Although he is best known for his bluesy soul-jazz outings, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine's first Blue Note session as a leader was a much more traditional bop affair, and the resulting album, Look Out!, featuring a rhythm section of Horace Parlan on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Al Harewood on drums, shows as much artful restraint as it does groove. Not that this is a bad thing, since it allows Turrentine's big, clear tone to shine through in all its muscular sweetness, giving Look Out! a wonderful and flowing coherence. Among the highlights here are the pretty ballad "Journey Into Melody" and the gently funky "Little Sheri." ~ Steve Leggett
Personnel: Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone); Horace Parlan (piano); George Tucker (bass instrument); Al Harewood (drums).

Look Out! album
$8.99 This is part of Blue Note's Collector's Choice series. These are limited-edition pressings of a few thousand copies.
This LP has material from 1961 that for no real reason went unreleased until 1985. One song, "Three Coins in a Fountain," is from the same session that resulted in tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley's famous Workout session with guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The other five numbers -- three obscure Mobley originals, plus "I Should Care" and "Hello Young Lovers" -- are from the previously unheard December 5, 1961 session with the same personnel except for Green. Hank Mobley was in a prime period around this time, and all of his Blue Note recordings are well worth picking up. ~ Scott Yanow
Reviewers called tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley underrated so many times that the word may as well have been his middle name, and when combined with the numerous financial, personal, and health issues that Mobley endured during his career, it all added up to a middle of the pack position in the jazz canon. He truly deserves a reevaluation. This delightfully warm set was cut on December 5, 1961 with Mobley on tenor sax, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums, ...
| | Johnny Griffin Congregation CD (1957) Bonus Tracks
Look Out! CD music
$8.09 This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series.
The Rudy Van Gelder-helmed reissue of 1957's THE CONGREGATION improves on what is already a classic Johnny Griffin date. Backed by Paul Chambers on bass, Kenny Dennis on drums, and Sonny Clark on piano, Griffin demonstrates his usual dazzling dexterity on the tenor sax. The mode is straightforward bop, with a balance of uptempo numbers and ballads, and plenty of stretching out all around. This set comes highly recommended--especially given the improved sound of the reissue--to fans of the style.
The great tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin is heard in top form on this near-classic quartet set. Assisted by pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Paul Chambers, ...
| | Donald Byrd Royal Flush: RVG Series CD (1961)
Look Out! music CDs
$9.39 In the early 1960s, long before he'd pursue a funkier, electric direction, Donald Byrd was one of the leading trumpeters on the American jazz scene. Recorded in autumn 1961, ROYAL FLUSH is hard-swinging (with the baritone sax of Pepper Adams, how could it not be?) and deep-grooving hard bop. It does, however, point to aspects of jazz's future--note the poignant "Requiem," contributed by a young Herbie Hancock (this session's pianist) and the inventive drumming of Billy Higgins.
In the early 1960s, long before he'd pursue a funkier, electric direction, Donald Byrd was one of the leading straight-ahead trumpeters on the American jazz scene. ROYAL FLUSH, recorded in autumn 1961, is bold, swinging (with the baritone sax of Pepper Adams, how could it not be?), and deep-grooving hard bop. Yet, it does at times point to aspects of jazz's future--note the poignant "Requiem," contributed by a young Herbie Hancock (this session's pianist) and the inventive drumming of Billy Higgins.
Donald Byrd was at his peak as a straight-ahead hard bop band leader in the early '60s, turning in a series of remarkably solid, enjoyable sessions for Blue Note. Royal Flush is no exception to the rule. Recorded in the fall of 1961, Royal Flush finds Byrd once again working with baritonist Pepper Adams, but adding bassist Butch Warren, drummer ...

| | Duke Jordan Flight To Jordan CD (1960) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Look Out! album
$9.19 Duke Jordan made his mark in jazz in the late 1940s as one of bebop innovator Charlie Parker's regular pianists, but he didn't blossom as a composer until the hard-bop era of the mid-'50s. FLIGHT TO JORDAN, his 1960 Blue Note debut, captures Jordan at a creative peak. The album features a slightly unusual ...
| | Lou Donaldson Here 'Tis CD (1961) Remastered
Look Out! CD music
$9.25 Here 'Tis is in the front rank of Lou Donaldson records, an exceptionally funky soul-jazz session that finds the saxophonist swinging harder than usual. As he moves from hard bop to soul-jazz, Donaldson reveals a bluesy streak to his playing while keeping the vigorous attack that defined his best bop. Donaldson's playing is among his finest in the soul-jazz vein, but what makes Here 'Tis such an enjoyable session is his interaction with his supporting trio ...
| | Bobby Curtola Hitchhiker & Other Hits CD (2004)
Look Out! music CDs
$14.69 American oldies' fans will be forgiven for being unfamiliar with Bobby Curtola since he charted only two singles in the U.S., neither of which cracked the Top 40. In his native Canada, however, it was a different story -- several of his singles went to number one, his albums were certified gold, and he was an entertainer of the first rank. Hitchhiker & Other Hits compiles 19 of Curtola's original hit recordings from 1961-1965, including his two U.S. hits: "Fortuneteller" and "Aladdin," both from 1962. "Hand in Hand With You," Curtola's first hit from 1960, appears here in a 1963 version that appeared as a B-side. Del-Fi Records released Curtola's records in America, and his sound bears an uncanny similarity to Del-Fi's Johnny Crawford. ...
