Dwelling beyond the virtuoso bombast of prog rock true believers Dream Theater, flying past the mystical hallucinations of BOC, and sailing over the pomposity (and vocal styling) of Styx comes the Sign, a super non-group consisting of members of Zebra, Kansas, and the Touch. This bizarre quintet is not so much out of date, but stranded outside of time. The Sign blows its collective wad right out of the gate, with everyone working overtime on "I'm Alive," brandishing Dennis DeYoung-ish overlapping vocals and wailing keys. "Cross the Line" lacks the presence of pomp-hero Randy Jackson, but keeps the energy level high. Whenever the randy Jackson makes the scene, things pick up via his penetrating vocals (he holds back most of his extended sonic screeching for Zebra, however) and acute guitar. But something very bad and very pompous happens to Jackson's simple "Black Bird" rewrite, "All Your Life." As Signs of Life wears on, Jackson concedes to the background, as main-man Mark Mangold wins out too often with his throaty bombast and schmaltzy soliloquies (he worked with Michael Bolton, natch). Treacly ballads sink this ship, aching, wretched confessionals dragging on five minutes too long. Nice bits like Jackson's axe solos, the instrumental work in "Nothing but a Heartache" (as good as the title, whatever that means), and the coda of "I Will Be There for You" are almost worth the work of powering through the surrounding songs. The enclosed cryptic lyrics may turn on fanboys willing to buckle down and study the booklet, but some might not be up for the job. The best topics flit between Christianity and Eastern mythology. The Sign's trying to say something, but talks too much. An impartial producer is needed to corral these layered meanderings, as Signs of Life is exhausting. The songs need individual overhauls and tune ups; Mangold swerves out of control before the first chorus and never gets back on the road. Ironically, Aryon brings to mind Ayreon, who delivered one of the best progressive pieces of all time this same year. "Desperate Heart" almost works in spite of itself, but Signs of Life is a mixed bag with too many too-long duffers to recommend. ~ Doug Stone

“MUSHROOM PALACE” By Ferguson-Hulitt Mushroom Palace is Dreu Ferguson Sr. and Brian Hulitt’s collaboration into the psychedelic folk blues dimension. Hulitt’s words and Ferguson’s guitar establish the album from the beginning with title cut “Mushroom Palace”, a drug lyric upbeat folkrocker, followed by the 60's sound of “The Essence” which is a psychedelic chant put to music complete with whispers, druggy references, 60's guitar etc.then comes the killer electric guitar cut “Maelstrom” with great lyric and guitar playing. As the album evolves into more of a folk blues direction, great cuts “Without a Face” and “History Following Me” stand out. The humorous rocker “Bad Weather Mama” is also a fun spot. There is a Dylan esque cut “If I Disappeared Today” and spoken word cut “Words of Whispers” complete with a tape loop and backwards guitar!
