When it comes to the European jazz fusion scene, electric guitarist Terje Rypdal was in on the ground floor during the late 1960s, playing with George Russell and fellow ECM Records star-to-be Jan Garbarek. Recorded live, LIFE IN LEIPZIG finds Rypdal engaging in duo dialogues with acoustic pianist Ketil Bjornstad. It's a fascinating contrast of styles, Bjornstad's stately, crystalline Bill Evans-ish piano chords and Rypdal's lean, slow-burning, slightly distorted sustained tones intertwining. If Jimi Hendrix had lived, he might've gone on to make music like this. LIFE IN LEIPZIG is an album to get lost in.
Ketil Bjornstad: Ketil Bjornstad; Terje Rypdal.
Personnel: Ketil Bjornstad (piano); Terje Rypdal (guitar, electric guitar).JazzTimes (p.88) - "Their styles are diametrically opposed -- Bjornstad the classical musician, Rypdal the rocker -- but their chemistry has stood the test of time." Life In Leipzig music CDs
$15.35 Anja Lechner's classically oriented European-styled cello and the bandoneon of Argentinean Dino Saluzzi seems a perfect match on paper for this program of musical remembrances and romantic interludes. But they go beyond what might be expected of a typical ECM chamber-type duet, delving deep into emotional territory that very few attempt or are capable of extracting. These selections composed by Saluzzi have a purely organic feel, a spiritual center, and a range of heartfelt expressions sure to touch and move the most cynical or lovestruck ...

| | Keith Jarrett Setting Standards: New York Sessions CDs (2007) Box Set; Special Edition
Life In Leipzig album
$28.69 Whether that song is the opening moment of Standards, Vol. 1, "Meaning of the Blues," or its hinge piece, "It Never Entered My Mind," or the latter two selections on Standards, Vol. 2, "If I Should Lose You" and "I Fall in Love Too Easily," the effect is the same: these three men can swing as hard as anybody, but they also investigate harmonically, rhythmically, and intuitively the far more subtle aspects these tunes offer as possibilities. Check the intros to both discs for more proof. Another compelling argument is that, given when these recordings were made, when jazz had entered its most ...

Life In Leipzig music CDs
$21.45 The roots rock orbit is how this CD collection revolves and there are some really solid tracks included. Others settle to the level of effective bar band music, which seems to be a watering hole for most of this type of material in one way or another. Arlington, VA's Karl Straub is present not only on a solo track but as leader of the Graverobbers, lending a nice vocal touch as well as some well-defined string bending. That is far from the end of his appearances on the disc, as he also shows up in the membership of some of the other featured bands, and authors several of the other songs. These contributions and the presence of several other musicians in different roles on the record help lend a sense of continuity to the proceedings, no small feat when it comes to a compilation. "My Sally" brings in the bluegrass pros including Mike Auldridge on dobro and Jim Gaudreau on mandolin. This is followed by a fine cover choice, none other than a Delmore Brothers tune, "Field Hand Man," which no doubt inspired the name of the band that recorded it, the Field Hands. Electric guitarist Bill Kirchen, slide guitarist Jeff Lang, and singers Maura Kennedy and Lisa Moscatiello are among the many talented performers featured. The Tom Clifford cover of an Evan Johns song is a nice touch. Everybody involved seems to join in for the finale. ~ Eugene Chadbourne
Named one of the top ten CD's of 2001 by the Wall Street Journal (12/28/2001)"RELEASED IN 2001, BUILT TO LASTA nifty collection of country-flavored songs by musicians from Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C., most of whom must've loved the same people who appealed to Dave Alvin, Gram Parsons, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss and kd lang, among others. Each of the disc's 18 songs crackle with the kind of organic purity that's missing from the high-gloss world of pop. The players in bands like the Fieldhands, Last Train Home, Jumpin' Jupiter, Starling, and Auldridge & Gaudreau deserve a big, big audience and a spot on the "Grand Ole Opry." Description of The Tracks:1) Last Train Home - Been Awhile This is inspired alt-country reminiscent ...

Life In Leipzig music CDs
$13.15 For the fourth edition of Five Play (not counting the recording they did backing vocalist Maria Anadon,) drummer and founder Sherrie Maricle has assembled yet another quintet from the players in her Diva Big Band. Bassist Noriko Ueda and pianist Tomoko Ohno are the holdovers and do not miss a beat. Janelle Reichman is a very young tenor saxophonist and clarinetist from Michigan who takes over for Anat Cohen. Jami Dauber from Chicago is now the full-time trumpeter -- she played on half of the previous CD, Five Play... Plus. Their repertoire concentrates on standards, a Toshiko Akiyoshi original, and two pop songs taken to swing proportions. What these women bring to the table is a finely tuned sense of democracy, style, purpose, and full intent to swing. Their equality and balance is in evidence right off the bat on an easily swung Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers like version of the Hal David-Burt Bacharach written title track. Still in that vein but using a ...

$9.59 "Normal" is a seven track EP that's easy to consume for the 20 or so minute overall length of three and change intervals that come away like curvy bends obscured by brush and dark paths.
