| | Singer Unhistories Vinyl LP Record Singer Discography of CDs
Unhistories is the type of album that's easier to appreciate than to actually enjoy -- it's easy to admire Singer's ability to deconstruct rock music to a pulp, with atonal shards, off-time pentatonic scales, and disjointed clashing strums. Barely holding everything together is a winding falsetto harmony line veering in and out of the dissonance. There's a certain charm to loose music, as when the bass player locks in on a guitar part and the drummer is doing his own thing, fluttering off time, while the other guitarist noodles away in a completely different world. Because the members of the band have proven track records in their endeavors, prior fans will probably defend the merit of this record faithfully. Call it no wave, call it freak funk, call it avant-garde brilliance; people who respect bands merely for their artistic sensibilities and originality will find a lot to like in Singer. ~ Jason Lymangrover
It's always exciting when a new band tries to reinvent rock's wheel, but it isn't always pleasant. Unhistories is the type of album that's more of an appreciation than an actual enjoyment. It's easy to admire Singer's ability to deconstruct rock music to a pulp, but with no hooks, no conventional structure, and just a bleak meandering trudge left over, there's not much left to enjoy. The album plods along unwillingly, like one big bleary disjointed song hanging in the same key with atonal shards, off-time pentatonic scales, and disjointed clashing strums. Barely holding the mishmash together is a winding falsetto harmony line veering in and out of the dissonance. There's a certain charm to loose music and spiraling monotony, but Singer have no semblance of chemistry: when the bass player locks in on a guitar part, the drummer is doing his own thing, fluttering off time, and the other guitarist is noodling away in a completely different world. Because the members of the band have proven track records in their endeavors, prior fans will probably defend the merit of the record faithfully -- without truly "getting it" -- but it feels more like a hoax or a whim than a well-thought vision, and one with no real payoff. Call it no wave, call it freak funk, call it avant-garde brilliance, but in actuality it just sounds like Prince on really, really bad acid. People who respect bands merely for their artistic sensibilities and originality will find a lot to like in Singer, but those who demand more probably won't understand. ~ Jason LymangroverSpin (p.104) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Clean guitars stab and moan, while drums skate around the rhythm....All four dudes harmonize like drunken karaoke addicts." Uncut (p.103) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'[T]he soft, slow and steady 'Divining' is the first sign there's something good going on here, a mod enhanced by the scarily hypnotic 'Oh Dusty'..." The Wire (p.59) - "It's a great sounding record, sprawling and episodic but absolutely in keeping with its own unique aesthetic." Singer Unhistories Songs | 1. | Slow Ghosts |

$8.15 Pricipally recorded live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California from December 10-12, 1973; the Auditorium Theater, Chicago, Illinois in 1974; Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1974.
It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, working with Ruth Underwood, Don Preston, George Duke, etc. While all the tunes are technically impeccable (often featuring trademark feats of counter-intuitive derring-do), it's Zappa's humorous interaction with the band and the audience that puts the real spark into this recording.
Delivering lengthy monologues both inbetween and during the songs, Zappa provides light-hearted ...
| | Real Kids Vinyl LP (1977)
Unhistories
$14.89 One of the classic overlooked albums of '70s punk, the self-titled 1977 debut by Boston's Real Kids is a punchy, poppy garage-rock blast that not only stands up to the best New york and London had to offer that year, it positively shreds later Boston garage-rockers like DMZ and the Lyres. Led by singer/songwriter John Felice, the Real ...
| | Lullabye Arkestra Ampgrave Vinyl LP (2006)
Unhistories
$13.89 Lullabye Arkestra are a bass-and-drum vocal duo that is, in practicality, anything but. Drummer Justin Small (from Do Make Say Think), and bassist Katia Taylor are Canadian soulsters who understand what deep distortion-drenched soul music is all about. This is deep white Canadian soul that packs a wallop -- especially when considered in light of the pair adding a three-piece horn section, a Hammond B-3, and a violin that is sometimes overdubbed to sound like a string section. Taylor can sing like a midnight gutter canary who has heard the intensities of both Carla Thomas and Otis Redding, but doesn't have the vocal chops necessary to pull ...

Japanese version with bonus track "Generous Palmstroke," which is also the B-side to the U.K. single "Hidden Place."
Bjork's first non-soundtrack album since HOMOGENIC is positively pastoral compared with that release's experimental electronic textures. Swathed in strings and laced with beautiful choral arrangements, VESPERTINE has more in common with SELMASONGS, echoing that DANCER IN THE DARK soundtrack album's meandering melody lines, while smoothing out and adding ...
