Even This
$8.49 Recorded between 1984 & 2003. Includes liner notes by Michael Sweet.
Throughout rock history, all great bands spawn quite a bit of similar-sounding offspring -- and the mighty Van Halen were no different. Throughout the '80s, a plethora of VH disciples appeared on the scene -- many of which happened to also hail from the same locale, Hollywood. Musically, Stryper were quite similar to the Van Halen boys, but vocally, singer Michael Sweet was more a kin to Styx's Dennis DeYoung. The pairing of both styles won Stryper a large following, and for a stretch of several years, scored several MTV hits, all of which are neatly compiled on 2003's 7: The Best of Stryper. While Stryper's lyrical message ...

| | Robert Payne Changes CD (2008)
Even This
$16.45 Robert Payne started out learning classical piano at the age of six and went to on win many awards during his school years. From an early age he wanted to make a career out of music, but societal and parental pressures steered him away from what was at the time considered to be a bad career choice (music) in favour of "respectability" (civil engineering). This resulted in him living a double life during his university years, getting out and playing in jazz clubs and at various dances and functions throughout the five years of day-time study. Then, soon after starting out as a trainee engineer, it all became too much, and so he turned away from the engineering profession, joining up with renowned guitarist Johnny Fourie's new band "Sound Department" featuring at The Branch Office in Johannesburg. For the next five years Robert was active in the jazz, session and live music scene in Johannesburg, whilst also teaching classical music at a local high school. This period made up for the "lost" academic years in that he got down to some dedicated wood-shedding, learning as much as he could about melody, harmony, composition, sound synthesis, and in particular, in developing his keyboard technique. He delved into George Russell's Lydian Chromatic Concept, and thereafter discovered the delights of various pentatonic scales derived from the two fundamental western diatonic scales (major and minor). It was during this time that his conceptual insights and composing abilities had their scope widened and their roots deepened.Robert traveled to London at the end of the seventies and set about pursuing his music dream - to play with the best. Through mingling with the working musicians in the pubs and wine bars he first met up with the local calypsonians and played high energy soca concerts with Trinidadian calypso kings Arrow, Explainer and Blue Boy in various London concert venues. Subsequently he worked with various South African musicians-in-exile including Hugh Masekela and Ernest Mothle, who introduced Robert to George Lee, a Ghanaian saxophone player with whom he started a long association, becoming a founding member of the band Anansi. This band played the jazz clubs and wine bars in the capitol and recorded an album in 1984 ...
| | Robert Allen Country Treasures CD (2008)
Even This
$11.39 Iâm Robert Allen. I sing, write music and play about a dozen different instruments â some better than others. It all started in New London, CT at age 7 singing âHappy Trails To Youâ in the school talent show.By the time I was 16 my best buddies and I had formed East Hampton, CTâs proverbial high school band. As âThe Specialsâ we played at all the local school dances and I even persuaded the movie theater owner to let us play between matinees on the weekend. That was definitely a first in our town! Then came the stint in the U.S. Navy and I formed âThe Signalmenâ. The shipâs captain liked the band so well he arranged for us to perform before officials and dignitaries in Italy, Subic Bay, Hong Kong, China, Spain, Africa and Hawaii. After the Navy I spent several years on Staten Island performing with âThe Country Echoesâ. Just before going on a live radio broadcast the DJ realized he had trouble pronouncing my name. He asked who my favorite guitar player was and I replied that it was Duane Eddy. He said, âGood. For today your name is Bob Dwayneâ. And it stuck! The call of Nashville came next. While there I formed and fronted âThe Bob Dwayne Showâ, âRed Hot Ricochet Bandâ and âConnectionâ. We played country, top 40, southern rock, oldies and threw in some blues. Between the last two bands, I spent about three years fronting for Grand Ole Opry artist Stonewall Jackson. I performed at all the major (and some not so major) clubs in and around Nashville and did demo work at four different well-known studios. And I was on the road a lot; all over the country. Then it was on to the Atlanta area where I re-claimed my real name. After performing with âClass Reunionâ for a while, I formed âRobert Allen & Co.â and began playing locally. Then I went on an extended USO tour entertaining in Turkey, Italy, Greece and Spain. After returning I assisted at a recording studio doing everything from administration to demos. I finally took the opportunity to stay put ...
