| | Paul McCartney Good Evening New York City CDs (2009) With DVD; Digipak
Rock Classics CD music
$15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining

| | John Fogerty Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition
Rock Classics CD music
$14.29 John Fogerty released his first solo CD, an album of covers on which he played all the instruments, under the name the "Blue Ridge Rangers," and he revives that concept on 2009's THE BLUE RIDGE RANGERS RIDES AGAIN. Where the first smacked of the righteous zeal of a young purist, RIDES AGAIN is a lot looser in its attack, which is reflected in the way it splits the difference between country and rockabilly classics and reflective numbers from '70s songwriters. These unexpected covers of John Prine, Delaney & Bonnie, and John Denver offer a peek at a sweeter, gentler Fogerty, a Fogerty who can also be heard on how he lays back instead of pushing ahead on Buck Owens' "I Don't Care (Just as Long as You Love Me)" and Ray Price's "I'll Be There," and even on his revamp of his own neglected swamp rocker "Change in the Weather." He can still raise an unholy ruckus however, wailing his way through Gene Simmons' rockabilly classic "Haunted House" and joyously duetting with Bruce Springsteen on the Everlys' "When Will I Be Loved." Still, RIDES AGAIN isn't a raucous rock & roll album; it's a relaxed good time, a little bit of cheerful nostalgia that's pretty charming.

| | Grapefruit Deep Water CD (1969) (Import) United Kingdom
Rock Classics songs
$20.59 Grapefruit's second and last album was a mighty sour disappointment after the tentative but rich promise of their debut. For whatever reason, their previous course -- as a lighter variation of the British pop-psych being done by the Beatles -- had been totally discarded. Out the window too went the multi-textured harmonies and orchestral arrangements responsible for so much of whatever charm the group could muster. In their place was a very routine band, playing very average harder rocking material mixing soul, pop, blues, and country. On "Can't Find Me," for instance, they seem to be trying to be a pop-slanted version of the Band (not a strategy bound to succeed in the hands of anyone), while "The Right Direction" is rustic country-rock with banjo. "Thunder and Lightning," "Come Down to the Station," and "A Dizzy Day" are all so-so boogie-rock numbers. Only on "Time to Leave" (which sounds just a bit like Badfinger) and "Blues in Your Head" do even traces of their early harmony pop arise, and even so they aren't very good ones. Not recommended, even if you enjoy the first Grapefruit album and are convinced that the follow-up might have at least something to offer. The CD reissue on Repertoire adds both sides of their 1971 single "Sha--Sha"/"Universal Party," which George Alexander recorded with help from George Young and Harry Vanda, and which unsurprisingly sounds similar to the Easybeats' final recordings ...

| | Aufgehoben Khora CD (2008)
Rock Classics CD music
$11.85 KHORA, the latest album from noise musicians Aufhehoben, challenges listeners with its very first track, "Ignorance Oblivion Contempt," a blistering meltdown of crackling, hissing discord. Elsewhere, the noise takes the form of clanking scrap steel and a menacing throb of industrial machinery on the 10-minute-plus "A Bastard Reasoning" as well as "Jederfürsich." Throughout, patterns and rhythms do emerge that tether the ...
