WAR, U2's first gold album, established them as one of the great cutting-edge bands of early '80s rock and the definitive post-punk commercial breakout. From the insularity and ruminative splendor of their studio work, U2 blossomed into a visceral live band capable of turning elegant webs of sound into in-your-face rock and roll. The Edge's innovative guitar work was now augmented by his piano playing (particularly on the hit single "New Year's Day"), while Bono's lyrics turned explicitly to politics for the first time ("Sunday Bloody Sunday").

War Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Rock's best protest album U2 have had some measure of commercial success before they came up with the effectively titled album "War", but "War" really cemented them as the international stars they became. Every single song on here resonates with the theme of war and its effects. Now, in 2009, it still resonates as strongly as it did back in the eighties. Listen to "Seconds", and then think about 9/11, for an example. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" may have actually been Bono's rant against the IRA back in Ireland. If you watch the "Rattle & Hum" documentary, he really lays it on thick against the IRA in the middle of the song. "New Year's Day" is scary, but at the same time hopeful, almost as if it documented the lives of oppressed people and their desire for freedom from tyranny, without ever mentioning anything whatsoever in connection with those subjects. "Like A Song" and "Two Hearts Beat As One" are more straightforward rock-and-roll, but the album's mood keeps you thinking about war throughout the entire album. "Drowning Man" is a surreal piece of acoustic strumming, and "The Refugee" is bouncy and light, in heavy and stark contrast to its dire and hopeful-but-not-so-hopeful lyrics. The album's major opus, however, is its last song, "40". This song became a massive concert favorite, and often served as one of the best ways to end their concerts, even well into their "Achtung Baby" days. And, to put it simply, it brings you all the way out of the depressing mood the rest of the album may have put you in, and restored all faith in humanity that you may have lost. Emotionally, that is what you feel after listening to that song. The album as a whole was ambitious, but not overblown (unlike some progressive rock records), and it accomplished what it was attempting far better than many folk or folk-rock records of the sixties and the seventies. By far one of their best albums, and one of the best albums of all time. Submitted by Galen (Anchorage, AK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

War album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. Otis' first act as a recording bandleader was to borrow Jimmy Rushing from Count Basie! Rushing sounds right at home with this group, which included tenor saxophonist Paul Quinichette, pianist Bill Doggett, and bassist Curtis Counce. During "Preston's Love Mansion," as Doggett ...

| | U2 Joshua Tree CD (1987) Remastered
War songs
$10.45 THE JOSHUA TREE won the 1987 Grammy award for album of the year.
Few bands are as ready for superstardom as U2 circa 1986. After chart successes with WAR and THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE and a high profile appearance at Live Aid, the Irish quartet holed up at a Dublin studio with engineers Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, and crafted the definitive sound of late '80s mainstream rock. Deftly marrying WAR's edgy bombast, THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE's impressionism, Eno's ambient flourishes, and the band's newfound interest in American roots music, THE JOSHUA TREE is U2's crowning moment, a perfect nexus of the band's expansive muse and the popular zeitgeist. It consistently ranks in the higher reaches of critics' lists of the greatest albums of all time.
Thanks to both Eno's georgeous production and a stellar set of songs, the album has aged stunningly. The first three tracks--the rousing "Where the Streets Have No Name," the gospel-inflected "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," and the tortured, echo-drenched ballad "With or Without You"--have all become FM standards, but ...
| | U2 October CD (1981) Remastered
War album
$9.99 Though it's probably one of their least-acclaimed albums, OCTOBER is where it all began to come together for U2. The youthful exuberance they demonstrated on BOY was now a given, but for this, their second album, the conceptual end of things began to coalesce as well. The Edge had begun to expand his sonic palette, and the effects-heavy guitar approach that he would rely on for the next several years came to full fruition here. There's further development of the bold, anthemic ...

War album
$11.39 “When you are formed and fashioned to do something, you can’t run away from it. That’s what happened to me, and I haven’t turned back since.” This belief is the driving force behind the rising star of singer/songwriter Lindsay R. Watson. Born and raised in Connecticut, she began her musical journey as a classically trained singer during her high school and college years and began to hone her melodic singing style after becoming the lead soloist in her local church. Lindsay soon outgrew classical music and yearning for something more, she made the difficult decision to stop singing while she waited for her opportunity.  That opportunity presented itself in 2003 after coming to the attention of producer Di’Mon Brown who was working on his first gospel project called GodsHouze. Seeing her true potential Di’Mon invited Lindsay to become a member of the group. After her tenure with the group ended in the spring of 2005 Lindsay branched out and shared the stage with R&B legends such as Ray Goodman and Brown, The Stylistics, and Blue Magic as their opening act in the summer of 2005. Her strong performance and commanding stage presence paved the way for the opportunity that she had truly been waiting for. Convinced that she was finally ready, Di’Mon approached Lindsay about recording a solo album. Giving Lindsay his unique sound of Soul, R&B, and Funk she transformed from a classical singer into a sexy soul diva and took the Di’Mon Brown sound and made ...
