Van Halen album
$30.75 These anthemic Brit rockers weren't able to scale the heights as, say, Led Zep or Aerosmith, but they managed to make a whole bunch of beautiful noise nonetheless. This reissue of their 1978 album features "Only You Can Rock Me," "Born To Lose," and "Cherry."
UFO had finally fulfilled their potential with 1977's exceptional hard rock tour de force, LIGHTS OUT, and released another prime slice of heavy metal just one year later, OBSESSION. While most '70s Euro-metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc., dealt largely with doom and gloom, UFO proved to have more in common with such US melodic hard rockers as Van Halen.
OBSESSION proved to be UFO's most successful studio album ever, on the strength of such hard rocking highlights as "Only You Can Rock Me" and "Ain't No Baby." Even though guitarist Michael Schenker again pushes the songs to the limit here with his superb playing, OBSESSION would prove to be his final studio album with UFO. After just one more release, the classic live set STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT, Schenker left to briefly rejoin the Scorpions, before launching the Michael Schenker Group.

| | Michael Schenker Assault Attack CD (1982) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve
Van Halen CD music
$37.59 Michael Schenker's pairing with former Rainbow wailer Graham Bonnet made perfect sense, since Schenker's facile, classically flavored Euro metal guitar style is a graceful extension of Ritchie Blackmore's innovations. The results on Assault Attack are pleasing; while Schenker predictably delivers top-notch performances, Bonnet's vocals are edgier and more engaging than those of former MSG singer Gary Barden. [A bonus tracks edition of Assault Attack was released in 2006.] ~ Andy Hinds
Limited edition digitally remastered Japanese pressing of this 1982 album housed in a miniature LP sleeve featuring one bonus track. Virgin. 2006.
Personnel: Michael Schenker (guitar), Graham Bonnet (vocals), Chris Glen (bass), Ted McKenna (drums).
Additional personnel: Tommy Eyre (keyboards).
| | McAuley-Schenker Group Built To Destroy CD (1983) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve
Van Halen music CDs
$37.55 BUILT TO DESTROY, 1983's nine-track explosion from The Michael Schenker Group, is powered by the hard-rocking tracks "Rock My Nights Away" and "Dogs of War."
Built to Destroy was not much different than MSG's previous effort, Assault Attack, except that Gary Barden replaced Graham Bonnet on lead vocals. Michael Schenker's steady musicianship usually lifted his sometimes mediocre solo efforts into at least the listenable range. But other than "Rock My Nights Away" and the instrumental "Nemo," most of the songs on this album sound like standard '80s fare: upbeat, keyboard-laced pop-metal songs with inspirationally banal lyrics that would fit nicely on a movie soundtrack. The U.K. version on BGO Records and the U.S. one on Chrysalis are supposed to have alternate mixes, but the difference is imperceptible. The easier to find American release has a shuffled song order and "Rock Will Never Die" instead of the power ballad "Walk the Stage." Built to Destroy, while average, was still much better than UFO albums from the same period, proving that Schenker was really the guiding force behind his former band. Nonetheless, this release is for fans of the genre or Schenker completists only. ~ Brian Downing

| | Flamin Groovies In Person CD (1997)
Van Halen music CDs
$13.35 The first 10 tracks on IN PERSON!!! were recorded for a live radio broadcast on WSAN, San Francisco, California, during the final week of shows at the Fillmore West in 1971.
Recorded live at the Fillmore West, San Francisco, California on June 30, 1971 and the Matrix, San Francisco, California in 1970. Includes liner notes by Miriam Linna.
In their native U.S., the Flamin' Groovies achieved cult status at best, but in England they would have been hailed as pub-rock pioneers. This 1971 live recording shows the band in all their gritty, garage-minted glory, covering the classics of blues ("I'm a Man"), R&B ("Walkin' the Dog"), and early rock & roll ("Sweet Little Rock 'n' Roller"), as well as delivering their own roots-rocking gems ("Teenage Head"). Recorded just before frontman Roy Loney departed, IN PERSON is a snapshot of the Groovies in their prime.
Flamin' Groovies: Tim Lynch (vocals, guitar); Roy Loney (vocals); Cyril Jordan, James Ferrell (guitar); George Alexander (bass); Danny Mihm (drums).
Personnel: Tim Lynch (vocals, guitar); Roy Loney (vocals); James Ferrell, Cyril Jordan (guitar); Danny Mihm (drums).
Liner Note Author: Miriam Linna.
Recording information: Fillmore West (??/??/1970-06/30/1971); Matrix (??/??/1970-06/30/1971).
| | Martin Carthy Shearwater CD (1972) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Expanded
Van Halen songs
$8.99 Martin Carthy cut this solo album in 1971, immediately after he exited Steeleye Span following two albums with them, Please to See the King and Ten Man Map. The material is very spare, featuring Carthy and his guitar alone (except on "Betsy Bell and Mary Gray," and where Steeleye Span alumnus Maddy Prior appears on vocals), or his voice alone, and his approach is very studied and deliberative here, as though reveling in the fact of singing and playing alone for the first time in several years. Some of the material is rather dark-hued in terms of story, most notably "The Banks of Green Willow" (a song best known in its classical adaptations by various composers), "Lord Randall," and "He Called for a Candle," and "Famous Flower of Serving Men," all very grim stories -- even "Outlandish Knight," in which the would-be female victim of the title character turns the tables, is pretty dark. Only "John Blunt" features any pronounced humor, and it might normally be hard to recommend a record like this as a potential first choice, except that "Famous Flower" is a high point of Carthy's career, one of the most powerful performances he's ever given on record; "Lord Randall" might be the best version ever recorded of that song; and Carthy's voice is astonishingly powerful, flexible, and rich-hued throughout. The lack of accompaniment is scarcely to be noticed on "Handsome Polly-O," in which Carthy's a cappella vocal seems to have undertones of its own accompaniment (one can almost hear the resonances of pipes and a fiddle). Surprisingly, his guitar is very restrained here, placed somewhat further down in the mix than is usual on his albums. Overall, the album is a good companion to the decidedly more upbeat Crown of Horn, recorded soon after. ~ Bruce Eder
Personnel: Martin Carthy (vocals, guitar); Maddy Prior (vocals).
| | Agression Locals Only CD (2006)
Van Halen album
$12.39 One of the key skatepunk bands of the early Oxnard scene, Agression deserved the buzz their early singles and compilation appearances got. However, by the time of the 1987 show captured on the Locals Only reissue, the band's original energy had long since dissipated, and the results are fairly painful. In between singer Mark Hickey's meandering stage raps, the band bash through a bunch of songs both old and new, with their original hardcore blur slowed down into a much more generic, metal-tinged sound that hasn't aged well. Agression standards like the sneering title track, "Dear John Letter" and "Slammin' at the Club" aren't quite perfunctory, but it's clear that the band's heart isn't really in this performance. Originally released under the title Agression 87, first as a cassette-only title and later as a mid-'90s CD, this edition is expanded by several other live tracks that simply make the album longer, not better. ~ Stewart Mason
Personnel: Mark Hickey (vocals); Henry Knowles (guitar); Mark Aber, John D Mitchell (drums).
Recording information: Fenders Hall, Long Beach, CA; KCPR, Santa Barbara, CA; Underground Railroad, Morgantown, WV.
