Personnel: Yael Naïm (vocals, guitars, keyboards); David Donatien (keyboards, drums, percussion, programming). On her remarkably assured self-titled Atlantic debut, French-Israeli vocalist Yael Naim joins the ranks of inventive-yet-accessible performers such as Fiona Apple, Feist, and Keren Ann, offering up an album that's eclectic but never overreaching. Selected for a prominent Apple laptop ad, the buoyant piano-led single "New Soul" is the record's high point, and showcases Naim's warm, inviting voice. Other standout tracks include "Toxic," which recasts the Britney Spears hit as a strange lullaby, and the folk-tinged "Yashanti," one of a handful of songs sung in Hebrew or French. While many people will seek out YAEL NAIM for "New Soul," they'll find that whole album is worthy of adoration and acclaim.Rolling Stone (p.65) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A]rty folk pop: acoustic guitars, parlor-room piano, school-band brass....All in all, pleasant stuff..." Yael Naim Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Everyone loves this CD! Yael Naim's fresh, sweet voice and catchy melodies simply captured us - me and my friends. Yes, the CD is trilingual (English, French, and Hebrew), but even my friends who speak English only love many or all of the tracks. I love all but two tracks. New star, Yael Naim Yael Naim is a promising new artist, but I enjoy only 2 of the selections. Most of the ablum is bi-lingual and I am not. The score is pleasant, but I cannot connect with most of the lyrics. Submitted by cdague52 (Norton, MA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 3 found this helpful.

| | Monk's Music Trio Think Of One CD (2004)
Yael Naim
$16.19 "Think Of One" "Monk's Music Trio" "Think Of One", the second cd by the "Monk's Music Trio"--the follow up to the group's critically acclaimed debut disc "Harmony Of Odd Numbers"--continues the band's sonic exploration of the music of Thelonious Monk, reaffirmining the pianist's place as one of America's greatest composers. The San Francisco based trio, comprised of drummer/leader Chuck Bernstein, pianist/musical director Si Perkoff, and recent edition bassist Sam Bevan, presents thirteen new interpretations of Monk compostiions, ranging from his best known songs to some of the most obscure. The readings of these uniquely swinging classics by the "Monk's Music Trio" are simultaneously fresh and faithful; avant garde and traditional; modern and timeless. The opening "San Francisco Holiday" (subtitled "Worry Later") pays homage to both Monk and the city that is Bernstein's birthplace and the band's home. First recorded at the Black Hawk in 1960, the staccato, note-filled melody is one of Monk's busier lines and Perkoff attacks it with suitable verve without losing sight of the composer's laid back concept of tempo. Bevan lays down a sure-footed walking bass line and contributes a solid solo. Bernstein provides Monkish flavor with his oblique drum accents and a melodic notion of rhythm in both his accompaniment and four bar exchanges with Perkoff. "Coming On The Hudson" is one of Monk's lesser-known pieces, initially performed by his quartet with Johnny Griffin at the Five Spot in 1958. Since then it has been reprised by Griffin and Sonny Fortune and has also been favored by Steve Lacy and Roswell Rudd, two of the composer's more adventurous devotees. Perkoff's performance here demonstrates Monk's strong influence on his tonality and two-handed technique (which is utilized to great affect in call and response passages), but also reveals great individualism in his improvising. Bevan has another fine feature and Bernstein again interpolates five bar drum exchanges with Perkoff into a spirited arrangement that sustains the piece's unique rhythmic ...
| | James Blackshaw Sunshine CD (2008) Digipak
Yael Naim
$11.25 Personnel: James Blackshaw (guitar, 6-string guitar, 12-string guitar, sarod, harmonium, organ, bells). Recording information: No Recording Studio (02/16/2005). What at first announces itself as an homage to the Takoma school of 12-string acoustics quickly reveals its true identity as master musical thesis in mood manipulation and the adaptive possibilities of a singular instrument. SUNSHRINE isn't an album or a single, really. Marketable compartmentalizing defeats the purpose of its 26-minute-plus title track (the only other song being the sublime three-minute come-down of "Skylark Herald's Dawn"), which ripples with wordless, flawless fluidity through unending permutations on blues guitar, as translated through majestic excursions into classical beauty. It is a half hour on which one hopes the sun indeed never sets. James Blackshaw's Sunshrine was originally issued in 2005 by the Digitalis Industries label in an edition of 1,000 CDs. A year later, Bo'Weavil re-released it on vinyl as half of a double album that also included his first recording, Celeste. That pressing was limited to 525 copies and sold out quickly. Blackshaw was garnering a small but very dedicated following to be sure. His earlier recordings had been reviewed in The Wire and in Signal to Noise, and were circulated by word of mouth and on dubbed CD-Rs for two years. Blackshaw was introduced to American shores via the Cloud of Unknowing album in 2007, thanks to the great ears over at New York's Tompkins Square imprint. The label has undertaken a great labor of love in providing the American releases of Blackshaw's back catalog: this is the third and final entry in that series on CD. Sunshrine is the shortest of Blackshaw's early recordings. It is comprised of two tracks; the title piece at 26 and a half minutes and "Skylark Herald's Dawn," a beautiful little sketch that lasts just a bit over three minutes. Call it a mini-album, a long EP, whatever; the title track is perhaps the single most stunning piece of music Blackshaw released up to Cloud of Unknowing (yes, 2006's O True Believers album on Important notwithstanding). Blackshaw plays both six- and 12-string guitars on "Sunshrine," and an Indian sarod, harmonium, organ, bells, and bowed cymbals as well. The track is pristinely recorded and is developed, as his previous works had been, by ...
