratulations to Kathy Mattea and her producer Marty Stuart. A Personal Testament Kathy Mattea has gone back to her roots in West Virginia - a journey that in part was inspired by a recent coal mine disaster. The playing is very inspired and Mattea's vocal delivery is something you have to admire. The songs have a timeless quality, and the predominantly acoustic setting shouldn't prevent you from listening to this album. Submitted by sm.and (Hvidovre, Denmark) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Diamond is Carbon Based What a dichotomy - coal, curse and doom for those who take it to the surface is related to the hardest material on Earth, diamond; as anorganic chemistry explains the mistery of their relationship, pure, soulful music explains the ties between Kathy Mattea and her roots.
I don't think that without her ancestry and miners' blood heritage, the songs would have reached the sublime state presented on this album.
The artwork - vintage photos, shades of grey and the black, of course! - transports us to the deep underground where these songs were inspired from, only to lift us back to heights hard to be imagined.
Old traditional songs add serenity to the general presentation.
Her powerful voice is only apparently contrasting to the sensible lyrics, the result being an excellent path, marked with true diamonds...
Acoustic biased recording, with poignant mandoline, steel and upright bass compliments the strong 'ballad-like' voice of the artist.
One special mention to the cover version of Darrel Scott's 'You'll never live Harlan Alive' - Kathy is an Artist with capital A and this album has it's place in Top 10 Country in 2008. Submitted by pro.realestate (Bucharest, Romania) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$14.75 Having long transcended her country music roots, Kathy Mattea explores further afield in this folk- and world music-flavored set. $17.99 Not since Prince released the three-hour, three-CD set EMANCIPATION in 1996 or the Magnetic Fields took a similar number of discs for the sprawling 69 LOVE SONGS in 1999 has an artist attempted something as expansive as Vince Gill's THESE DAYS. A four-disc box set of all new material, nearly all of it Gill originals, THESE DAYS is possibly the widest-ranging country album of the modern era. The four discs are thematically and stylistically arranged. Disc one, WORKIN' ON A BIG CHILL, is a 1960s-flavored rock-and-roll album that recalls Bob Dylan's late '60s work with the ...
