| | Kathleen Carnali Dangerous Prayer CD Kathleen Carnali Discography of CDs
Christian kids who want big, noisy, hook-laden guitar rock that their parents would be hard-pressed to object to (sample song titles: "Highest Praise," "Rejoice," "I'm Just Gonna Praise") have a very good friend in Kathleen Carnali, a raven-haired singer/songwriter with a face like Catherine Zeta-Jones', teeth like Marie Osmond's, and what sounds like an army of Gibson Les Pauls jacked through ten tons of Marshall stacks and backed up by a Howitzer barrage of drummers. The choruses are fist-pumpingly anthemic and melodically easy to follow, and if they're sometimes a little bit puzzling ("I pray you don't long to be/More popular than Christ"), most of the time they're bombastically humble ("Bring me to my end/So I'm desperate for you," she shouts on the aptly named title track) and exuberantly abject in ways that will be comfortably familiar to fans of this type of thing. None of this is a criticism -- Christian rock is no more formulaic than any other identifiable rock genre, and is frequently less so -- but it does mean that Carnali's market is unapologetically narrow. Those who fit into it will find plenty to enjoy on this album. ~ Rick Anderson
Personnel: Kathleen Carnali (piano, background vocals); Mike Payne (guitar); Rebecca Loomis (violin); Tony Lucido (bass guitar); Ben Phillips (drums).

Dangerous Prayer album
$9.58 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," and a version of "Daydream Believer" that is easily the slowest on record. Boyle sings beautifully throughout, delivering more of the same of what she did in her moment in the sun on television. Those won over by Boyle, either her voice or story, will surely be satisfied.
There's no question that Susan Boyle's story is inspiring, but the same adjective can't quite apply to her debut, I Dreamed a Dream. This is almost a willful antonym of "inspiring" -- it is not stirring, rousing, or stimulating, it is sleepy, reserved, and placid, but is that a surprise? Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's ...

Dangerous Prayer CD music
$15.64 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining

| | Lorrie Morgan Moment In Time CD (2009)
Dangerous Prayer songs
$10.89 Lorrie Morgan is no stranger to the limelight, demonstrating incredible talent as a vocalist -- she began her singing career in her teens at the Grand Ole Opry, was a session vocalist for years, and finally emerged as an artist and star in her own right. Since 1989 she's scored three number one singles, charted with 25 more, and has recorded nine studio albums, the latest being A MOMENT IN TIME, a 2009 gem of an album recorded for the Country Crossing imprint. There are literally dozens of records that have been recorded in the 21st century where artists cover classic country songs. Lorrie Morgan's take on the same thing is worth seeking out because it leaves the others in the dust. For starters, these 14 songs were cut in two absolutely live-to-tape studio sessions. There are no overdubs of any kind and all the participants, from the band to the vocal chorus to the string section, were in the room, recording from the floor simultaneously -- in other words, strictly old school. You hear Morgan's voice exactly as she performed these tunes without punchouts and splices in the final mix. Just as importantly, she chose (mostly) material that wasn't necessarily obvious. She cut songs such as "Are You Lonesome Tonight" by Lou Handman, and "After the Fire Is Gone" as a stellar duet with Tracy Lawrence. ...
