Soundtrack English; English Subtitles After six months of drug rehab, Frankie Machine returns to the seedy Chicago joints where he began and succumbs once more to the dark addictions of professional poker, and -- even more dangerously -- heroin. This powerful drama, which broached the subject of drug addiction in a stark and realistic manner, may be mild by today's standards, but was a groundbreaking and edgy film in its day. The legendary Frank Sinatra plays addict, Frankie Machine, with Eleanor Parker playing his disabled wife. Based on the novel by Nelson Algren. MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM received three Academy Award Nominations, including Best Actor for Frank Sinatra. Man With The Golden Arm Reviews: "...Still a riveting depiction of the lower depths, with Frank Sinatra giving a surprisingly sensitive and detailed performance..." -- Rating: A-
-- Tim Purtell, Entertainment Weekly "Preminger defied the contemporary trend toward location shooting by photographing almost all of GOLDEN ARM on a claustrophobic New York street set built on an RKO soundstage, a defiantly expressionistic approach that Preminger would return to and amplify with his brilliant PORGY AND BESS."-- Dave Kehr, New York Times 3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Its scenes of cold-turkey withdrawal solidified Frank Sinatra's rep as an actor and boosted the career of his raw young costar..."
-- Howard Karren, Premiere "[Preminger] makes it work, amping up the claustrophobic tension in beautifully choreographed long takes." -- Grade: B+

When trouble erupts, suddenly Sydney has to rescue his young friend, but a secret from his past threatens to destroy everything he has tried to build up.
Director Paul Thomas Anderson's highly acclaimed debut feature (based on the films of Jonathan Demme and John Cassavetes) is a tight, intricate film noir character study with a more disciplined plot than his later, more expansive films. The film also ...

$9.85 Blake Edwards's return to the male-in-meltdown territory he explored in 10 and THAT'S LIFE stars John Ritter as unemployed writer Zach, who is not only suffering from writer's block, but his drinking is out of control, as is his obsessive womanizing, and, not surprisingly, his wife wants to end their marriage. To add to his problems, his house has just burned down, and his agent is knocking at death's door. But since this is a Blake Edwards comedy, Zach has enough charm and relative affluence to continue his pursuits, which the director regards with a bemused deatchment. One of his girlfriends sets his piano on fire, and another gets him to wear a glow-in-the-dark condom, allowing him to engage in a condom duel with her jealous, similarly clad rock-star boyfriend. Eventually, Zach turns to fatherly bartender Barney (Vince Gardenia), who should have long ago cut off his bar tab, and psychiatrist Dr. Westford (choreographer Michael Kidd), and both tell ...

Man With The Golden Arm review
$9.69 Treading territory similar to JU-ON: THE GRUDGE (2003), RINGU (1998), and ONE MISSED CALL (2003), all Asian horror films remade for American audiences, SHUTTER is the first English-language film for director Masayuki Ochiai, whose career has been primarily within the horror genre. The result is another potent ghost story able to conjure up feelings of dread through a single longhaired, poker-faced female apparition.
Newlywed New Yorkers Ben (Joshua Jackson, THE SKULLS) and Jane Shaw (Rachael Taylor, TRANSFORMERS) have traveled to Tokyo, where photographer Ben is investigating a potentially lucrative job opportunity. While driving on a dark road at night, the couple runs over a mysterious woman who seems to appear out of nowhere and can't be found after the accident. Over the next few days, Jane goes sightseeing while Ben works, only to see strange apparitions that also appear on the photos she takes. After Ben's photos show the same ghostly forms, he confesses that he knows something about the woman they ran over, but it may be too late to stop her trail of terror. Another Hollywood remake of an Asian horror film, SHUTTER has a tricky lineage: the 2004 original was made in Thailand, while this version is U.S.-financed, but shot mostly in Japan. By setting the film in Japan, director Ochiai retains an element of exoticism for American audiences, which also allows Ben and Jane to be out of their element, à la DON'T LOOK NOW. As the menacing spirit, Megumi, Megumi Okina is adept at conjuring fear with a simple glare in a minimal ...
