Featured Charles Hazelwood
Subject Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Ed Stoppard stars as Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in this compelling 2-part drama/documentary about the tragic life of his musical genius. Conductor Charles Hazelwood examines the anguished life and suspicious death of Tchaikovsky in this fascinating series based on the composer's letters and diaries. Shot on location in St. Petersburg, Russia, this film includes performances of some of Tchaikovsky's best known works.

Mysterious, troubled, and brilliant--Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky created an emotional array of compositions that captured both his inner demons as well as the time period he lived through. While facts about his life, and particularly his homosexual affairs, are difficult to come by, this dramatic interpretation is blended with a documentary approach led by acclaimed composer Charles Hazlewood. It's both a creative imagining of what Tchaikovsky's turmoil might have been like as well as a detailed analysis of what made his music so special.

Despite his weak eyesight, Rudyard Kipling's son Jack was determined to serve in the military during World War I. Unlike many parents, Kipling was adamant that his son have the opportunity to see action and uphold the values that were a constant motif in his writing. By way of influence Jack finally made it to the front, never to return, and Kipling would spend years of his life trying to uncover his son's fate. This Masterpiece Theatre production is the story of one aspect of the writer's life that was more tragic than anything depicted in his adventure stories. Daniel Radcliffe takes off Harry Potter's robes to star in this serious drama. Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles; Amaray Case

It's an emotionally charged depiction of life with all the ups and downs that make the human experience so painful yet worthwhile. Based on the bestseller from renowned author Rosamunde Pilcher, The Shell Seekers finally comes to the screen in an epic as grand as the novel that inspired it. Though director Julian Jarrold's adaptation of the Evelyn Waugh novel BRIDESHEAD REVISITED spans decades and continents, it's a taut film that never drags and can excite contemporary audiences. Matthew Goode (MATCH POINT) stars as lower-class Londoner Charles Ryder, an aspiring artist who is beginning his studies in history at Oxford in the 1920s. A chance encounter with dandyish aristocrat Sebastian Flyte (Ben Whishaw, PERFUME) changes the course of his life. The two embark on a close, intense friendship that is further complicated by the introduction of Sebastian's beautiful sister Julia (Hayley Atwell, CASSANDRA'S DREAM) and his overbearing, extremely religious mother, Lady Marchmain (Emma Thompson). BRIDESHEAD REVISITED follows Charles from the carefree '20s through the beginning of World War II, focusing on his complicated relationship with the upper-class family and their estate, Brideshead. Along with ATONEMENT's Joe Wright, Jarrold (BECOMING JANE) represents a new era of British period filmmaking. Both men bring a modern sensibility to their work that makes their films feel fresh and sexy, though they never lose authenticity. Jarrold employs some handheld camera work and quick-cut editing in BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, two techniques that separate his film from others in the genre. Fans of the book--and the 11-hour 1981 miniseries--may bristle at the film's relatively brief running time, but screenwriters Andrew Davies (the BBC classic PRIDE AND PREJUDICE) and Jeremy Brock (THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND) have distilled the story into the essentials. BRIDESHEAD REVISITED deftly works with the conflicts of ...

Spy Who Came In From The Cold
Spy Who Came In From The Cold DVDs  (1965)

Tchaikovsky film
DVD $31.15
Martin Ritt's adaptation of the John Le Carre bestseller THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD stars Richard Burton as Alec Leamas, a burnt-out spy soon to retire from British Intelligence. For his final assignment, Alec must pose as a drunk who wants to defect to East Germany, where the chief of operations for the Communists, Hans-Dieter Mundt (Peter van Eyck), has captured several British spies. His acting works: Communists throw Alec into jail for public drunkenness and for having an affair with a young member of the local Communist party, Nan (Claire Bloom). In jail, he is approached by Mundt's agents and asked to defect. They take Alec to East Berlin where he is grilled by Mundt's top man, Fiedler (Oskar Werner), who believes that Mundt is actually a double agent. Shot in stark black and white in documentary style, Ritt's film is a realistic portrait of the grim life of a spy, revealing all of the profession's complexities in a style that is equally as thrilling as an elaborate action scene in a James Bond movie. At the heart of the film is Burton's bitter and world-weary Alec, and his performance here ranks among the best of his career. Black & White; Soundtrack English.
