Ric Ocasek's songs were influenced by the Velvet Underground and the punk rock movement, but had a slick pop/rock sheen which proved very successful. After a demo version of "Just What I Needed" became a listener favorite on WBCN in Boston (the bands' homebase), they were pursued by record companies. THE CARS was recorded in 2 weeks in London, England.
This ranks as one of the best debut albums from a rock band. The Cars are filed under rock, but they are closer to power pop than any other genre. Ric Ocasek sounded like a cross between the Raspberries and Television, punk sound with a pop attitude. The giveaway was the irresistible harmony-ridden hooks in just about every one of his songs. Listen again to "You're All I've Got Tonight," "Just What I Needed" or "My Best Friend's Girl" and be thrilled. Lots of chunka chunka guitar and Mamas And Papas harmonies, and rarely a dull moment. They managed only six albums in 20 years, but they never bettered this.

| | Disillusion Back To Times Of Splendor CD (2004)
No Surrender EP
$9.69 A lot of metal fans were left wondering where the hell Disillusion came from upon the release of Back to Times of Splendor. The album, the Germans' first for Metal Blade after an independent debut, blasts off with the eight-and-a-half-minute "And the Mirror Cracked," a busy Dark Tranquillity-style burst of energy that slows down for some power metal (holding the cheese à la Nevermore) and proggy piano before reprising the power chords and dual-melody guitar leads enhanced with keyboards, growls, and clean singing. But what's a mushy mishmash of disparate genre-bending in less capable hands is an inspired turn for Disillusion, which plays to the strengths of the song while showing off impressively technical instrumental capabilities and clever twists and turns -- and, most importantly, sounding natural and unforced in the process. The title track and "The Sleep of Restless ...

No Surrender EP
$20.95 A relative newcomer to the world music market (due to decades under Soviet restrictions), Azerbaijani music holds a lot of parallels with its nearby style of Persian classical. Where Persian music has its maqams, Azerbaijani music has mughams. The names change, but the basics are the same. However, where Persian classical music continually attempts to evoke the qualities of the human voice, Azerbaijani music largely circumvents the problem and focuses on the voice itself, relying heavily on the ghazal format so popular throughout the region. In this album, a very nice overview of the forms, ...
