From a technician's standpoint, DRIFT is among Flotsam & Jetsam's finest work, bridging the gap between progressive rock and backstreet thrash. Flotsam & Jetsam has always been a band that defies trends. DRIFT is more visceral than Queensr˙che, more clear-cut than Dream Theater, and fiercer than Fates Warning. Where CUATRO, the band's previous effort, seemed primarily single-driven, DRIFT is album-oriented metal. The band's craft is so sharp and so refined that even the cover of Black Sabbath's "Fairies Wear Boots" sounds like an original Flotsam & Jetsam track.
Flotsam & Jetsam are beginning to sound a little tired on Drift, their fifth album. Nearly a decade after their debut, the band still sounds tight and their musical skills are quite impressive. Nevertheless, there is a distinct lack of new ideas. That in itself wouldn't be so bad but they haven't fashioned strong songs out of their trademark formula, which makes Drift interesting only to the band's most dedicated fans. [The CD was also released with bonus tracks.] ~ David Jehnzen
For every band there comes a moment of truth in their career, a moment where the surrounding circumstances can put the further existence of the band into question. For Flotsam and Jetsam, the thrash metal five piece from Phoenix, Arizona, that moment came around the release of their fifth album, 'Drift'. Between 1992 and 1995 the group went trough some tough experiences, which were sometimes referred to by the band as 'D-hell'. Bassist Jason Ward (who joined Flotsam and Jetsam in 1990) explains: 'We've had success but we've also had to deal with death, divorce, deceit, people playing with your emotions, difficult business decisions, bad timing, yet this band will not die.' The last statement, encouragingly positive, was definitely proven by the release of 'Drift' - a unique album by one of the most influential thrash metal groups ever to walk the face of the earth. Flotsam and Jetsam were originally formed in 1982, at that time using the name Dredlox, which was soon cha

Drift album
$7.59 Though they had recently lost lyricist and principal songwriter Jason Newsted to Metallica, Arizona thrashers Flotsam & Jetsam neatly avoided the sophomore slump with 1988's No Place for Disgrace. The album basically repeats the formula of their debut but benefits from a cleaner yet still-in-your face ...
| | Jon Oliva Tage Mahal CD (2005)
Drift CD music
$15.55 Tage Mahal is the first album from Jon Oliva's Pain -- just one of the numerous side projects helmed by the American metal legend outside the scope of his primary vehicle Savatage. But unlike his work with, say, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, there are really no radical differences between Savatage and the dramatic piano-led heavy metal of Pain -- only a slightly darker, more gothic tone, perhaps. In fact, one almost gets the feeling that Tage Mahal could very well have been a Savatage release if the members of that band didn't live so far apart from each other, while the crack heavy metal studio unit enlisted to perform on Pain (and also responsible for vocalist Zachary Stevens' Circle II Circle project) happened to reside in Oliva's hometown. Not that it really matters, since Oliva is talented and prolific enough as a writer to use his patented, Savatage-tested hard rock and metal as a launching pad for such standout Pain offerings as "Nowhere to Run," "Father, Son, Holy Ghost," and the excellent "Walk Alone." Likewise, his clever and original lyrics can always be relied on to add greater dimension where generic metal bands would bore listeners to tears, ...
| | Flotsam & Jetsam Dreams Of Death CD (2005)
Drift music CDs
$13.15 If you want to determine whether someone is a serious metal connoisseur or has a more casual interest in metal, try running certain names by him/her. It isn't unusual for folks who are only casually interested in metal to have some Metallica, Slipknot, Judas Priest, or Korn in their CD collections -- those are huge, widely publicized bands -- but when a headbanger carries on enthusiastically about a cult band like Meliah Rage, Budgie, Grief, Hellhammer, or Saint Vitus, you know you're talking to someone who lives and breathes metal. Flotsam & Jetsam are another band that appeals to headbangers who dig much deeper than the basics; although never a major name, they have maintained a small cult following. Along the way, Flotsam & Jetsam have had numerous lineup changes -- and when you're that much of a revolving door, your work can be erratic. But in a sense, Flotsam & Jetsam are like Saturday Night Live -- even if they disappoint you today, you figure they'll bounce back creatively tomorrow. This 2005 release is their first album for Crash Music and their first since ...
| | Flotsam & Jetsam Cuatro CD (1992) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Drift songs
$15.39 Despite showing much promise early in their career, Arizona thrashers Flotsam & Jetsam were quickly crippled by a number of personnel shakeups and lack of record company support, and with the genre in swift decline in the early '90s the band had become just another thrash metal casualty treading creative water. Still, with songs like "The Message," "Secret Square," and "Cradle Me Now" replacing some of their "speed for speed's sake" mentality with actual hooks and novel guitar textures, their fourth effort, Cuatro, did show a small but noticeable improvement over the utterly unoriginal thrash recipe of its predecessor. Unfortunately, much of the remaining material finds the band either reverting to its bad habits ("Swatting at Flies") or embarking on failed experiments ("Forget About Heaven"), and the fact that Flotsam & Jetsam would rebound three years later with one of their best efforts in Drift was nothing short of amazing. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Most bands were satisfied with being popular in the ...
| | Flotsam & Jetsam When The Storm Comes Down CD (1990) (Import) Poland
Drift album
$15.39 Arguably the finest melodic thrash band to break out of Phoenix, Flotsam & Jetsam took a stylistic detour with 1990's WHEN THE STORM COMES DOWN. Replacing Jason Newsted (snatched up by Metallica), new bassist and lyricist Troy Gregory (Prong, Killing Joke) now took the songwriting helm, and the resulting STORM polarized much of Flotsam's hardcore fanbase. ...

Drift CD music
$11.39 CD comes with a deluxe 10 page color booklet including the complete lyrics. Charles Theodore is the son of French and American art historian gypsies. He spent his childhood traveling, wandering through old churches and looking at paintings. From Providence, to Santa Monica to Chicago to Boston, going to the local school in a tiny French town with more cows than people, to living in the carnival that is New York City, his bicoastal, trans-Atlantic upbringing has influenced his songwriting as much as his musical heroes have. Graduating from Harvard University, or playing for a year in the New York subways, his rich life experience, and a desire to dig down to the heart of the song is central to his work.PRE-RELEASE REVIEW OF A SUITCASE LIFE BY A.A.A.(A wr. for The Guardian, NY,NY)"Charles Zerner is a very well-rounded young man. Combining intimate folk rock ramblings, choruses that wouldn't sound out of place on Top 40 radio, Spanish inspired guitar fills and noticeably rhythmic bass and drum sections, his songwriting draws from a multitude of influences. Fortunately, this diversity sounds neither gimmicky nor gratuitously eclectic, and he succeeds in this ambitious endeavor because of his genuine, consistent honesty.Jetlagged longing, lost loves and moments of displaced loneliness are revisited track by track, memorable and every bit as fresh as they once must have felt. Still, Zerner never compromises his upfront ...
